The biggest mistakes I see brands make in their email campaigns always involve:

5 Harsh Truths as an Agency Owner:
(After 13+ years of learning from mistakes)

In 2012, I launched my first brand.

I learned ecom the hard way. My stores collapsed, leaving me with $50k in debt and no customer list to save me.

But something clicked with email marketing and Klaviyo. I helped friends. Their friends. Then strangers who heard I knew email better than most.

That unofficial “side skill” became the foundation of FlowCandy, even though I didn’t know it at the time.

To get to where FlowCandy is now, I had to face some hard truths about my decisions and my habits.

Here’s what 13+ years of learning taught me:

1. Recognize the overlap of your passions and skills.
- Email came naturally to me. My stores didn’t.
- It took losing everything to realize skill ≠ business judgment.
- I felt passionately about email and had the skills to back it up.

2. Clients don’t need “creativity.” They need competence.
- Half the brands that hired me in the early days were missing someone who actually understood Klaviyo and could do the work correctly.
- What you might find obvious could be magic to someone else

3. Demand grows faster than your ability to handle it.
- Friends ➡️ referrals ➡️ strangers online.
- I hit capacity long before I admitted it… and I needed help.
- Admitting you need to hire out for tasks will solve 90% of your issues.

4. Your worst mistakes become the systems you scale with.
- We got fired more than once before FlowCandy got good results.
- Every painful moment turned into a checklist or a workflow.
- My mistakes turned into systems which got us even better results for clients.

5. You can’t help everyone.
- This was the hardest to accept. Some brands are disorganized, chaotic, or not ready.
- Saying “Yes” to everyone is how you burn out and deliver subpar work.
- Saying “No” to potential clients will make you more money in the long run.

These were my mistakes and how I learned from them.

Last week, I clocked 21 hours building out a new recruitment system for our team.
