As an author, speaker, and educator, I have dedicated my career to creating resources that support, empower, and amplify Black women and their businesses. I have over 10 years of experience in writing, publishing, and e-learning, with a focus on social justice, diversity, and inclusion.

I recently published my first book, I'm Not Yelling: A Black Woman's Guide to Navigating the Workplace, which became a #1 bestseller in multiple categories and received rave reviews from readers and media outlets. The book offers strategic guidance on how Black businesswomen can overcome workplace discrimination and assert their rightful place in corporate America. 

I also launched the Black History & Culture Academy, an online platform that provides courses and workshops on Black history, culture, and identity. My advocacy in education earned me the recognition of being a LinkedIn Top Voice in Education in 2020.

In addition to writing, I have delivered keynote speeches and workshops on social justice, empathetic leadership, and women’s empowerment for organizations such as Yale University, Georgetown University, The National Museum of African American Music, and Junior League International.

My newest book is called Protecting My Peace: Embracing Inner Beauty & Ancestral Power.Through my writing and teaching, I aim to inspire Black women to reclaim their peace, protect their voice, and embrace their inner beauty and ancestral power. When I watch little Black boys hyping themselves up, I feel it in my chest. That joy. That fearlessness. That rhythm in his voice when he says, “I love myself… I love my skin… I love my hair… My melanin…” and means it.

And the part that gets me? His baby sister watching him like she’s taking mental notes. Because kids absorb everything. Not just what we say — how we say it, how often we say it, and whether we believe it, too.

But here’s the truth we don’t say out loud enough: our girls need this kind of affirmation early. Earlier than we think. The data is brutal:

Black girls start to lose confidence as young as age 5. By age 10, studies show they’re more likely than their peers to be labeled as “aggressive” or “older than they are,” even when their behavior is the same. 

Research from Georgetown Law found that adults view Black girls as less innocent and less in need of protection starting between ages 5–14. That gap impacts discipline, mental health, self-esteem… everything.

So I put affirmations in every single chapter of Slay All Day not because it sounded cute — but because our babies need armor they can carry in their mouths. Words they can grow into. Words that stick when the world tries to shrink them.

Every chapter ends with something they can say out loud. Something that reminds them:

There’s something powerful about watching a young Black girl talk about confidence in her own words. It’s the reason I wrote Slay All Day in the first place.

Black girls don’t just “need confidence.” They’re fighting for it every day in classrooms where they’re disciplined more harshly, labeled “aggressive” at younger ages, and pushed into stereotypes before they even hit middle school. 

According to the National Women's Law Center, Black girls are five times more likely to be suspended than white girls for the same behavior. 

The Georgetown Law Center on Poverty & Inequality found that adults see Black girls as “less innocent” as early as age 5. Five! 🤦🏽‍♀️

So when a little Black girl says she wants to love herself, speak up, and be a good friend? That’s not cute. That’s revolutionary. 🤩

In Slay All Day, I wrote whole chapters about this because I’ve lived it, taught through it, and watched too many girls shrink themselves just to make it through the day.

📕 Chapter One is all about knowing you were born to shine—before the world tries to dim the light.

I slid into this breakout session with Christy Rutherford ♦ Global Executive Advisor  at the 42nd National Coalition of Black Meeting Professionals Conference knowing it was going to be DOPE! 

And of course, she had the whole room hollering before she even got to slide two. 😂

Burned Out But Still Leading: How Black Professionals Can Reclaim Their Energy, Identity, and Power Without Quitting.

Whew. The title alone feels like a group chat moment.

Christy has this way of talking about burnout that makes you laugh, then immediately sit up a little straighter because she just read your whole life out loud. Folks were nodding, wiping their eyes, cracking up — all at once. 

It felt like one of those rooms where you can breathe a little deeper because everybody else gets it too.

Black professionals aren’t just tired. We’re carrying whole office ecosystems on our backs, still delivering, still showing up, still shining… even when our batteries are blinking red. 

And sessions like this? They remind us we don’t have to shrink, disappear, or walk away to reclaim ourselves. We just need tools, community, honesty, and someone like Christy willing to tell the truth with a grin.

Grateful to witness it. Grateful to learn. Grateful to be in rooms where we don’t have to pretend we’re fine just to make everyone else comfortable.

Dr. Amy is a Geriatrician and Director of Statewide Graduate Medical Education at the Virginia Health Workforce Development Authority (VHWDA), an organization that supports the health and wellness of Virginians through workforce policy, development, and innovation. She is a clinician with 15 years of experience caring for patients in healthcare systems in various countries. She also has 10 years of experience caring for older adults and their families across the continuum, with a specialty in Home Care Medicine.

She is passionate about wellness and health for family caregivers and the creation of health policies and educational programs to support them. She holds an MS in Health Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University, the third-rated program in the country, and a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification. She is also a producer and host of The Longest Goodbye Podcast, an international speaker, and a board member of the Central Virginia Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. She leverages her expertise in creative and innovative systems design, culture, and strategy creation, design thinking, coaching and mentoring, caregiver education and support, and data collection and analysis using the Salesforce platform to drive impact and innovation in her current role and beyond.

Have you ever been so super proud of someone???
I mean really, genuinely proud - brought to tears proud?
Well, this is me right now.

I am beyond proud and happy for my dear friend and source of inspiration, Manju Dawkins, MD. I met Manju at HlthUSA 2024, where she was preparing for her Thimble pitch. We were part of a group of physician attendees, organized by Nisha Mehta, MD who hosts the Physician Community group. 

My eyes caught Manju as she was dressed in the sparkling, vibrant and rich emerald green color that reminds me of the majestic Pitons on my home island of Saint Lucia. But despite this my heart said - 'This girl needs a hug'. And boy was I right. 
She was petrified and deeply uncertain of her task. 
Manju was set on this day to pitch Thimble, and well if you know me, I am as nosy as they come. So I asked for more information about Thimble. And with an open heart and a shine in her bright eyes - she quietly shared her big dream with me.

It turns out that in her hands, she had the exact product my family needed from 2019, when my daughter, diagnosed with a rare children's disease, was getting all the needles a hospital could give a child. 
 'You've got this', I said  but what I meant to say was 'You have got to do this. My child desperately needs your solution. And me, her anxious, overwhelmed and tired mother NEEDS your solution'. And all the other kids in and out of healthcare now - they need you and they need Thimble!' ---- but no pressure. I was honored to sit with her in her fear, but draw out the grit, persistence and relentlessness she has within.

And well, she pitched!
She walked out and shone as brightly as a founder can, when sharing their heartfelt solution.
It is the simplest and most elegant way to calm a child with needle fear. And it also comes with the cutest stickers. My kids love their patches! (especially the recovery patch)

Since then, I have been happy to watch Manju reach, and stretch, and grow. Yes, she is still scared, but she is doing the thing anyway.

This week she pitched Thimble at the NBA!! Yes - The NBA! All the way to the finals!! Yay!!
So so amazing!
