Read this slowly. The ceiling in your consulting firm is self-inflicted.

That’s not a criticism. It’s an observation I’ve made again and again, including in my own business.

Most consultants assume growth stalls because of the market, competition, pricing pressure, the economy, or some external force they cannot control. And while those factors exist, they are rarely the real constraint.

The constraint usually lives much closer to home.

It shows up in the kind of work you keep agreeing to even though you know it pulls you off positioning. It shows up in the client you hesitate to push back on because you do not want to risk the relationship. 

It shows up in the proposal you over-customize just to increase the odds of winning. It shows up in the discount you offer before the buyer even asks.

None of these decisions look dramatic in isolation. In fact, they often look responsible and pragmaticc.

But stack enough of them together and you slowly build a business that is busy, revenue-generating, and strangely capped at the same time.

Don’t be fooled. AI is supposed to make you faster. 
But is it really?

In my consulting business, I can do research in seconds, draft proposals and decks in minutes and create reports in no time. 

But now there is more to read than ever. 

Client data submitted using AI. 
Team drafts with three versions instead of one. 
Deep research market scans. 
Detailed AI meeting transcripts.
Summaries of third party reports.
....and then summaries of those summaries. 

The volume has simply exploded.

And you cannot just outsource judgment. You cannot just paste it all back into the LLM and say “decide”. Client nuance, commercial risk, tone, trade offs, those still require your experience. Sometimes you need more time to think or sleep over it to make decisions and recommendations.

So maybe writing and research got faster. But discernment has definitely become heavier.

Lead the software team through a series of product innovations enabling the creation of a market-place commerce system used by retail asset groups (Malls, Shopping Centres, etc).

Provide Agile process guidance to software development team to increase efficiency and delivery (lowering time-to-market) whilst increasing quality and transparency.

I lead very talented application development and application support teams and took on the ScrumMaster role, often acting as liaison between application development and product owner.

This included goal setting, performance evaluation and establishing and monitoring KPIs for my team, whilst also actively participating in architectual discussions to ensure that the team's output continued to be delivered at a high quality standard.

It was my responsibility to brief the executive team on various projects and operationalise upcoming projects for scheduling and delivery.

My responsibilities included the delivery of a custom developed ERP to the organisation through the effective management of the application development, support, and business analysis teams. 

I was charged with the recruitment and on-boarding of the Virtus Health Development Team. I on-boarded and lead a team of highly proficient developers and support team members to deliver on challenging healthcare solutions on aggressive timelines to support the growth the company was experiencing.

Once operational, we implemented an Agile framework where my role as Scrum Product Owner included planning and managing delivery of product releases in an iterative framework, and applying learnings from previous iterations in a process of continual improvements. I also lead the business analysis activities given my experience in the domain and had the privilege of working with many outstanding healthcare, administrative, and support individuals.

As Chair of the Audit Committee, I was responsible for the effective management of all funding received by PACT. I was held the Staff Portfolio for high level HR activities, and advisor to the Board on technology strategy.

I was entrusted to manage all aspects of IT in the organisation with a small team. I managed IT operations, IT procurement, software development, staff and finances/budgeting for the 12 clinics and two hospitals that made up the Group.

During my time as IT Manager, we rolled out a private cloud WAN over the state that linked together all regional clinics to the HQ in Brisbane, progress on the development of modules for the QFG software systems that underpinned QFGs Patient Management, Accounts, Andrology, Embryology, Pathology, and Genetics operations. 

With the help of a talented and hard working team we aligned the IT services to business strategy and achieved a true partnership with the business culminating in the IT Manager being invited to sit on the Executive Committee.
