The biggest career moves really do happen in rooms you’re not in.

I got a call: they wanted to make me a company officer and add me to the board.

I hadn’t lobbied.

That moment rewired how I saw my career.
I stopped believing it was just about being “good enough.”  

I started seeing how much rides on trust, reputation, and quiet advocacy.

they’re willing to spend their own credibility on you.

That’s what I mean by a Personal Board of Allies.
Not the people who “like” your updates,

So sit with this for a second:

We’re taught to obsess over the doors that don’t open.  

Almost no one teaches us how to evaluate the rooms behind them.

But when we really looked at the room that door led to, a different truth showed up.

So before you decide a no means you’re not enough, try this:
1.  What does this room really reward: compliance or courage, optics or outcomes?
2.  Who actually thrives there, and do you want that version of success?
3.  If this door swung open today, what part of you would have to go quiet to stay?

If the honest answers make you smaller, that “no” might not be rejection.  

It might be protection.

Sometimes the hardest seasons of your career become signals.

1.  Revisit your circle.  
Who challenges, supports, and believes in who you’re becoming—not just who you were?

2.  Release with gratitude.  
Some relationships don’t end in conflict. They end in completion. Honor them, then let go.

3.  Rebuild deliberately.  
Seek allies who see your next level clearly and speak your name in the right rooms.

Career success isn’t about holding on to everyone.  

It’s about holding on to the right ones for this chapter.

I used to wait until I felt ready to make career moves.

Spoiler: I never felt ready.
And I was wasting time.

Every meaningful shift in my career started while I was still figuring out what the hell I was doing.

Promotion to director? Terrified.
First C-suite meeting? Improvising.
Launching my practice? Still learning.

But over time I realized something no one tells you about readiness:
It doesn’t arrive before you move. It arrives because you moved.

That realization became my mantra.
All that waiting wasn’t strategic preparation.
It was fear dressed up as perfectionism.

I watched a VP cry in our coaching session last week.

Not because they failed.

Because they finally admitted they’d been pretending for 18 months.

“I’ve become a translator,” they said.

“I translate chaos from above into clarity below. I translate my team’s brilliance into language leadership will accept. I translate my own doubt into performative confidence.”

“But who translates for you?” I asked.

Silence.

Here’s the leadership paradox no one names:
The more senior you become, the more you’re rewarded for certainty.

But certainty isn’t a leadership skill.

It’s a performance requirement.

And the cost of that performance is you.

This VP hadn’t lost their edge.

They’d lost themselves in the gap between who they had to be and who they actually were.

Identity isn’t static in leadership.

It’s negotiated daily between your authentic capacity and organizational expectation.

Most leaders mistake that negotiation for growth.

But growth isn’t becoming who they need you to be.

It’s knowing when that distance becomes unsustainable.

Because the leaders who endure aren’t the best performers.

They’re the ones who know the difference between adaptation and erasure.

Most career advice assumes Mondays are about momentum.

Push harder. Do more. Stay on pace.

And somewhere between meetings, you’re supposed to feel motivated about another week chasing goals you didn’t consciously choose.

But high achievers know something deeper.

And staying busy is not the same as moving forward.

When I ask senior leaders, “How are you, really?” 

I’m hearing a new kind of answer.
Not “busy.”
Not even “burned out.”
More like:
“I’m carrying everything, and I can’t tell if I’m leading or just absorbing impact.”

On paper, they’re winning:
Record quarters. Bigger scope. More headcount.

But under the surface, there’s a quiet pattern:

• Calendars that look like a game of Tetris no one can win.

• Roles that keep expanding while actual authority barely moves.

• Careers that look impressive from the outside and strangely hollow from the inside.

What I’m seeing isn’t a confidence crisis.  
It’s a capacity and permission crisis.

Leaders are asking themselves:

• How do I hold the weight of this role without losing myself?

• How do I tell the truth about what’s not working without losing myself when I’ve been rewarded for holding it all together?

• How do I lead humans when I barely feel human in my own schedule?

