How I write (and you can too):

So I almost always want to know three things before I start writing a “micro-lesson” for VeryGoodCopy:

What’s the story?
What’s the lesson?
And what is the word count?

𝟭.
The story:

I typically find the story 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵. It could be—and often is—a personal anecdote, something from my life, some happening or experience with my wife or kids or parents or friends. But it could also be about something I saw on tv, or read in a book, or witnessed at a gas station or the grocery store or, or, 𝘰𝘳—

I mine all the things that happen in and around my life—be they significant or mundane, painful, embarrassing, or joyous—for creative material, for relatable stories.

“Everything is copy,” said Nora Ephron. Damn right.

So where the story comes from is secondary to how it made me 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭. If it made me emotional, that’s a sign it will make someone else emotional.

“No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader,” said Robert Frost. Damn right.

𝟮.
The lesson:

If the story 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀 me of something I do for work—some concept, principle, or technique I use to write or think better—I have the lesson, the takeaway, the thing people can apply to 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 work (or life).

𝟯.
The word count:

I rarely write without a predetermined word count, which, believe it or not, I leave to chance. I simply ask the Machine to pick a random number for me. I open ChatGPT and type:

"Pick a number at random between 166 and 475."

And whatever arbitrary number the Thing spits out, that’s how many words I’ll aim to write. I don’t always hit the word count (usually because I run out of time and need to move on), but when I do—when I land on the 𝘦𝘹𝘢𝘤𝘵 number—the writing almost always feels more intentional, which I like.

Then, it’s like a puzzle:

How can I put 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 story and 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 lesson together in precisely 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 many words?

Writing immersive stories:

The miracle:

I watched a 60 Minutes segment I’ll never forget…

The late Ed Bradley interviewed a family—a religiously devout mother, a painfully quiet father who was so shy he couldn’t even look into the camera, and their ten-year-old daughter who was in a wheelchair because she was born with spina bifida.

Every year the family pilgrimaged to Lourdes to pray for a miracle. Bradley was incredulous about this. He didn’t understand their journey to the shrine. The trip didn’t make sense to him: the cost, the effort, year after year—and yet the small girl was still in a wheelchair, so weak she had to be strapped in to stay upright.

“What do you pray for?” Bradley asked the girl.

You know what she said?

“I pray my father won’t be so shy,” said the girl, looking at her dad. “It makes him feel so lonely.”

This answer seemed to stun the interviewer, who fell silent. Ed just sat there for a moment, speechless. Finally, he looked at the mother and said something like:

“Every year you spend so much time and so much effort to come to this place in hopes of a miracle,” he said, “but you have no miracle to show for it. Why do you keep coming back?”

You know what she said?

“Oh, Mr. Bradley,” said the mother, looking at her kid. “You don’t understand,” she said, “we 𝘨𝘰𝘵 our miracle.”

I’ll never forget it as long as I live.

I’ll never forget how this amazing child was able to hold space for someone else’s pain before her own—and how this affected Ed Bradley, his entire perception and understanding of Lourdes:

It’s a place that, more than anything else, reveals a person’s character, who they are.

“Oh, Mr. Bradley...” she said, “we 𝙜𝙤𝙩 our miracle.”

Copywriting icon John Carlton once told a room full of business owners:

“You’re probably not gonna find your product’s story in the company line.”

That is, the most compelling narratives—marketing or otherwise—are not necessarily clear and obvious. No, usually, the deepest, most profound, most resonant and moving insights are inconspicuous, hidden away.

As copywriters, such a big part of our work is to uncover these unobtrusive truths, to notice them, recognize them, and bring them to light.

“Everything happens for a reason"

It sounds comforting
It removes responsibility
It lets people outsource reflection to the universe

But in reality, most outcomes aren’t cosmic mysteries

They’re patterns

Patterns of

Avoiding hard conversations 
Delaying obvious decisions 
Choosing comfort over progress 
Hoping things improve without changing behavior 

That’s not pessimism
That’s feedback

The upside is this

If results are created by decisions, they can also be changed by them

No affirmations required
No vision board necessary
Just honesty, ownership, and better choices repeated long enough to matter

Progress isn’t spiritual

It’s practical

Here's my definition:

