The $2,000 Tariff Payout: Free Money from an Empty Wallet

Donald Trump’s new proposal to give every American $2,000 from “tariff revenue” sounds great on paper.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth 
The U.S. Government Doesn’t Have Tariff Revenue to give.
Last year, total tariff collections were around $80 billion.
That’s barely 1.5% of annual federal spending.
The federal deficit, meanwhile, was $1.7 trillion.
So we’re talking about using a rounding error in revenue to fund half a trillion dollars in new checks.
That’s not fiscal discipline.
 That’s political theatre.


Tariffs Don’t Create Free Money — They Raise everyday Costs of Living
Ultimately the people hurt worse by the tariffs aren't China or Mexico — it's you.

Importers pay the tariff first, raise prices to offset it, and consumers eat the cost through higher prices on everyday goods.

So when politicians say “we’ll use tariffs to fund checks,” what they’re really saying is:
“We’ll raise your cost of living first — then send you a check with your own money.”

The Macro Problem: Free Cash in a Debt Spiral
The U.S. already owes $35 trillion — and pays over $1 trillion a year in interest just to service that debt.
Sending another $2,000 per person — roughly $500 billion total — means one of two things:
 1) More debt, or
 2) More money printing.
Either way, it weakens the dollar and drives asset inflation.
Stocks, real estate, and commodities rise — benefiting the wealthy who hold them — while the cost of living rises for everyone else. 
At first, an artificial bump in the price of assets might seem like a good thing right? 
Not if you care about the long term value of the US Dollar.⬇️


The Deeper Risk: The Dollar’s Credibility
This comes at a time when gold is quietly reclaiming its role as the world’s reserve benchmark.
Foreign Central Banks now hold more gold than they do treasuries... for the first time since 1996.
Central banks are buying record levels of gold.
Nations are settling trade outside the dollar.
And every new round of fiscal excess makes global holders question the U.S.’s commitment to sound money.
Inflation doesn’t just hurt households — it erodes faith in the currency itself.
The more dollars we print to buy votes, the faster people hedge against it with hard assets.

Unfortunately, as Canadian business owner who holds a vast majority of his portolio in US Dollars (and private US businesses). This concerns me greatly and leads even myself to consider other currencies I believe will long term hold value better than the US Dollar.

“Tariff dividends” are just rebranded stimulus checks — inflation by another name.
Short-term political sugar highs with long-term monetary consequences.
Free money isn’t free.
It’s borrowed against the value of your currency — and it’s another step toward a world where gold, not the dollar, becomes the ultimate measure of trust.