If you’re in that space, here are three questions to sit with this weekend, not as homework, but as a bit of honesty with yourself:

1. Where am I confusing being indispensable with being effective?  
If the system only works when you overextend, the system is under-led, not well-led.

2. What am I saying “yes” to that current‑me can handle, but future‑me will resent?  
That’s where quiet burnout begins.

3. If I led like my wellbeing mattered as much as the numbers, what is the first boundary I’d put back in place?  

One meeting, one expectation, one channel.

Senior leaders don’t need more hype about resilience.  You need more permission to be honest about what your role is costing you, and more courage to renegotiate it.

The Strategic Stay: 3 questions for leaders who can't leave yet but refuse to keep losing themselves.

A SVP told me last month: "Everyone says just leave. But I have two kids in college, aging parents, and a mortgage. Leaving isn't an option right now."

Then I asked him a question that shifted his entire perspective:

"So how do you stay without disappearing?"

Silence.

Because most leadership advice assumes you have the luxury of walking away.
But some seasons require you to stay, and staying strategically is its own form of YourEdge™.

Here's the framework I use when leaving isn't viable but losing yourself isn't either:

1. What am I staying for vs. what am I staying to avoid?

Staying for your family's stability? Strategic.
Staying to avoid feeling like a quitter? That's fear running your life.

2. What boundaries would let me stay whole while I'm here?

Maybe it's: "I'll manage up, but I won't gaslight my team."
Or: "I'll deliver results, but I won't pretend this culture is functional."

Strategic staying isn't acceptance.
It's containment until you can move.

3. What's my 18-month exit plan that starts today?

Not "someday I'll update my resume."

What skills do you need? What financial runway? What network moves?

Passive staying becomes quicksand.
Strategic staying has a timeline.

Staying stops feeling like failure and becomes a conscious phase with an end date.

You're not stuck. You're strategic.

“If I’m this good, why does it still feel like I’m invisible here?”

I lived in that question for years.
So I did what we’re taught to do.
I stayed quiet.
I overdelivered.
I worked twice as hard for half the recognition.
And every month I whispered, “Next month they’ll see it.”

They didn’t.

The shift came when I stopped running a performance review on myself  
and started running a capacity review on the room.

“What if I’m not overlooked?  

What if I’ve outgrown the room?”

Uncomfortable.

And honest.

Some environments don’t forget your value.
They were never built with the range to register it.

Everything changed when I aligned with my Edge™, the part of me that refuses to keep shrinking to fit the ceiling.

My courage got louder than my compliance.
My openness replaced overthinking.
My curiosity walked me into conversations I used to wait to be invited to.
My empathy made it obvious who was invested in my growth, not just my reliability.

The more I honored that Edge™,
the faster I outgrew spaces that needed me small to feel big.

Invisibility isn’t a performance issue.
It’s an connection issue.
You don’t become seen by staying where you’re merely tolerated.

You become seen by choosing rooms calibrated to rise to meet you.

The results didn’t arrive and then I moved.

I moved, and that’s when the results finally landed somewhere worthy.

Choose smarter. Choose alignment.

I used to think loyalty to a dysfunctional leader was a leadership skill.

If they were unpredictable, I learned to read the room faster.

If they were volatile, I became the buffer for my team.

If they took credit, I told myself visibility would come later.

So I adapted.

Managed up harder.

Convinced myself I was learning resilience.

But over time I realized something no one tells you about toxic leadership:
Your ability to survive it isn’t proof you should stay in it.

That realization hit me like a gut punch and permission at the same time.

All that “managing up” wasn’t strategic.

It was self-abandonment.

The right leader doesn’t require you to shrink yourself to survive them.

They create space for you to grow into who you’re capable of becoming, even if it risks eclipsing them. 

If you’re constantly translating, buffering, or apologizing for your boss, you’re not managing up.

You’re managing your own erasure.

So here’s a question to sit with:
What if your next move isn’t about fixing this leader, but admitting you’ve already outgrown this dynamic?