You take the risks alone
You create your own path
You decide the destination

The risk is all yours

The reward is all yours You don't answer to anyone

Yeah, I can hire a VA
The same way I hire a hairdresser

Neither gives a shit about my goals

And that's fine

The VA isn't there to help me create my path

The VA is there to take shit off my plate
So I can create my path

That's the distinction

Solopreneurship isn't about doing everything yourself

It's about owning everything yourself

The direction
The decisions
The consequences

You can build a team around you

Just don't confuse delegation with partnership

One takes tasks off your plate
The other shares your vision

Know which one you're working with

They have a language problem

When I was talking with Hayssam Al Amine on The Ripple Effect, I said something I wish more people took seriously:

Language isn't decoration
It's how you understand and build your world

If you only have five words for something, you only have five ways to think about it

That's why so many people hide behind clichés and buzzwords

They say "synergy" when they mean "working together"
They say "pivot" when they mean "we fùcked up"
They say "alignment" when they mean "I have no idea"

It's not that they're trying to sound clever

It's that they don't have the language for their own ideas

The real test is simple:

Could a six-year-old understand what you're saying?

If they can't, it's not deep, it's just unclear

The best leaders, coaches, speakers, founders?

They speak in simple, concrete language
They make big ideas easy
They communicate so everyone gets it

Don't mistake clarity for basic

It's a damn skill

So where does that leave me?

My job isn't to hype people up or protect their feelings
My job is to get them ready for a fight with reality

To help them step into the arena with something solid
To test and adapt
Until the market finally says:
"Yeah. That works"

Everything else is noise

They hate being told no

And because they hate hearing "no"they avoid doing the thing that might actually make them money

If you hate being pitched...that's exactly why you hate pitching

Every time I ask someone:"How do you feel when you get pitch-slapped?"

The answer is always the same:"I fucking hate it"

So instead of hiding from it...

Here's what changed everything for me:

I LOVE getting pitched

Someone jumps in my DMs like:"Hey Moe, can I show you something?"

And I'm like:

What you got?
Can you make me money today or nah?

Why would I shut that down?

I get to learn their whole system for free:
• How they hook attention in 3 seconds
• How they price without flinching
• How they handle my "fuck off" energy
• How they get me from DM to calendar
• What tech stack they're running
• How they position value vs price

Why would I turn down free sales training
Delivered straight to my inbox?

You control how you react to being pitched

You don't control how others react to YOU pitching

So fix the one you can control

The moment you stop being weird about being pitched
You stop being weird about pitching too

Somewhere between recipe blogs and food influencers, there’s a fridge nobody should’ve opened

Not because anything’s gone off

But because none of this should’ve gone in

This is food made by people who asked “what if?”

And then didn’t wait for the answer

That’s where a lot of smart people get stuck

I don't care what most people think

Sounds arrogant

But here's the thing:

The only people I pay attention to are the ones who have things I want

And there's very few of them

Not because I'm better than everyone else
But because I'm in competition with myself

That's it

Everything I do is designed to make me feel more whole

And the people who have a problem with that?

They're usually hiding behind some sort of mask
Trying to show something that isn't true about themselves

They're uncomfortable in their own skin

So when someone shows up who isn't playing that game
It rubs them the wrong way

Meanwhile, the people who've built what I'm building toward?

They never have a problem with how I am

Because they're comfortable in their own skin too

That's the prerequisite

If I had kids, that's the one thing I'd be trying to raise them with:

Be comfortable in your own skin

If you're not, there's something you need to fix

Not your strategy
Not your content
Not your offer

That came up in a conversation with Caleb Stapp, CPFA 

Because most people overcomplicate this part

They try to reverse-engineer a purpose from a job title

They look for something neat, impressive, easy to explain at a dinner party

Caleb didn’t do that

He knows what he’s built for: Connecting people

Leading people
Helping people change direction and make an impact
And he does that wherever he shows up

Ministry
Financial services
Running his own practice

Different roles
Same wiring

That’s the bit people miss when they’re navigating a pivot

You’re not starting from zero
You’re not abandoning who you are
You’re just expressing the same strengths in a different arena

Titles change
Industries change
Your core usually doesn’t

The trick isn’t finding the perfect label

It’s being honest about what you actually do, then letting the work speak for itself

If you're getting neither, you're not being misunderstood

Founders love saying things like:
"We're pre-revenue"
"We're building community"
"We're just refining the offer"

The market heard that and replied with silence

So where does that leave me?

My job isn't to hype people up or protect their feelings
My job is to get them ready to collide with reality

Test
Sell
Adjust
Repeat

Until the market finally shrugs and says:
"Yeah… that works"
