As of this morning, twelve of us will spend a wonderful dinner and all the next day giving birth to your book idea, helping you understand how to get it published, what the writing process should look like, etc. I hope you will join me in Atlanta, the evening of April 7 and all day April 8.

My first book was a ghostwriting job on the genetics of seed corn. I was in grad school at the time and working on my own thesis. The thesis was good--the book project, not so much.

My second was a series of three booklets that a big org paid me to put together from stuff I'd already written. The articles were good and they paid me $10k. It sold out in a few months, but wasn't good enough to reprint.

My third was "Managing Right for the First Time," conceived as I was speaking to a group of 500 creative directors at a HOW conference, where most of them admitted that their biggest challenge was migrating to managing people more than anything else. It didn't sell well, but it was a decent book, though it probably should have been a long article instead.

My fourth was "Financial Management of a Marketing Firm" and has made >$1m. It sells as a PDF or from a laser printer.

My fifth was "The Business of Expertise," and that 579 Amazon reviews (4.6 stars) and that's the one most people think of. The first two thirds of it are awesome.

My sixth was "Secret Tradecraft of Elite Advisors." I wrote it before the pandemic but sat on it for three years. It's at 259 reviews and also 4.6. I really, really love that book. The notion is that you should deliver your expertise in a certain way, after you develop it.

My seventh is "Selling Your Professional Service Firm." It's the best book I've written but it hasn't taken off like the others. Partly because it's written for a smaller audience (most of our work is M&A these days), but partly because I'm tired of the promotion train.

Anyway, all this to say that it takes awhile to find your voice, but mainly because I wish I'd had a guide while I was doing this stuff. I turned down two writing contracts and decided to go it alone. I look back on that decision and have zero regrets, but I also can help you navigate how to do a book without a traditional publisher, because odds are really good that you won't get an offer from a traditional publisher. And if you do, you probably should not take it.

Let's just figure this out together. Let me help you figure out what you believe about something.

Here's what Mark Mitchell (RIP) told me: "Writing a book was not as hard as I thought it would be. To get a first draft, I just started writing about what I know as if I was talking to someone. Before I knew it, I had written a book. As an author, I no longer have to prove my expertise. I am now sought out because I am the expert in my field. And as intimidating as it can be to set down 65,000 words in some sort of rational, sensible order, it’s the most fun ever." [It can be 24,000 words, though.]

It will change your life.

I rarely give the same talk twice—it bores me and I feel like I’m ripping off the audience. Going on a podcast for Brigadoon in a few mins, and then at 4:15p I’m on stage doing a short talk at the Sundance Mountain Resort in Utah. I’m going to make an observation about how we as humans have not adapted fast enough to account for the “crisis overload” that we get every day, even every minute. We can’t possibly care that much about that many things.

But if you’re a global citizen and your business is international, you’ll be a doofus if you don’t know what’s going on. And there’s the rub. How do you stay aware without feeling helpless.

My solution?

1) Ignore the people who are always telling me what I must care about or I’m some sort of evil person.

2) Focus on caring about the things that are most important to me and about which I can have some sort of impact.

Sounds heartless, I know, but the rest goes in the bin. I can’t possibly care about all the things people are demanding that I care about. I realize that some of you are going to take me to task for that, and it’s okay.

Here are my notes. I’ll give the talk and then never give it again.
