I set out to achieve it in 2003, despite everyone telling me it could not be done. 

And there I was, a 23-year-old enjoying the entrepreneurial genes I had inherited from my serial entrepreneur father, building out what I'd later learn was a CPaaS ("communication platform as a service").

For most entrepreneurs, the first 9 businesses fail and the 10th succeeds. But for me, it was that first one which succeeded (and ran strong for 21 years)!

The Middle East treated me better as a woman in business.

The idea that Middle Eastern women aren’t respected? 
Not my reality.

And if you think Middle Eastern men don’t support women in business… 
you’ve never met the ones I worked with.

People often assume that being a woman in business in the Middle East is difficult.
My experience was the opposite.

In my early twenties, working in precious metals, walking through the gold souq, negotiating million-dollar deals, and meeting central banks.
I was treated with respect everywhere I went.

Not despite being a woman.
But because I showed up prepared.

The men I worked with, from the most traditional traders to the most senior bankers, were collaborative, generous, and deeply supportive.
Many opened doors for me.
Many vouched for me.
Some helped me win my earliest clients.

I felt safe.
I felt respected.
And yes, I was treated like a queen.

People ask me if it was hard.
My lived reality is that competence was recognised, effort was valued, and integrity travelled ahead of me.

Respect is universal.
But preparation is non-negotiable.

The narrative says women struggle here.
My career proves the opposite.

Being a woman never limited me here, it strengthened every room I walked into.

Elevating communication to serve humanity | Founder, MENA Speakers | Professional Speaker

I met Sultan the way you meet most neighbours in Dubai, by coincidence.

He lived in the apartment next to mine.
I had just arrived in the city.

What he didn’t know at the time was that my apartment was also my office.
I had turned the living room into a workspace because that’s all I could afford while launching a business.

One day he stepped inside, looked around the room, and said:
“How are you living like this?”

I told him the truth:
“I’ve just started the business. I don’t have a lot of cash. This is what I can afford right now.”

He shook his head and said,
“You can’t do this. You have to come to my office.”

He had a proper office in JLT.
I told him I couldn’t pay for that.

He said, “You don’t have to pay.”

I insisted.
“Can I pay 2,000? That’s what I have.”

He agreed.
And that small moment, neighbour to neighbour, became the beginning of something much bigger.

I began working from his office.
We started talking every day.
Ideas turned into collaborations.
And somewhere along the way, we went from neighbours to business partners.

He handled the events and travel side.
I focused on speakers and programming.
Together, we built what became MENA Speakers.

Then everything changed.
We had a small misunderstanding after a client meeting one of those moments where someone takes something the wrong way.

He was upset for two days.
When I realised, I went to him and said:
“I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean it like that.”

Alhamdulillah, we cleared it.
And that was the last time I saw him.

He went diving in Fujairah that weekend.
He never came back.

At 27, I found myself grieving a friend, a neighbour, a partner, while trying to hold together the business.

His wife and I had to dissolve deals, untangle commitments, and manage everything he used to run.

There was no space for emotions.
There was only responsibility.

For a long time, I didn’t feel anything.
My body went into survival mode.
The grief came years later.

Five years after he passed, I was in Spain when it finally hit me, all at once.

We really did go from strangers to building a life’s work.
And even though he’s not here anymore, Sultan is still part of the foundation of MENA Speakers.

In its values, culture and the way we treat people.

Some people walk into your life and immediately see the weight of your ambition.
Sultan did.

He walked into my apartment, saw an office built out of determination, not resources, and said one sentence that changed everything:

“Come to my office. Let’s build this properly.”

That kind of clarity and kindness stays with you.
 And becomes a standard.

I spoke to 14 real estate agents. Every single one failed.

Fourteen agents. Zero professionalism.
Real estate deals worth millions were handled like WhatsApp admin.

And I kept waiting for someone to show up with a basic level of professionalism.

A simple:
“Let me understand your needs.”
“Let me ask a few questions.”
“Can we meet for a coffee?”
“Let me guide you through the process.”

