In other countries, entrepreneurs worry about competition. In Pakistan, we worry about someone literally stealing electricity from our office meter.

Look at these numbers in the picture.
17 Jul - 17 Aug: 920 units
17 Aug - 17 Sep: 1467 units
17 Sep - 17 Oct: 1167 units
17 Oct - 17 Nov: 4569 units
17 Nov - 17 Dec: 760 units

Notice anything? October’s bill is 4X our normal usage.

We didn’t add new equipment. We didn’t start mining Bitcoin. We didn’t leave ACs running 24/7.
Someone just connected their wiring to our meter.
Either the bank on ground floor (who did renovation in these months) or someone from the plaza construction work, we don’t know exactly who.
But someone is using OUR electricity and WE are paying for it.

You know what the worst part is? This is so common in Pakistan that when I told my electrician, he just said “haan, hota rehta hai.”
Remember my post about running a business in Pakistan being “jihad”? This is exactly what I meant.

It’s not just:
∙ Landlords breaking commitments
∙ Government tax complications
∙ Infrastructure failures
∙ Load shedding in main Islamabad
Add to that list:
∙ People literally stealing your electricity
∙ And acting like it’s normal
∙ And you having to prove it’s happening
∙ And fighting to fix something that shouldn’t happen in the first place

What We’re Doing:
We’ve called our electrician to investigate the wiring.
We’re going to confront whoever connected their load to our meter.
We’ll probably have to spend money fixing something we didn’t break.
Just another day of entrepreneurship in Pakistan.
