Years ago, I remember scrolling through LinkedIn and seeing people share their wins:

Turns out, the real power move wasn’t just building personal brands it was aligning them

I’ve built and executed personal brand strategies for dozens of leaders and companies.

I’d been overlooking something the whole time: Teamwork.

My wheels started spinning all because I took the call. 

I built the strategy for them, and within weeks, they told me: “Everybody is talking about our LinkedIn presence!” 

Here’s why it works:
1. Synchronized Messaging
Executives and their companies have different audiences
But they’re connected. Same company. Same industry. Similar networks.
When you have an event, product launch, or you are raising capital, the same message lands in more places, with more credibility, and in voices people want to hear.

2. Authentic Delivery
We never hand anyone a script.
Instead, we help them tell their story:
 → Why they care about the initiative
 → What they’ve learned

I've never understood why entrepreneurs ask for less than they deserve.

One simple shift drastically changed my business and how I operate.

I asked for what I wanted, not just what I thought I could get.

Here's how I got there:

I became more confident.

Confidence creates opportunities. Believing in the value of your expertise even before you have all the proof changes everything.

I got better at creating alignment.

The first time I sold on Upwork, I made $50. The first time I sold directly to a business, I made $5,000.

Moving from platforms to direct sales opens up better opportunities. No more price wars on Upwork - targeting small and medium businesses brings higher margins.

The market splits into three clear segments:
- Platform clients (quick but low-margin)
- SMBs (accessible decision-makers)
- Enterprise (complex, relationship-driven)

Each segment needs its own sales approach. Email marketing drives lead generation, supported by LinkedIn outreach and cold calling.

Success comes down to:

→ Tracking key metrics (contacts, responses, closes)
→ Growing your team strategically
→ Following up consistently
→ Finding ideal customers
→ Building targeted lists

Start with data collectors, add campaign managers, then expand. SMB sales cycles run 3-6 months, longer for bigger clients.

Technical skills alone won't get you there. You need strong business and sales expertise build it or partner up.

The market gets more competitive daily. What works now might not work next month.

Keep testing new approaches and learning from others.

The path forward?
Build your skills first.
Scale your earnings next.
Then invest in growth.

The single worst mistake you can make in a Cheif marketing officer interview?

Proving you've done the job before instead of showing you can do it for them now.

Most senior marketers approach these conversations completely wrong.

They spend their time talking about past achievements.

But that's not what matters.

What matters is demonstrating how you'll move their business forward today.

The shift most candidates miss is simple: they talk in past tense. "I built," "I led," "I scaled."

None of that moves their business forward today.

When I think about interviews at that level, I have 5 deal-breakers:

1. Partnership over politics: I ask how the CEO wants to be challenged. If they don't want to be challenged, I walk away. I'm not there to take orders. I'm there to build a partnership where tension creates better ideas, not fear.

2. Data and judgment, not dashboards: I ask how they define "data-driven." If the answer is charts without context, that's a red flag. The best marketing leaders know numbers only matter when they inform judgment. That's the skill that compounds.

3. Brand isn't fluff: I ask how brand shows up in board conversations. If it doesn't, marketing is already boxed in. You can't lead demand strategy when brand gets treated like design work.

4. Patience for compounding: I ask about their appetite for long-term marketing bets. Most companies say they want growth, but what they really want is relief. Relief from pressure. Relief from board expectations. Compounding only works when you stop chasing quick wins and start building enduring ones.

5. Shared accountability: I ask how marketing, sales, and finance align on goals. If I hear "We have weekly syncs," I push deeper. Alignment isn't meetings. It's shared math. If the math isn't shared, the incentives aren't either.

When you've been in this game long enough, interviews become less like a test and more like a mirror.

You're not trying to impress.

You're trying to understand what you'd be walking into.

Can you lead? Can you challenge? Can you build something that compounds?

Those are the questions that matter.

Everything else is just jargon on a resume.

Here’s something a lot of people don’t like to hear:

You can understand the algorithm.
You can post every day.
You can speak directly to your network.
And still not move the needle one inch in your business or your goals.

Because visibility alone isn’t enough.

After almost 1,000 of my LinkedIn posts and executing and advising on I don’t even know how many for others, I’ve seen this pattern over and over again.

Likes and comments from content don’t equal dollars in the bank.

They don’t equal a board seat.
They don’t equal a promotion.
They don’t equal top talent.
They don’t equal clients.
They don’t sell out events.

They create awareness.

Sometimes you get lucky and are in the right place at the right time for someone who’s ready.

But for the rest of the time, awareness does not equal what you want.

If you’re stuck there right now, here are a few questions worth asking:

1️⃣ Is my content only about me or chasing viral moments?
2️⃣ Do my tactics go beyond posting and commenting? 
3️⃣ Am I open to rethinking my strategy when results aren’t there, even if it looks like others are succeeding?
4️⃣ Am I overlooking the middle: the stage between awareness and my end goal, where opportunities grow?
5️⃣ Have I stopped to ask the very people I want to work with how they see it?

Awareness vs. Revenue
Visibility creates awareness.
Positioning + tactics (yes sales too) creates revenue.

One fills your notifications.
The other fills your pipeline.

So if you’re frustrated and not seeing results, don’t quit; pivot.

Come up with a new plan.
Be willing to make changes.

That’s how you go from “LinkedIn isn’t working.” to → “LinkedIn helped me with ____”

And that’s also the difference between those who stay stuck and leaders who grow. 🤍