Instead, I saw the worst of the sales cycle.
WhatsApp messages as the primary method of communication.
Zero relationship building.

No discovery.
No listening.
No attempt to understand who I am or what I need.

Just:
“Here’s a link.”
“Do you want to view?”
“Are you ready to sign?”

It was purely transactional.
And honestly pretty shocking for an industry dealing with people’s biggest financial decisions.

I say it this way because I would pay a premium for someone who knows how to sell with competence, humanity, and structure.

So if I were to be won over by an agent, it would sound something like this:

1. Be consultative.
- Go meet your client.
- Sit with them.
- Ask questions.
- Understand the human behind the transaction.

If your entire business is conducted via WhatsApp, you’re not in sales, you’re in admin.

2. Introduce yourself properly.
- Tell people who you are.
- Share your background.
- Create a human connection.

You’re asking someone to trust you with millions.

3. Add value at every touchpoint.
- Educate your clients.
- Map out the process.
- Show them what happens next.

Be the guide they don’t even know they need.

4. Control the process.
- Don’t leave things open-ended.
- Don’t disappear.
- Don’t wait for the client to chase you.

This alone would transform the industry.

Say things like:
“Is it okay if I call you in two days?”
“Let’s schedule viewings for Saturday.”
“I’ll update you next week.”

Pace the process.
Create the experience.
Show you know what you’re doing.

The gap between an average experience and a remarkable one is shockingly small.
The agents who understand this will dominate the market.

The ones who don’t will keep sending links on WhatsApp and wonder why clients don’t trust them.

I once called the president of a country “a cutie.”
And yes, he blushed.

People assume that rooms filled with presidents, ministers, and global CEOs are purely formal.

They’re not.
They’re human.
If you know how to read them as humans.

A few years ago, I was at a private diplomatic dinner. 
The president of a country handed me his new book. A beautiful, heavy coffee-table edition.

I opened it, looked at one particular photo, and without thinking said:

“What a cutie.”
He laughed.
He blushed.
And the entire tone of the evening softened.

Not because the comment was clever, but because it was sincere.
And it landed in a moment that could hold it.

The formality dissolved with human warmth.

This is the part of communication people rarely talk about:

Authenticity truly has a frequency.
You have to know when the room can hold it.

If you misread the energy, it’s inappropriate.
If you read it well, it becomes connection.

This is the work I do on stage and off:

Navigating hierarchy, culture, power, and personality, while keeping the room human.

Many can follow a script.
Few can sense when a moment can hold honesty, warmth, or humour.

That is a different skill entirely.
And when you get it right, even a president will blush.

10 years ago when I first started leading people, 
I thought leadership was about planning.

Targets, five year plans, timelines, strategy.

I was wrong.

Those things matter, but they don’t create loyalty, trust, or culture.
People don’t remember your plans.
They remember how you made them feel in small, unexpected moments.

Over time, I’ve understood that leadership is built in the micro-moments.

The check-in message when someone’s quiet.
The patience when mistakes happen.
The humility to admit you don’t know it all.

Mentorship taught me that presence matters more than position.
And that listening, when done well, is an act of leadership on its own.

Five-year plans build direction.
Micro-moments build people.
Leadership lives in those moments, where humility meets humanity.

“Saana, take your Excel sheet and throw it out.”
He was laughing when he said it.

I had walked into Sultan’s office in a complete panic.

“I don’t think our runway is going to make it.
 I don’t think I can afford to pay the bills.
 I don’t think I can afford to pay salaries.”

I was 27.

We had just started MENA Speakers.
And my way of coping was to open Excel and try to calculate my way out of fear.

He listened, smiled, and then said:
“Take your Excel sheet and throw it out. Just focus on your work.”

That moment has stayed with me for almost ten years.

Every time I start worrying too far ahead…
Every time I feel my mind spiralling into “what if” and worst-case scenarios…

I remember him laughing, and I remember that sentence.

He wasn’t telling me not to plan.
He was reminding me that sometimes:

- The spreadsheet is not a strategy.
- The numbers do not always tell the real story.
- The fear is only temporary.

