I walked away from a career I spent 20 years building without knowing what would replace it.

I was told that if I stepped into what I was supposed to do, the help I needed would come.

A month later, an ex-university classmate I hadn’t spoken to in almost twenty years reached out.

We met.

Weeks later, I found myself in Fukuoka meeting Marie Kondo, the globally renowned tidying expert behind the Netflix series Tidying Up, followed by over 4 million people worldwide.

She and her husband were building the Joy Movement.
And I was invited to be part of the core team.

Completely aligned!

Awakening people.
Spreading joy.
Building something larger than myself.

And then more “miracles” followed which will be more stories for another day.

But here’s what really changed for me the day I decided to do what I am supposed to do on earth.

Conviction returned.
Flow returned.
Joy returned.

Not because life became easy (newsflash: I still have my challenges)

But because I stopped building a life that wasn’t truly mine.

Looking back, the stagnation, the dissatisfaction, even the six-figure scam, they weren’t punishment.

They were redirection.

If you are 天命人, you cannot sustainably play small.
Eventually, life will disrupt what is comfortable.

And in a Fire Horse year, known for intensity, bold shifts, and forcing change, misalignment doesn’t stay hidden for long.

So please don't wait for life to force your hand.

Documenting my journey of scaling without losing my soul

Things that don’t matter in your 30s
(from a 45-year-old who has been there).

I just turned 45.

If I could speak to my 30-year-old self, here’s what I would say:
There are five things that don’t matter as much as you think.

1. Being popular.

Popularity is flaky at best. It comes and goes depending on your success, your relevance, your usefulness. The moment something goes wrong, watch how quickly praise turns into distance or worse, gossip. And the more popular you become, the more jealousy you attract. You don’t need that distraction when you’re still building.

2. Being right all the time.

You don’t have to win every argument just to feel good about yourself. Most people don’t change their minds because you argue better. Pride gets in the way. All you do is drain energy and risk damaging relationships you may need later. Sometimes it’s wiser to stay silent and let results speak.

3. Avoiding failure to protect your ego.

Your 30s are the best time to make mistakes. This is where you gain real experience, the kind that prepares you for bigger responsibilities later. Don’t let early success make you play safe. In your 30s, you’re still allowed to experiment. That window doesn’t last forever.

4. Keeping up with lifestyle inflation.

When income increases, lifestyle often follows immediately - luxury condo, sports car, branded everything. It feels like progress. But many people in their 30s are upgrading expenses, not building wealth. They look successful but are financially fragile. Freedom in your 40s and 50s depends on discipline in your 30s. Invest. Build assets. Create options. Image impresses strangers. Assets protect your future.

5. Trying to figure everything out.

There’s pressure in your 30s to “have it together.” Career path. Marriage. Kids. Investments. Five-year plan. Ten-year plan. But you are going to live a long life. Your 30s are just one chapter. Don’t rush to appear settled and lose the joy of discovery.

And stop asking everyone how you should live your life. Most people project their own fears and regrets onto you even if they mean well.

Your 30s are for building useful skills. Gaining real experiences. Expanding your network. Accumulating resources. And most importantly, getting to know yourself - your strengths, your weaknesses, your values, your purpose.

Because when you reach your 40s, you don’t want to still be experimenting with identity. You want to spend the next decade building something aligned with who you truly are, not who you were trying to impress.

Last August, someone I trusted said to me, "Eric, your time is running out.’”

Not in a dying way.
But in a destiny way.

Let me explain.

Many of us (you too!) are born with a God-given mission.

No, it may not be your current career. 
And no, it is also not some role that our society rewards.

It is a unique task that only you can fulfill in this lifetime.

Think about every hero story:

Neo in The Matrix. 
Moses. 
Even characters like Naruto or Luffy.

They were different.
They didn’t fully fit in.
And they were all called to something bigger.

They are all people with a calling (or in mandarin, we say 天命人).

Now here’s the part people don’t talk about.

If you don’t use your gifts for what they were meant for, they get taken away.

It’s like the Parable of the Talents in the Bible.
The servant who buried his gift lost it.
The ones who used theirs were given more.

Back to my story.

When I met Huiteng (who can read into people's life missions), she told me, "Eric, you are good at branding and speaking. But you are not using your gifts for what they were actually given to you for.”

That hit. 

I was succeeding.
But I didn’t feel fulfilled.

There was always this feeling… like something was missing, but I couldn’t name it.

