History hasn’t always been kind to lazy people.

The word itself traces back to Old Dutch, Norse, German, and French roots meaning averse to effort.” In 1785, lazy tongs” were described as an instrument for old or very fat people to pick things up without stooping.” 
Charming.

Clearly, they had not discovered the Lazy Susan. Possibly the greatest innovation in kitchen efficiency.

And Bill Gates famously said:
"I always choose a lazy person to do a hard job, because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it.”

What he really meant was this: the best leaders are not the busiest. They are the most efficient.

Which brings me to LinkedIn:
Many executives are told to post constantly. Five times a week. Spend hours creating content. Treat it like a second job.

My advice: don’t.

Instead, replace your content creation strategy with a comment creation strategy.

Follow 10 people who are influential in your target ecosystem. People whose attention, perspective, or network would genuinely matter to you.

Then spend just 30 minutes a week leaving thoughtful, intelligent comments on their posts.

Three simple ways to do this well:

1. The Compliment
"I found this particularly insightful because…”
Be specific. Specificity signals credibility.

2. The Complement
"This connects with something I’ve been seeing in my own work…”
Add perspective. This positions you as a peer, not a spectator.

3. The Respectful Challenger
"An alternative lens here might be…”
This signals independent thinking. The mark of an executive, not an observer.

Do this consistently, and something subtle but powerful happens.
You stop trying to prove your value.
People start recognising it.
Because senior opportunities rarely go to the most visible person.
They go to the person who is consistently seen adding value in the right rooms.

Sometimes the smartest career move isn’t doing more.
It’s doing less, but doing it where it counts.

That’s how executives get seen, valued, and paid at the level they deserve.

He was calm when he said it.

“I don’t understand. I delivered everything. And still … not this cycle.”

Senior leader. Strong results. High visibility.
Passed over.

That moment? That’s the thorn.
And this is where most executives make a mistake.

They either:
– work harder
– withdraw quietly
– or start job searching emotionally

But at this altitude, promotions aren’t about effort.

They’re about narrative.

So instead of asking, “Why them?”
Ask: What story did the organisation believe about them, that they don’t yet believe about me?

Before you react, do three things:

	1.	Ask for the specific capability gap. Not “development areas.” Specifics.

	2.	Test your market value externally. Three conversations. Data beats emotion.

	3.	Decide deliberately: build leverage internally, or redeploy externally.

Reframing isn’t positivity.
It’s power.

Sometimes what feels like rejection is just information.

And information, used well, becomes leverage.
