Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry

Researching the spliceosome in the group of Prof. Dr. Reinhard Lührmann. The spliceosome is a complex molecular machine involved in determining which proteins are made by our cells. It trims and joins the RNA copy of a gene, so that it can serve as a blueprint for the manufacturing of the respective protein.

► My role in this field of research
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
For my PhD thesis, I developed an in vitro system to study the composition and the shape of this molecular machine at different stages of the splicing process in the fruit fly. By comparing the results of my experiments, to the research done with yeast and human cells, this work provided important insights into the evolutionary origin of these machines.

I also host private 1:1 retreats in the Forest of Dean - incorporating personal coaching, forest walks and mindfulness.  All services are LGBTQIA+ friendly - for individuals of any gender, sexuality or relationship orientation, and I also offer relationship coaching for monogamous couples / polyamorous polycules, parents and children, colleagues and teams, plus mediation for employer / employee negotiations.

The world is changing.  It always does.  Things are one way, and then they’re not.
Many complex issues have come to the table over the years - religion, race, sexuality...
And now it’s the turn of gender.

SO GENDER IDENTITY IS CHANGING
And it's dividing opinion.
As gender can seem ‘too complicated’ nowadays.
And I get it.  I understand.
 
BUT IT’S SIMPLY ANOTHER DIVERSITY ISSUE
We’ve debated religion, race and sexuality. And feminism has done much to level men and women,
But we must continue to revist old beliefs.
 
WHAT I KNOW ABOUT GENDER
As part of my own journey, I researched gender in depth - scientific data, historical facts, cultural differences, the natural world…
I was blown away, and compelled to share what I had learnt. 

So I wrote educational talks, and booked speaking slots… 

And turned rooms full of eye-rollers, into people who finally ‘got it’!

Researching Gender Diversity and Identity in depth, following the discovery of interesting facts about the non binary nature of our biology.  I wanted to get clear about the truth, and so spent spare time following threads of ideas...  uncovering studies and amazing facts about other cultures and the natural world.  Piecing everything together, I formulated a framework within which to conduct and present my research.  It follows a logical sequence, and takes people from awareness, via understanding, to acceptance.  I let the facts speak for themselves.

I worked in senior management positions for a number of successful local companies - challenging Gender Roles, in Engineering, IT and Medical.  With an emphasis on business development, I handled major international accounts, coordinated delivery of overseas exhibitions, as well as managing staff. and training teams. With line manager responsibility, and board level accountability, I became involved in aspects of Human Resources too, including Diversity, Equality and Inclusion.  With a specific focus on Gender Equality and Diversity within the business, tasked with producing anti harrasment and anti bullying policies.

Working for both Siemens and BT as a National Account Manager, I also oversaw Channel Development - recruiting, training, supporting and managing resellers. During my time working with BT (DMSL) I coordinated the entire launch for a brand new BT service and took on other marketing responsibilities.

As the only female in many of the teams I worked in, and one of the only female senior managers, there were some interesting Gender Biases to work with and overcome.  I also became involved in wider conversations around Diversity, Equality and Inclusion.

I was selected for a Graduate Management Training Scheme with Laing Homes.  Over 18 months I spent 3 months in each department, and also had secondments at three of six different regional offices in the South East.  It was an excellent grounding in business and once the training was over I chose a role in the commercial department. I was also involved in a special projects group about Gender in Construction - aimed at encouraging girls into traditionally male roles in the industry, like surveying.