Then she said something really drastic, “If you don’t step into your real mission, life will disrupt what is comfortable until you do.”

It already did for almost two years.

I lost passion for the work I used to love.
Money didn’t come as easily as before.
Problems in my professional and personal life started stacking up.
I even got scammed six figures.

Looking back, I realize it wasn’t punishment.
It was redirection.

So if you too have been feeling stuck, restless or things keep falling apart for no clear reason…

Maybe you’re not unlucky.
Maybe you’re just misaligned.

And life is trying to move you toward what you were actually meant to do.

In my next post, I’ll share the clear signs that you might be called for a greater purpose i.e. 天命人.

Why do hateful comments hurt more on some days than others?

I recently came across an old interview with Anne Hathaway (video below) where she spoke about dealing with online hate.

At first, she was deeply affected by the criticism.
Later, she realised why.

Because she hadn’t learned to fully love herself yet.

In her words: “If you don’t love yourself, when someone says horrible things, a part of you is always going to believe them.”

That line stayed with me which inspired this morning's post. 

Hate only lands where there is a "soft spot".

If someone insults you about something you’re completely secure in, it barely registers.

But if they touch an insecurity you already carry, even lightly, it stings.

For example, if someone calls me “fat,” it wouldn’t affect me. I know it’s not true. And even if it were, weight has never been my insecurity.

But if someone commented on my hairline a year ago?

That would have hurt because that was something I had been insecure about for a long time.

Now that I’ve addressed it and feel secure about it, the same comment wouldn’t land the same way.

This is why inner work is so important! 

Not to silence your critics.
But to strengthen the parts of you that still feel fragile.

So the next time you receive a criticism that affects you, instead of asking, “How do I shut them up?”

Ask, “Why did that affect me?”

That question will change more than any argument ever will.

Pay attention to the final sign.

1. You never fully felt like you belong.

Even when you fit in, you feel slightly different.
Like you’re observing the world more than blending into it.

You can function in society.
But deep down, you know you’re not here to just fit in.

2. Your life has been unusually hard.

Not normal challenges.
But intense seasons. Pressure. Loss. Setbacks.
Almost like you’ve been trained through adversity.

3. Success doesn’t fully satisfy you.

Even when things look good.
Even when others think you’ve made it.

There’s still a quiet voice saying,
“Something is still missing.”

4. You have natural abilities you can’t explain.

You read people easily.
You sense energy shifts instantly.
People trust you quickly.
Your words carry unusual weight.
Things that feel normal to you but don’t to others.

5. You can’t get away with playing small.

When you settle for superficial success…

Energy drains.
Flow slows.
Things fall apart.

Ordinary success feels empty.

Disruptions increase.

How do you deal with haters... without losing your peace?

Let’s be honest.

Being talked about behind your back hurts.
Especially when you’ve done nothing wrong.

But inner work can change how you interpret it.

Here’s what I’ve learned over the years of dealing with my haters (and gossipers).

1. When they criticise you, it reveals more about them than you. 

When someone speaks negatively about you, it often reveals their insecurity more than your identity. What sounds like an attack may actually be envy, fear, comparison, or unresolved pain speaking.

Before you absorb it as truth, ask yourself: Is this really about me… or their unresolved pain?

2. Not everyone deserves your defence.

If someone chooses to talk ABOUT you instead of TO you, that tells you something about their maturity.

People who value truth will come to you for clarification.
People who value drama will gather an audience.

Before you rush to explain yourself, ask: Is this a conversation worth having or just noise not worth entering?

3. Your trigger is your teacher.

If their words sting deeply, pause.

Strong reactions often point to something tender inside you. Sometimes criticism hurts because it touches an insecurity that hasn’t fully healed.

Before blaming them, ask: What part of me still needs assurance or growth?

4. Protect your energy, not your image.

Trying to control how everyone sees you will exhaust you. In fact, the more you chase acceptance, the more power you give away (to them).

Reputation lives in other people’s minds.
Character lives in your daily actions.

Before defending your name in future, ask: Am I protecting my reputation… or my peace?

5. Let your integrity outlast the noise.

You cannot out-talk gossip. But you can outgrow it.

Consistency exposes exaggeration.
Time exposes truth.

Before responding, ask: Will this matter in a year or is my ego just uncomfortable today?

The truth is no one truly “hates” you.

They are just reacting to what you represent, what you trigger, or what they haven’t resolved in themselves.

So instead of silencing your critics, you are better of learning how to master your response to your critics.

