OpenAI shared new data on how people actually use ChatGPT,

and it’s not what you’d expect.

Here’s what stood out from 1.1 million conversations 👇

1️⃣ 28.3% of all use is Practical Guidance 
↳ Things like tutoring, teaching, and how-to advice.
↳ People turn to AI to understand, learn, and make progress on real problems.

2️⃣ Writing makes up 28% of all use
↳ Most chats are about refining and improving what’s already written.
↳ AI is quietly becoming part of how people think and communicate.

3️⃣ Seeking Information doubled - to 21.3%
↳ People want direct, personal answers, not endless links.
↳ ChatGPT is becoming the go-to for clarity, not search results.

4️⃣ Technical Help dropped from 12% to around 7%
↳ Developers now rely on APIs and specialised copilots.
↳ Everyday users are exploring AI for learning and creativity instead.

5️⃣ Health, fitness, and self-care grew to 5.7%
↳ People already trust AI with workouts, diets, and routines.
↳ Behavioural guidance may become one of AI’s most human uses.

6️⃣ Product recommendations at only 2% today
↳ People are literally asking AI what to buy.
↳ Whoever builds the trusted “AI shopping layer” could own the next wave of search and discovery. 

7️⃣ Translation sits at 4.5%.
↳ And users don’t just want words translated
↳ They want tone, culture, and intent to carry through.

We talk a lot about AI replacing humans.
But to me, this data suggests the opposite.

People are using AI to become better humans...
to write better, learn faster, and make smarter choices.