The part we control is the work in front of us.
The quality we bring.
The integrity we stand on.
The rest is provision.
The rest unfolds in ways no Excel sheet can predict.

So when I feel that familiar anxiety rise, I come back to his line:

Throw out the excel sheet
And
Do the work.

It’s a simple shift.
But it brings me back from panic to presence.

Someone once told me that MCing is just being a mouthpiece.
I laughed, because it’s a naive way to see what really happens on stage.

At this level, you’re not repeating lines, you're managing heads of state, global CEOs, and ministers. 
Every word, every pause, every tone carries weight.
You’re holding the energy of the room, not just a microphone.
Things shift by the minute.

A speaker’s running late.
A delegation walks in unannounced.
A comment on stage changes the entire atmosphere.

And you have to know how to respond, with tact, with timing, and complete composure.

I read the room in real time and create flow where there could be chaos.
When to raise energy. When to soften it. When to transition gracefully.
Every gesture, every pause, every segue is intentional.

Behind the curtain are invisible negotiations with ministers, CEOs, royals, global teams.
Each with their own hierarchy, culture, and sensitivities.
My job is to honour them all and protect the integrity of the event.

To respect the formality of a minister, the spontaneity of a CEO, and the cultural nuances of a royal or foreign delegate, all without offending anyone or breaking flow.

MCing at this level is about sensing what’s needed before anyone says it.

It’s listening between the lines, knowing when to improvise, when to hold the silence, and when to say “no” backstage. Even if ten people are insisting otherwise.

It’s the responsibility of keeping everything and everyone connected.
When it looks effortless, that’s when you know it’s done right.

Not a Mouthpiece

When people talk about “public speaking,” they think of the stage.
The lights. The slides. The performance.

But the most impressions are formed before you even start speaking.

In the way you enter the room, greet someone, or set your tone on a call.

You have less than a second and it often happens off-stage.

Here are four strategies I teach professionals to master:

1. PPPP — Purpose, People, Point, Payoff
Before any talk, know these four things:
 → Purpose: Why are you speaking?
 → People: Who are you really addressing?
 → Point: What do you want them to remember?
 → Payoff: What should change because of it?

If you can’t answer those four questions clearly, you’re not ready to speak.

2. Record Yourself (and watch it without sound)
You’ll learn more from 60 seconds of playback than from any feedback form.
Without sound, you’ll see your posture, energy, and micro-expressions, the unspoken signals that shape how people feel about you.

3. Nail Your Entrance and Exit
The first and last 10 seconds of any interaction matter more than the 10 minutes in between.
Your entrance sets emotional tone; your exit defines memory.
Plan both intentionally.

4. Rehearse Your Presence Beyond the Stage
Your “stage” is every meeting, voice note, and WhatsApp message.
Rehearse your tone the same way you’d rehearse a talk, not to perform, but to align your delivery with your intent.

Communication isn’t about perfection.
It’s about precision, awareness, and respect for your audience’s attention.

You have less than a second to show what kind of leader you are.

You Have Less Than 1 Second

People talk a lot about “confidence” in business.
The visible things. Presence, charisma, storytelling.

But the real foundation of influence is much simpler:
You must speak their language.

When I was in precious metals, I didn’t walk into meetings and hope people would take me seriously.

I studied.
I asked questions.
I wrote pages of notes.
I learned the lingo, the shortcuts, the abbreviations…
Bullion, kilo bars, purity, trade terms, pricing logic, market psychology.

Because if you don’t speak the language of the room,
you’re asking people to trust you without giving them a reason.

Competence always precedes connection.

Once you know the baseline once you’re fluent in the technical foundation, then people open up.
Then they respect you.
Then they see you as “one of us.”
And only then can you build real rapport.

It’s the same in every industry.
If you want to influence a client, a team, a boardroom. 
Learn how they think, the words they use and what matters to them.

This is about respect.
Because when you walk into a meeting prepared, informed, and fluent, you’re no longer trying to prove yourself.
You’re already part of the conversation.

Fluency precedes influence.
Every time.