Some of the most successful people I know are deeply unfulfilled.
Not because they failed.

But because they succeeded at the wrong thing.

Career is going well.
Income is stable.
People around them think they’ve “made it”.

Yet there’s a quiet feeling inside that refuses to go away:
“This can’t be all I’m here for.”

A few days ago someone asked me a question many people secretly are asking too: “How do you know if there’s something bigger you’re meant to do?”

From what I’ve seen, clarity about your deeper calling usually comes in two ways.

1. Honest conversations with yourself

Questions most people avoid:
- If money wasn’t an issue, what would I actually want to do with my life?
- If my life were a movie, what story would I want it to tell?

These questions sound simple.

But when answered honestly, they reveal what your soul actually cares about.

2. The right guidance

Sometimes we need someone who can see what we cannot see ourselves.

Not someone who decides our path.

But someone who can help reveal:
- your natural gifts
- your patterns
- the direction your life energy seems to be moving toward

Even then, clarity rarely arrives all at once.

It grows through movement.

The only thing you really need at the start is WILLINGNESS!

The willingness to move when you feel the pull.

And the COURAGE to take the first step before everything makes sense.

Each step then becomes feedback.

You ask yourself:
- Did this make me feel alive?
- Did this create something meaningful for others?

If yes, you keep moving.

Even setbacks become part of the path.

Looking back at my own journey, some of the hardest moments eventually became the experiences that shaped the work I now feel most aligned with.

Nothing was wasted.

So if you’ve been feeling that quiet pull lately…
Please don’t ignore it.

Sometimes that feeling is the beginning of your real life work calling you forward.

Most people are proud that they’ve “done their will.”

They say it with relief.
Like they’ve ticked the final responsible-adult box.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth:
A will is not a legacy plan.
It’s a legal document.
And legal documents don’t prevent family wars.

I’ve seen estates that were “perfectly drafted.”
Yet:
• Siblings stopped talking.
• Properties had to be fire-sold.
• Executors were overwhelmed.
• Beneficiaries were asset-rich but cash-poor.
• Families spent years in tension.
Everything was legally correct.
Emotionally? Financially?
A disaster.


Here’s what most people focus on:
“Who gets what?”

Here’s what they ignore:
• Who pays the taxes?
• Where does the liquidity come from?

The S&P 500 delivered around 18% per annum in the 1990s.
The following decade?
Roughly 10 years of almost no return.
Imagine:
Entering at the peak with excitement.
Exiting at the bottom with frustration.
Same market. Very different outcomes. All driven by behaviour.

Create a structure before emotions hit
Set expectations properly

Let me say something unpopular.
Most of us didn’t buy insurance.
We bought a private hospital subscription and expected someone else to fund it forever.

Every Singaporean already has catastrophic coverage under MediShield Life.
Everything above that?

Choice.
Private hospital access? Choice.
Full rider with zero deductible? Choice.
Specialist hopping without cost-sharing? Choice.

Then claims surge.
Bills rise.

The most dangerous combination in estate planning.
I’ve sat across the table from families who were wealthy.

Multiple properties.
Investment portfolios.
Business equity.
On paper? Impressive.
In reality?
No cash.

Let me say something:
Some people don’t leave wealth.

In places like Singapore, property obsession is real.
Condo. Landed. Rental unit.

You cannot pay legal fees with floor tiles.

Liquidity is love.
Immediate cash:
Pays off loans.

I’ve witnessed estates and trusts where insurance proceeds came in quickly.
The difference was night and day.
Calm conversations.
No panic selling.
No family tension.
Same net worth.
Completely different experience.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth from my years in this business:
People optimise for returns.
Very few optimise for transfer efficiency.
They spend decades chasing yield.
But almost zero time asking:
“If I’m gone tomorrow, who pays the bills next month?”

Asset allocation matters.
But estate liquidity allocation matters more.
Because when you’re no longer around…
Cash flow is not theory.
It’s oxygen.

So the real question isn’t:
“How big is your estate?”
It’s:

There are 2 ways to read the news.

1) As a responsible citizen.
You stay informed.
You understand policies.
You vote wisely.
You care about society.

10 things that irritate me about the financial planning industry.

After 21 years in this space, I’ve seen the good, the bad… and the nonsense.

Here are 10 things that honestly frustrate me:
1. Selling products disguised as “planning.”
If the conversation starts with a product, it was never planning.

