Leading With Care and Presence

John C. Maxwell said it best:
“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

And this truth came alive for me again this week.

I had the privilege of facilitating a workshop with a group of Senior Leaders in Hong Kong, leaders responsible for shaping culture, driving performance, and influencing many. 

But what shifted the room wasn’t authority or expertise.

It was servant leadership,  the willingness to serve first, lead second.

What moved people wasn’t another model or framework.
It was presence.
It was empathy.
It was choosing to show up with care, not ego.

What made it even more meaningful was co-facilitating with Patsy - from ex-colleague, to ex-customer, to now a working partner.

A full-circle moment that reminds me that leadership is ultimately about relationships built through trust, humility, and consistency.

Servant leadership isn’t soft.
It’s powerful.

Because when leaders care, people commit.

When leaders serve, teams rise.
When leaders are fully present, transformation happens.

In a world that often rewards speed and direction. 

May we be the leaders who choose care and presence because that’s where real influence begins.

Leaders don’t burn out because the work is heavy.

In coaching conversations, I see this all the time.
Leaders absorbing accountability that should sit with the team: decisions, tensions, unfinished tasks, even emotional labour.

It feels noble.
It looks responsible.
But it quietly weakens the team.

When leaders hold too much, others hold too little.

This week I uploaded 25th podcast episode of “Arena with Rajnish Kapur” on LinkedIn🎙️

A small but very significant milestone for me.

I persevered and did not give up many times when self doubt or my Inner Judge raised its voice to convince me that this was a futile effort! 
What am I gaining from this?

So let me share my journey,
I started the podcast with the intention of sharing my learning’s over the years, in the Armed forces plus corporate leadership, and from the many coaching conversations that continue to shape me. The objective being to support senior leaders navigating real pressures, real decisions, and real complexities.👥

It would be fair to say that Ten months back, when I started my intention was simple - to share my “Gyan”

But how wrong I was, what began as a medium to share my experience has become more of a journey of learning and growing for me.
Every episode has made me pause, reflect, and revisit my own experiences with a fresh lens.

Over these 25 episodes, I’ve enjoyed exploring topics that matter deeply to me- Fixed vs Growth Mindset, Courage in Leadership, Psychological Safety, Executive Presence, and Accountability.

One insight that has brought in a very powerful perspective is the strength of peer-to-peer accountability.

It keeps showing up in boardrooms, in coaching sessions, and in the everyday behaviour of high-performing teams.
And I’m still learning from it.💭

What kept me going?

It’s the occassional response of 
Leaders writing in to share their reflections. 
✉️ Professionals reverting with inputs that the podcast made them think differently. 
Friends and strangers meeting me in social gatherings and sharing that they have been quietly watching my series with interest. 

💡 that has been most gratifying. 

Additional bonus has been the coaching conversations and speaking opportunities that came up! 

I’m grateful to this platform for amplifying these messages. To the number of people who have commented and supported my efforts. 
And to the small team behind the scenes who work quietly to put each episode together- thank you.🙌

Imagine going for wedding of a Coursemates son and meeting so many old buddies some after 40 years !! Some for the first time !
Yet bonding in a way that only a “Band of Brothers” can.
These were the brothers we went to war with.
This is a real example of “camaraderie”

Coursemates are not made in a day — they are forged in fire.
They are the men who stood beside you in the toughest days of training, matched you step for step, and later trusted you — and were trusted by you — with life itself in uniform.

As a military veteran, camaraderie is not an idea; it is a lived truth. In moments of joy and in moments of crisis, it is always the coursemates who step forward first. They know your strengths, your scars, your journey — because they were part of it.

Yesterday, meeting many of them at a coursemate’s son’s wedding reminded me once again that even in our second innings, this brotherhood remains our strongest armour. The laughter, the warmth, and the unspoken understanding come back instantly, as if no time has passed.

Grateful for this lifelong bond of trust and togetherness. 🇮🇳
