In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell’s voice barely carried across a single room. Less than forty years later, it crossed a continent.

For decades, the telephone was a local novelty. You could call across town, or perhaps a neighboring city on a clear day, but beyond fifty miles, voices dissolved into static. The sheer scale of the American landscape swallowed signals whole. At the time, many experts believed a coast-to-coast conversation was a physical impossibility—the laws of physics simply wouldn't allow a voice to survive the journey.

Bell engineers refused to accept the limit.
They launched one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in history, planting 130,000 telephone poles across mountain ranges, deserts, and plains. The turning point was a breakthrough in electronics: the vacuum tube repeater. These early amplifiers boosted weakening signals every few dozen miles, creating a seamless relay from the Atlantic to the Pacific. It was the first time electronics were deployed at a massive scale to conquer distance.

On January 25, 1915, Bell sat at a mahogany desk in New York City. His longtime assistant, Thomas Watson, waited in San Francisco—over 3,400 miles away.

Bell picked up the receiver and echoed the words that started it all:

“Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you.”
Watson’s voice came back crystal clear, followed by a laugh:

“It would take me a week now.”

For nearly an hour, they spoke about the weather and their early experiments, proving that the "hard wall" of distance had been breached. Even President Woodrow Wilson joined the line, hailing it as a milestone for national unity. The silence between the oceans was finally broken.

Every time I revisit this story, the arc feels familiar. A new technology hits a ceiling. Experts declare it can’t scale. Engineers rethink the infrastructure, introduce a new component, and push through the impossible.

Today, we’re watching that same leap unfold.

We’ve moved from copper wires to direct-to-mobile satellite connections. Everyday smartphones can now bypass cell towers entirely, bouncing signals from orbit to reach remote oceans, disaster zones, and "dead zones" that traditional networks could never touch.

I often wonder what Bell would think. The man who marveled at a voice traveling over copper would now see signals traveling hundreds of miles into space and back down to a device in a pocket.

As we head toward Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, that long arc of connectivity feels more alive than ever. From satellite-to-phone services and 6G research to AI-driven edge computing, the spirit of 1915 is still driving the industry.

Different tools. Same drive to erase distance. It leaves us with questions to ponder heading into MWC:

10 years from now, which "impossible" connection we’re debating today will feel as ordinary as a phone call across the street?

I used to borrow my roommate’s Apple Macintosh because I couldn’t afford my own. It had launched on this day in history: January 24, 1984 and what felt delightful wasn’t what it could do, but how it felt. The elegance. The intentionality. It felt designed, not merely assembled.

In those days, computers were all boring boxes. They were loud, sharp-edged, and unforgiving—objects you approached with caution. Then there was the Macintosh. Compact. Friendly. Almost disarming. It didn't feel like a machine you operated; it felt like an invitation.

The experience matched the form. Instead of cryptic commands, there were images. Instead of memorized keystrokes, there was a pointer. Files behaved like real objects. I could move things, make mistakes, and recover without fear. 

That’s when it clicked. This wasn’t about features. Apple had changed the rules. Technology no longer demanded that humans adapt to it; the interface finally respected how people actually see, think, and learn. Design wasn't the decoration—it was the breakthrough.

The ripple effects were immediate. Desktop publishing took off. Designers and writers showed up. Tools once locked inside bigger businesses were suddenly in the hands of small businesses. Personal computing became personal in the truest sense.

That same philosophy still runs through everything we touch today—smartphones, SaaS platforms, and cloud dashboards. Even modern AI tools follow a "Macintosh Law": Hide complexity. Reduce friction. Make the user feel capable.

As we move into the era of autonomous systems and agentic AI, the lesson is more relevant than ever. Raw intelligence doesn’t create trust. Elegance does. Clarity does. Good design still does the heavy lifting.

And yes, a full-circle moment: I still have a Macintosh today. (See the picture in the comment.)

•	The design and/or management of multimedia / TV facilities for many organizations, including AT&T, Financial News Network, MTV, NBC, Rutgers University, and many others.  

•	Acting as Engineer in Charge for countless commercial and industrial TV productions.

David's efforts have been recognized by many premiere industry organizations, serving as The Director of Emerging Technologies for the IMCCA; as an InfoComm Emerging Technology Fellow; as a NAB “Pick-Hits” judge for Broadcast Engineering; and as a repeat judge for the CES Innovation Awards. David is an award-winning blogger and contributor to technology publications, a frequent presenter at conferences, and is a member of many industry advisory boards.
