The children have been practising for weeks and I am truly proud of their progress. They have been so committed to rehearsals and eager to show up every time.

There is something powerful about the moment a child spots someone they love in the audience. They stand taller. They try harder. They feel seen. That simple moment can shift everything for them, which is why this evening means so much.

Helene's exceptional leadership has been recognised nationally, as she recently received the prestigious award for Inspirational Leader in the National Youth Work Awards.

Passionate about promoting anti-racism practices, Helene provides invaluable support to mainstream organisations, assisting them in adopting inclusive policies and fostering a culture of diversity. Her expertise extends to delivering impactful anti-racism training, equipping individuals and organisations with the tools needed to create inclusive environments.

Helene is also a Co-Founder of Women of Colour Scotland, a community-led organization that empowers women from diverse backgrounds to grow, build confidence, and make positive contributions in Scotland. Through this initiative, she has created a platform for women to connect, collaborate, and thrive.

In addition to her transformative work, Helene is actively involved in supporting employability within the Care sector through her project, Home Care Champions. Today I am very Sad, I feel a feeling I cant explain..Not for me but for my community, for many people that I Support. Do you want to know what systemic exploitation looks like?
Last week as part of  the Immigration Influencing Policy Group, I spoke about how employers are exploiting healthcare workers. Yesterday I saw the Home Secretary's "earned settlement" proposal proved my point but on a governmental scale.
The Home Office created a labor recruitment scheme disguised as immigration policy.
Here's what they did:
📍 2020-2024: Recruited healthcare workers with a promised 5-year pathway to settlement 
📍 2025: Proposes retroactively changing this to 15 years but mainly for lower-paid workers 
📍 Their message: "We need your labor, but we don't want you as permanent members of our society"
This will create a 15-year hostage situation where workers cannot: 
❌ Leave abusive employers (risks their entire future) 
❌ Report unsafe conditions (jeopardizes immigration status)
❌ Claim benefits during maternity leave (adds 5-10 years) 
❌ Demand fair wages (employers know they're trapped)
The Home Office is essentially saying: "We'll keep you in perpetual limbo for 15 years, during which you have no security, no real rights, and can be discarded if you become inconvenient."
This is state  sanctioned labor bondage:
Workers become captive to sponsors who control their future
Families face separation after 15 years if dependants don't qualify independently
The system creates the exact conditions Modern Slavery legislation was designed to prevent
They imported workers when convenient, now treat them as disposable when politically useful

We called them essential workers during the pandemic. We recruited them during our staffing crisis. Now we're engineering their exploitation.
This isn't immigration reform. This is organised oppression.

Immigration controls and modern visa systems are built on the same logics that shaped colonial labor practices: deciding who can move, who must carry papers, who is seen as a worker versus a person who can be exploited to serve empire.
History is repeating itself. Will we let it?
