In a technical product management role, I pioneered the use of semantic technology at Pearson, with a purpose of connecting data to provide organisational, content and customer insights. Created the strategy for linked data and formed a vision that spanned the key data that drives Pearson.

Parliamentary Digital Service

Created and led Parliament's first unified software engineering function, responsible for all bespoke development work across the House of Commons, House of Lords and the Parliamentary Digital Service.

Built a team that included development, testing, delivery, devops and user research disciplines and devised a vision and roadmap to deliver a number of key products and services across the organisation, these included:

* Supporting both Houses during the coronavirus pandemic by designing and delivering a secure remote voting solution that was available on any device to all Members. This enabled key legislation to be voted on at a time when Members were not able to attend Westminster. It significantly increased voting participation in the House of Lords.
* Replacing the entire parliament website from a single, heavily bespoked CMS into a number of data driven sites and a core CMS for managing content. Delivered these under a single brand by creating a design system that ensured consistency without restricting the ability to innovate. 
* As part of the website project, enabled voting and Hansard data to appear on the website much more quickly than was ever possible before, improving transparency and significantly increasing traffic.
* Internal applications that power the day to day running of Parliament across all business areas, including systems to power the operation Select Committees, Legislation and Hansard.

Director of Software Engineering

Led an experienced development team responsible for all applications that power the business of Parliament. In addition, built a number of public facing websites and apps, such as CommonsVotes, that improved transparency into the workings of democracy.

Designed and developed MemberHub, the one-stop shop for MPs to be able to table questions and motions, enabling them to be able to conduct key parts of their role from anywhere in the country.

Created the CommonsVotes app, enabling journalists and interested members of the public to find out how each MP voted in the Commons within approx 20 minutes of the division taking place. This was a huge improvement on the 3 hours or so it used to take and during the votes on Brexit was crucial to showing detail on how Members were voting. The app and its graphics were broadcast on the BBC on multiple occasions, and the API that powers the app was made publicly available and is used by all major broadcasters to power their websites and TV feeds.

Responsible for providing technical leadership as Head of Profession for Software Development at Parliament.

Key aspects of role include:

• Acting as scrum master for a variety of development teams.
• Software design and architecture.
• Development process engineering.
• Performance management, coaching and development of staff.

In addition to the above I have designed, managed and led teams on the following key projects:

• Commons Order Paper - Digitising the production of the House of Commons order of business.

• Members' Information System - Parliament's primary source of data on MPs and Peers.

• Hansard online - providing a "live" feed on current sitting of both houses.

• Committee written evidence online submission - giving members of the public the ability to submit evidence to parliamentary committees online for the first time.

• Members Post - a tool used by the Royal Mail to manage the flow and onward delivery of tens of thousands of items of post sent to MPs and Peers every day.

• Bespoke app development - Leading the team to deliver a number of HTML5 and native apps for a variety of business units as well as the general public.

•	Managed a team of multi skilled developers, some on-site, some off-site, on projects across business units and for 3rd party organisations.

•	Designed back-end services and worked on the development of an online transactional conveyancing system in collaboration with ThoughtWorks.

•	Designed a number of other systems including web based back office platform for a leading Scottish legal services provider and a conveyancing panel risk assessment platform for a major UK bank.

•	Implemented Scrum as principle working practice for the development, taught the process and mentored the team.

•	Drove the team into working with concepts such as TDD and Pair Programming.

•	Planned and implemented a CI development environment.

•	Developed user stories in collaboration with business owners and assisted in creating project plans to fit with the organisations overall PRINCE2 framework.

•	Responsible for ensuring project delivery to various business units.

•	Worked regularly with a variety of development tools including C#, VB.net, XML, ASP.net, and SQL Server.

•	Led and worked as a senior developer in several .net development teams on a wide variety of bespoke software projects for a diverse client set across the information services sector.

•	Software architect and lead developer on several projects including an e-marketing solution used to create professional, personalised and heavily branded emails, micro-sites and data collection forms along with a suite of analysis tools.

•	Met regularly with a range of staff from a diverse client base to ascertain their IT needs as well as to analyse and produce functional and technical designs and costing estimates for a wide range of projects.

•	Responsible for ensuring high quality output from team by driving internal coding standards.

•	Worked with Managing Director on roadmap for future development of products by the company.

•	Led and managed a team of developers working on a KM system using VB.NET and SQL Server 2000 in a web environment using both ASP.NET and XML/XSLT to serve pages inside an IIS application.

•	Designed a wide range of components and enhancements to the KM system.

•	Designed and implemented a migration from COM based system to the .net platform.

•	Devised development processes, standards and targets for development team.

•	Analysed functional requirements leading to creation of technical design specifications.

•	Produced software releases, and supporting documentation for QA department.

•	Worked with a wide variety of legal and accountancy clients to ascertain needs for future development of the product.

•	Coded enhancements and bug fixes to software written in a VB6/Oracle & VB6/SQL Server COM environment.

•	Wrote technical designs for enhancements based on client functional requirements.

•	Led a team of developers with responsibility for development and off-site technical support of a front office banking system for ABN-AMRO, Hungary.

•	Met with banking staff at all levels from senior management to tellers, in order to plan viability of their requirements, and to discuss and plan resolution to issues with the software.

•	Worked regularly on-site in Budapest to assess system performance and future requirements and produced beta code to resolve issues.

I started in technology around 25 years ago as a trainee developer in retail banking. Having the chance to learn on the job from some amazing engineers and architects was a golden opportunity. I travelled regularly to client sites across Europe, grew to lead a dedicated team of developers, and realised the fact I was able to do a job I loved! From this has come my very strong desire to create opportunities for other people from non traditional backgrounds to get into tech, it worked for me, I want to give that same chance to others.

Through my career I've led teams, designed solutions and partnered with business stakeholders to develop exceptional technology solutions across a variety of sectors including: public sector, retail banking, legal, accountancy and conveyancing. 

My public sector experience came at Parliament, where my remit grew to encompass the full product lifecycle for all products and services the organisation required to operate as the first Engineering Director that Parliament had ever had. Delivering the solutions to operate during COVID and being appointed OBE for doing so was a career high, and I suspect I'll never leave such a legacy again!

Having moved back to a significant private sector role at Gallagher I am now growing, supporting and developing my global team to deliver significant growth for our business, driving exciting and innovative new products and services that make real impact in the reinsurance market.

I'm an inclusive leader, with a coaching style and a strong belief in continuing personal development. Paired with a unwavering belief that diversity in teams is strength, I have shown time and again that strong, autonomous but well supported teams are the key to success in any project.
