Over the past few years at Antler, I have had the privilege of working closely with founders at day zero. Across recent cohorts, we have reviewed nearly 6,000 applications, conducted over 1600+ interviews, and supported 220+ founders with residency.

Your first investor at idea stage | VC @ Antler | Investing in the best pre-seed founders in Australia

A few years ago, I would have been taking notes in that room. This week, I was on stage.

I sat on a panel at Growth Summit by SmartCompany next to investors I’ve followed for years. It was one of those moments where you realise you’ve grown into rooms you once felt intimidated by.

We spoke about things founders don’t always hear out loud:
 • Ideas change constantly. Founders matter more.
 • “Too early” often means “I’m not convinced.” Ask why.
 • AI moats are murkier than ever. Differentiation is a moving target.

Then the next morning, I was at a breakfast ahead of International Women’s Day with LaunchVic and the Alice Anderson Fund.
We spoke about progress in women’s participation across Victoria’s startup ecosystem. More women are building than there were a few years ago but capital allocation still tells a very uneven story.

I don't trust simple solutions to complex problems. Progress requires multiple levers: government co-investment, education, VC transparency and communities that challenge founders, not just cheer them on.
