Pantonium's project with the City of Belleville was recently awarded the Canadian Urban Transit Association award for innovation.  Pantonium's software allowed Belleville to increase ridership by 300%, service area by 70% and reduced mileage by 30% in only 6 weeks.

What if fixing Ontario’s civil litigation justice delays could be solved by adding $500 in fees to each civil litigation case? Would you support new fees to provide the funding needed for more judges to get cases moving faster?

Earlier this week, I attended the seminar on overhauling Ontario’s civil litigation rules. I understand the need for reform and appreciate the hard work of the Civil Rules Review Working Group. But, it feels to me that the Committee simply isn't being given the resources they need to solve the real problem. 

The government continues to refuse to provide the funding we need to hire the judges and staff needed by our system. We keep getting more rules, more procedures, more hurdles for litigants to jump through without addressing the root issue: How do we get more Judges?

I'm not generally one in favour of adding new taxes/fees, but the answer seems simple and drastically cheaper than the delays and costs incurred in the alternative.

New fees of $500 on each civil case could raise enough to hire 100 more Judges plus more support staff. These Judges could be dedicated to sit on civil matters only (based on 2024 new claim filing numbers).

Justice shouldn’t be a never-ending wait. If we want real reform, we need real resources.

What do you think? Is this an idea worth exploring? Fees could be split among the parties to spread the burden.

Based on 2024 case numbers $500 per case would be over $40,000,000 which would make a big difference. Faster hearings, less delays, more justice served.

We need to rethink how we sustain justice in Ontario. Because without enough Judges, reform remains just words on paper.
