John C. Maxwell said it best:
“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

And this truth came alive for me again this week.

I had the privilege of facilitating a workshop with a group of Senior Leaders in Hong Kong, leaders responsible for shaping culture, driving performance, and influencing many. 

But what shifted the room wasn’t authority or expertise.

It was servant leadership,  the willingness to serve first, lead second.

What moved people wasn’t another model or framework.
It was presence.
It was empathy.
It was choosing to show up with care, not ego.

What made it even more meaningful was co-facilitating with Patsy - from ex-colleague, to ex-customer, to now a working partner.

A full-circle moment that reminds me that leadership is ultimately about relationships built through trust, humility, and consistency.

Servant leadership isn’t soft.
It’s powerful.

Because when leaders care, people commit.

When leaders serve, teams rise.
When leaders are fully present, transformation happens.

In a world that often rewards speed and direction.

Life has a way of coming full circle

"Golden" the soundtrack from K-pop Demon Hunter has been topping the charts for months.

But the voice behind it? She almost never happened.

I've had this song on repeat for weeks. 

There's something about Ejae's voice - raw, powerful, unshakeable; that hits differently when you know her story. 

I've listened to the song on loop, reminding me that our setbacks are just setups for something greater. It's just so inspiring.

Ejae was 11 years old when her dream began. While other children played, she trained, hours of vocals, dance, perfecting every move. She practiced alongside girls who would become household names: future members of BLACKPINK, TWICE, global superstars.

She watched them debut. 
One by one, they stepped into the spotlight she'd worked so hard for.

But not her.

At 23, the dream died. In an industry obsessed with youth, she was told her moment had passed. 

Twelve years of sacrifice, sweat, & hope, dismissed because she'd aged out.

Heartbroken, Ejae left Seoul for New York. She studied music & psychology, trying to make sense of the pain, searching for a new purpose.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝘀.

Producer Andrew Chai saw something in her the industry had missed. 

He mentored her, not as a performer, but as a creator. 

And Ejae discovered a different kind of magic, writing songs that topped charts, crafting hits that made other artists shine.

She was behind the music everyone loved. 
Just invisible.

Then in 2024, the offer came: write for Demon Hunter's "Golden." This time, 
performs too.

Every doubt she'd buried came flooding back. 
The rejection. The years of watching others live her dream. 
The voice that whispered, "You're not enough."

But something had changed in those years of waiting. She'd found her voice, not just as a singer, but as an artist who'd lived enough to have something real to say.

I'm not Peranakan, but I've always loved this beautiful culture - the warmth of the people, the food, the intricate lace kebaya, and the rich traditions.

Thanks to Singapore's Culture Pass, I spent a wonderful Saturday afternoon at the Singapore Peranakan Mansion Museum in Joo Chiat with the ladies from the Phoenixus Group. It was a 5 star experience.

Here's what I learned:

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 

Peranakan culture began when Chinese traders arrived in Southeast Asia from the 15th century. Since few Chinese women made the journey, these men married local Malay women. Their children and the culture they created became something entirely new: neither fully Chinese nor fully Malay, but beautifully both.

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 

In Peranakan families, matriarchs arranged marriages carefully. Young women who mastered sewing, beading, and cooking were highly valued. These weren't just hobbies, they were proof of good upbringing and domestic ability. A woman who could embroider her own kebaya was considered accomplished and ready for marriage. 

Thank goodness I wasn't born in the 16th century. I would've been left on the shelf!

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝗯𝗮𝘆𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 

In the early 1900s, young Peranakan women wanted change. They found the traditional baju panjang too conservative. So they adopted the lace-embroidered kebaya that European women were wearing, making it their own with vibrant colors and intricate patterns. 

I'm proud to own 3 sets myself!

𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 

Nyonya cuisine is one of the world's original fusion foods - Chinese cooking techniques mixed with Malay spices. Think coconut milk, tamarind, lemongrass, and hand-pounded spice pastes. A skilled Nyonya could be judged just by the sound of her pounding spices with a mortar and pestle. (And yes a key criteria for marriage!) The time and care put into cooking wasn't just about feeding, it was about showing love.