2. Overpromising returns.
Anyone who talks about consistent double-digit returns without talking about risk is not educating, they’re marketing.

3. Fear-based selling.
“Buy this or your family will suffer.”
We should guide with clarity, not scare people into decisions.

4. Ignoring behaviour.
The biggest risk to wealth isn’t the market.
It’s human emotion. Yet many plans don’t address behaviour at all.

5. Complex for the sake of looking smart.
If your client doesn’t understand it, it’s not brilliance. It’s insecurity.

6. No integration.
Investments here. Insurance there. Estate planning somewhere else.
Real planning connects everything.

7. Asset rich, cash poor planning.
A beautiful net worth statement means nothing if your beneficiaries inherit a liquidity mess.

8. Performance chasing.
Last year’s winner becomes this year’s recommendation.
That’s not strategy. That’s reaction.

9. No clear philosophy.
Ask 10 advisers why they invest the way they do — many can’t explain beyond “this fund is good."

10. No transformation.
Planning isn’t about spreadsheets.
It’s about helping someone move from anxiety → clarity → confidence.

With the war in Iran, what are your thoughts, Greg? And how should I start thinking about my investments? There is so much fear and uncertainty in the world right now.

When uncertainty increases, this is a lesson from the dark days of COVID.

Do you remember?

It was March 2020. The world came to a sudden halt. Borders closed. Streets emptied. Panic set in.

The headlines were terrifying. The markets were plummeting. The Straits Times Index dropped by more than 30%. The S&P 500 fell into a bear market in record time.

For many, it felt like the financial world was collapsing.

Clients called, worried. Some were ready to cash out everything. The fear was real and justified. After all, we’d never lived through a pandemic like that before.

But here’s the part most people forget.

By the end of 2020, the markets had bounced back. In fact, many portfolios not only recovered, but grew significantly beyond pre-COVID levels within the following 12 to 18 months.

How are we here to give you assurance and confidence, especially using evidence based strategies in all seasons of time?

1. Focus on things we can control.
We focus on asset allocation. We focus on our CPF life, our active income, our emergency cash, fixed deposits, T bills, managed cash accounts, our fixed income and then finally our equity allocation, in this order.

2. Take advantage of the situation.
Rebalancing is a key part of what we can do. And so if something has come down and has become more attractively priced, we will start to buy more on the drops and sell those that have gone up.

3. Evidence based strategies gives us confidence.
We are constantly buying more companies that are smaller than the largest companies, buying cheaper companies, and buying higher profit companies. These strategies have been constant in good times and bad times and never change. If valuations have changed, rebalancing is done on a regular basis, daily.

4. Global portfolio provides peace of mind and confidence.
We never know which country, sector or company will outperform this year neither will we know which can be in the doldrums for a long time. Diversification is your best friend.

5. Extend your perspective of time horizon.
Most of us are planning for big goals that span as far as 20-30yrs even after retirement. 5yrs time, we would have forgotten that there was a crisis.

6. Buy more during discounts.
When do you like to buy things, at normal price or at discount? Buy now.

7. Do not keep checking your portfolio.
Most of our biggest goals are in decades and multi decades, which last well into 80s till life expectancy. Imagine driving from Singapore to Penang. No point stopping the car to check the map every 100m.

8. Read the news as a responsible citizen but not to make decisions to tweak your investment portfolio.

You don’t retire because you hit 55, 60, or 65.
You retire because your money can outlive your ego.

Most people asking, “Am I ready to retire?” are actually asking a different question:
“Can I stop working and still live the life I’m used to, without fear?”

Let’s be honest.
Retirement isn’t a math problem.
It’s a psychology test disguised as a math problem.

1️⃣ If You Still Check Your Portfolio Daily, You’re Not Ready.
If a 10% market drop ruins your sleep, imagine a 30% drawdown.
Look at history:
S&P 500 fell ~50% in 2008.
It also delivered almost nothing in the 2000–2010 decade.
Retirement means: You are no longer accumulating.
You are withdrawing while volatility is attacking.
If market swings control your mood, you’re not financially ready, you’re emotionally exposed.

2️⃣ If Your Plan Depends on “Average Returns”, You’re Gambling.
I cringe when I hear: “My portfolio gives 8% a year.”
Average returns are irrelevant.
What matters in retirement:
Sequence of returns risk
Cash flow sustainability
Longevity risk (you may live longer than you think)
A bad first 5 years can permanently damage your retirement, even if long-term averages look great on paper.
If your retirement spreadsheet only shows a straight upward line…
You’re not planning.
You’re hoping.

