Is it a good time to visit Jamaica this winter?
That was the DM I woke up to.

Simple question. Loaded consequences.

Because when someone asks me that, they aren’t talking about flights.
They’re talking about fear.
They’re talking about the headlines.
They’re talking about what they think Jamaica looks like right now.

So let’s get honest.

Two things are true at the same time:

 1. Hotels from Negril to Ocho Rios are open and taking bookings.
 2. And communities across the island are still rebuilding piece by piece.

Both realities exist.
Both matter.
And both tell the real story of Jamaica right now.

Some context most visitors never see:

→ Tourism pumps over US $4.3B into the economy
→ 175,000 people rely on it directly
→ Over 350,000 families feel the ripple
→ Each visitor dollar can pass through up to 7 local hands

So when tourists come, recovery moves faster.
When they stay home, everything slows.

Drivers lose routes.
Small guesthouses lose bookings.
Families lose the income that pays school fees, groceries, medical bills.

That’s the part the DM didn’t see.

But here’s the twist no one expects:

Jamaica is more ready than people think.
Guesthouses from Negril to Port Antonio are open.

→ Community hosts rebuild faster because cash flow returns
→ Local shops survive because money circulates again

This is why the “tourism is optional” conversation misses the point entirely.

Tourism isn’t decoration.
Tourism is circulation.
Tourism is liquidity in a crisis.
Tourism is the difference between rebuilding in months or rebuilding in years.

Because when a house collapses, the real loss isn’t only the walls.
The real loss is the income that lived inside those walls.

The question should not be:

“When will Jamaica rebuild?”