My favorite dish - ayam buah keluak, babi pongteh, and bakwan kepiting.

It was a well spent Saturday afternoon. Spending time learning about cultures different from my own isn't just enriching; it keeps my minds active and curious. 

When we stay open to new experiences, we continue growing, no matter our age or background.

I won't sugarcoat it. The job market feels scary right now.

The reality:
• 2025 has seen more layoffs globally than during COVID
• Companies are freezing hiring amid market uncertainty
• AI is rewriting what "entry-level" even means
  
This week , I sat down with Channel News Asia, alongside Chun Wee Chiew to 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺: 

This isn't a crisis you can wait out. It's an 𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀. 𝗔nd the old playbook won't work anymore.

Here's what gives me hope: 𝗪𝗲'𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲.

Every industrial revolution, from IR 1.0 to 2.0 to 3.0 (from farms to factories, from typewriters to computers), brought the same fears. 
Jobs disappeared. 
Industries collapsed. 
People worried they'd be left behind.

And every single time? 
We adapted. 
We learned. 
We built new paths forward.

Understandably those who were impacted and refused to adapt were left behind.

This time? It's harder because everything is hitting at once. AI transformation. Geopolitical tensions. Trade wars.
We are facing the greatest inflection in our lifetime.

But you know what else is true? 𝗬𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸.

The skills that will matter most aren't technical; they're human. 
Adaptability. Resilience. 
The courage to reinvent yourself when the world changes around you.

In the interview, I shared practical strategies to navigate this shift; not just survive it, but use it to grow.

Because here's what I truly believe: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲, 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘇𝗲𝗱, 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻; 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆'𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲.

The eagle has always been my favorite animal. 
Not because of its power or majesty—though those are undeniable.

But because of what it represents: rising above the storm.

There's a verse that has grounded every major decision in my life—Isaiah 40:31:

Success is action.
Action is progress, not perfection.

I used to think I wasn't creative enough to paint.
Then I picked up a brush anyway.

My first painting versus my recent work. 
Far from perfect.
But miles ahead of where I started.

One thing that kept me going back to the art studio is documenting my progress. 

Seeing the progress I made is so cathartic.

And that is good enough for me.

Perfectionism keeps you stuck at the starting line. 
Progress gets you moving.

In my coaching work, perfectionism is the #1 blocker I see:
• Leaders who won't speak up until their idea is 'fully formed'
• Professionals who won't pivot until they have 'all the skills'
• People who won't reinvent until conditions are 'perfect'
  
But we all know  - "We get better by doing, not by waiting."

Let me ask you:  "What are you not starting because it won't be perfect?"

The breakthrough moment? 

When the team realized their differences weren't the problem. Not knowing how to work WITH those differences was.

In my 25+ years leading teams at M1, HSBC, UOB and Standard Chartered, I learned this the hard way: 

You can have the smartest people in the room, but if they don't gel as a team, performance suffers. Every time.

That's why I coach teams now—to help them understand the dynamics beneath the surface. 
The unspoken tensions. 
The misaligned expectations.

Learn to embrace the art of doing nothing
So instead of:

- Dismissing activities that don't boost productivity
- Wearing a packed calendar like a badge of honor
- Filtering every choice through the lens of work
- Micromanaging every minute of our schedule
- Obsessing over efficiency metrics
- Battling guilt during downtime
- Working 24/7


Slow down. 
Do these things instead:

- Call up your family
- Plan a retreat away 
- Gift yourself a digital detox day
- Master the art of saying 'no' gracefully
 - Put work at the bottom of your to-do list
- Say yes to impromptu adventures with friends
- Stop tracking time and just live in the present moment

I fully subscribe to this. 
I dedicate a "do nothing day" once a week.

I promise you will feel the benefits. 
And it will massively improve your productivity coming back.

So pause
Put your phone down. 
Prioritise doing nothing for a day.