3️⃣ If Your Lifestyle Is Inflating, You’re Not Ready.
Retirement doesn’t reduce spending.
In Singapore especially:
Healthcare costs rise.
Insurance premiums rise.
Lifestyle expectations rise.
Your income may stop.
But inflation doesn’t retire with you.
If your expenses are flexible, you’re safer.
If your expenses are fixed and luxurious, you’re vulnerable.

4️⃣ If You Haven’t Stress-Tested 30+ Years, You’re Guessing.
Life expectancy is increasing.
Many will live into their 90s.
Ask yourself:
What happens if you live to 95?
What happens if markets stagnate for 10 years?
What happens if medical costs spike?
If you don’t have a withdrawal strategy, not just a target sum, you’re not ready.

So When Are You Ready?
You’re ready when:
✔️ Your essential expenses are covered by stable income sources (CPF LIFE, annuities, bonds, global diversified portfolios).
✔️ Your portfolio survives a 30–40% crash on paper — and you still don’t panic.
✔️ You’ve separated lifestyle wants from survival needs.
✔️ You understand that retirement is a cash-flow engineering problem, not a net-worth number.

And here’s the controversial truth:
Most people don’t retire because they can’t afford to.
They retire because they are tired.
And that is the most dangerous reason of all.
Retirement is not about hitting a number.
It’s about building a system where: Money works. Emotions don’t sabotage. And time becomes your asset, not your liability.

If you had to stop earning tomorrow…
Would your plan survive?
Or is your retirement still depending on optimism?

Stop selling your time. This is the employee trap.

This will offend some people.
But it needs to be said...

If your only strategy to build wealth is to sell your time… you are trapped.
Yes, employment is stable.
Yes, it pays the bills.
Yes, it feels safe.

But let’s call it what it is.
You are exchanging your life hours for money.
And there’s a ceiling.
No matter how talented you are, you still have 24 hours a day.

No matter how loyal you are, your income is still tied to someone else’s decision.
Promotion. Bonus. Retrenchment.
You don’t control the machine.

After 21 years in this industry, I’ve seen doctors and high-income professionals earning $300k, $500k, even more.

Asset rich? Sometimes.
Cash flow secure? Often.
Financially free? Rare.

Because most of them are still in the employee trap.
High income.
Low ownership.
Minimal scalable assets.
They optimise salary increments.
But ignore asset allocation.
They negotiate bonuses.
But don’t negotiate their freedom.

Smart wealth management is not about chasing higher pay.
It’s about shifting from:
Time income → Asset income.
Your salary is active income.

Your portfolio should be building independent income.
Dividends.
Business equity.
Rental cash flow.
Compounding capital.
Assets that work when you don’t.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth:
If you stop working tomorrow, how long will your lifestyle last?
6 months?
2 years?
Or forever?

That question determines whether you are building wealth… or just maintaining an expensive lifestyle.


I’m not saying quit your job.
I’m saying:
Don’t let your job be your only asset.
Use employment as a capital engine.
Convert income into ownership.

If we dare to open our hearts to encounter Jesus, his Spirit, that is within us, will surely bless us with a life-changing experience.

When I reflect back in my life, I notice that when I remember to let God take over and open my heart, actually, many surprising miracles and blessings happen, mostly unexpectedly.

So as I am entering this season of life, I feel like I want to open my own heart to encounter Jesus. Sometimes, we chase things and we cannot get fulfillment in life, unless we chase Christ, who provides the lifelong never-ending fulfillment. And for me to constantly continue to have the life changing experience that we all long for in our lives.

What was that turning point in your life that quietly changed everything?

Not the big dramatic moment.
Not the overnight success.
But the internal shift.

For me, it was this:
I stopped trying to control outcomes…
And started mastering inputs.

I cannot control:
Whether the market goes up or down.
Whether a client says yes or no.
Whether the economy enters a recession.

But I can control:
My asset allocation.
My risk management.
My preparation.
My response.
My emotions.

That shift changed my trajectory.

Because most people exhaust themselves fighting what they cannot influence.
They argue with the market.
They argue with volatility.
They argue with reality.
And reality always wins.

When I focused only on what I could control, something interesting happened:
Stress reduced.
Clarity improved.
Decisions became cleaner.
Results compounded.

The market may be irrational in the short term.
But discipline is always rational.
Letting go is not weakness.
It’s strategic maturity.
