In a technical product management role, I pioneered the use of semantic technology at Pearson, with a purpose of connecting data to provide organisational, content and customer insights. Created the strategy for linked data and formed a vision that spanned the key data that drives Pearson.

In need for a tool that would really help us deal with the inherent complexity and ambiguity in product development we started a co-creation process to build such a tool and eventually named it Product Field.

When we introduced it in 2015, we already knew it worked for us. In our contexts. That is why we created it in the first place. A tool to scratch our own itch. Over time, though, more and more teams and organisations started using it. It became a thing. Even across the Atlantic when we were invited by SXSW to launch our Product Field Reference Guide at the event in 2017. 

The Product Field has taught us so many things. Still does. It helps us understand the nature of innovation. Time and again. How new products emerge from the status quo. How we make things happen. The forces at play. The concepts and models we use to think and create. Together. Grouped around a whiteboard. Or asynchronously. Scattered across time zones. The Product Field is our haven of clarity. And coherence. The big picture view. Ever-evolving.

When we realised that our autonomous product teams performed way better than the ones with team members from different departments, we decided to abandon our matrix organisation and move to a PRODUCT OPERATING MODEL. That is, we split the company into three independent product units with their own dedicated product sales force (you build it, you run it, you sell it). In this new model, I ended up heading our SaaS product unit. My job was to grow our SaaS products in alignment with our company strategy.

At some point during my time as CTO, I realised that I was effectively filling the void of a missing product lead. The CEO agreed and I left my position as our tech lead to become news aktuell’s first head of product in 2009. My job was to re-think and re-organise the way we do product, and at the same time kick-off new product initiatives to develop a new growth area. Specifically, we adopted an agile delivery process and combined it with the concept of autonomous product teams led by entrapreneurial product managers.

In 1996, I joined news aktuell to build their first website which later became presseportal.de. While launching the site was rather easy, it took some effort to let it run smoothly while growing fast. We had to invest in a new tech stack and also make sure that everything we do helps the business. After a few years of growing traffic, revenue and tech complexity, the CEO offered me the CTO position. That felt a little weird at the time because my background is in linguistic sciences, not engineering. But he said, the role is not about engineering, it’s about communication and connecting tech to business. And he was right.

My consulting work is based on 30 years of experience in digital product development in various roles: as a product manager, executive, entrepreneur, consultant, facilitator and trainer.

In 2015, I developed the innovation framework "Product Field" together with two like-minded experts and published a book on the subject, which became a SXSW bestseller in 2019.
