Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of meeting Bisola Tijani, Finance/Travel Content Creator in person for the first time.

We’d met virtually before, but there’s something different about sitting across from someone face-to-face and realizing, almost immediately, that you’re not alone in the messy parts of building.

I spent part of the morning sharing my journey on her podcast, and afterward we grabbed lunch and swapped stories about what people don’t always see. 

The growth pain, the frustrations, the constant figuring it out in real time, and also the vision that keeps you going. 

We talked about where we’ve been, what’s stretched us, and where we’re hoping to go next. 

It reminded me of something I think every founder needs to hear: sometimes the most productive thing you can do is talk to another founder who gets it.

Because we’re all riding the same roller coaster, the ups, the downs, and everything in between.

If you’re building right now, who’s the founder you can call this week just to be real for 20 minutes?

I was making $80K, but something didn’t add up.

It was 2023, and I was working remotely at a cybersecurity company. Great benefits, solid team but my instincts told me to check the data.

I looked into the HR system and compared notes with colleagues in the same role. 

The numbers were all over the place and it didn’t match what I was told during hiring.

I raised it with my manager. HR pointed me back around. No clear answers. Just circles.

Three months in, I stopped arguing for clarity and started looking elsewhere. I landed a HealthTech role with a $200K total package. Same skills. 

Different company. Very different valuation.

The lesson? If you’re underpaid and the system won’t fix it, find a place that will pay you what you’re worth.

If you answer this wrong in your first interview, you’re leaving money on the table.

It happens all the time. A recruiter asks: “What are your salary expectations?” and candidates panic. They throw out a number just to keep the conversation moving.

Here’s the mistake: the first number is rarely your leverage.

The better approach? Confirm the salary range first. If it’s not listed, ask directly: “What’s the current salary band for this role?”

Then pause. Don’t negotiate yet. Try saying: Thanks for confirming, my focus right now is ensuring this role is a strong fit. 

Once we’re aligned, I’m happy to finalize compensation based on my experience and the market."

Why it works: your real positioning happens as you move through the process and prove your value. By the time compensation is discussed, you’re already at the top of the band.

Negotiation isn’t just about asking for more, it’s about timing, strategy, and demonstrating value first.

There's a rejection email I've kept in my inbox for a while.

I don't keep it because I'm petty. I keep it because it taught me more than any acceptance ever did.

It was the moment that changed how I think about rejection entirely. I treated it like data. Not failure. Not proof that I wasn't good enough. Just information.

Here's what most people get wrong about rejection:

They think it's a verdict on their worth. But rejection isn't about whether you're good enough.

It's about whether you're the right fit, at the right time, for the right role. And when you start treating rejection as data instead of defeat, everything shifts.

You stop taking it personally, start asking better questions, refine your approach and keep moving.

The people who succeed in career transitions aren't the ones who never get rejected.

They're the ones who've learned how to metabolize rejection and keep going.

So if you're sitting on a rejection right now, whether it's from last week or last year, ask yourself:

💬  What information is this giving me?

💬 What can I learn from it?

💬 And what's my next move?

Because rejection isn't the end of the story.

It's just the part where you figure out what to do next.

“Is this the end of SDRs?” Should I even bother breaking into tech sales?

Here’s my take:

AI isn’t replacing salespeople. It’s exposing the ones who never learned how to sell. For years, a lot of sales teams rewarded activity that looked like selling, but wasn’t.

Mass outbound. Scripted calls. Meeting setting with no real understanding of the buyer. That isn’t selling. That’s processing.

And yes, AI can process. What AI still struggles with is the part that actually moves deals:

Reading what isn’t being said, then asking the right follow-up

Regaining control when a call goes off-script

Building trust with a skeptical buyer who’s been burned before

Navigating a buying committee where everyone has a different agenda

Making someone feel understood enough to move forward

That’s selling. And that’s what the market will keep paying for.

This is also why AI is good news for career pivoters.

If you’re coming from accounting, customer service, government, consulting, or anything relationship-heavy, you’ve been training the “human” side of sales your whole career:

1️⃣ You know how to manage stakeholders.

2️⃣ You know how to handle objections without getting defensive.

3️⃣ You know how to translate complexity for different audiences.

While some people are scrambling because their job was built on volume, you’re walking in with an unfair advantage.

So no, AI won’t replace salespeople. But it will separate order-takers from relationship-builders. And if you’ve spent your career building relationships, solving problems, and advocating for people, you’re exactly who sales teams will still need.

Question: what part of sales do you think AI will never be able to replace?

Over the past few weeks, one of the ways I’ve been decompressing after my day is… knitting.

I learned because this winter in Canada has been long and I’m usually the kind of person who resets outside:

Hiking. Running. Fresh air.

But when it’s freezing and dark at 4pm, that plan falls apart fast. So I needed something that forced me to fully unplug.

Knitting became that thing. Not immediately though.

When I took my first class, I was honestly so frustrated.

My hands felt clumsy, nothing looked right, i kept dropping stitches. It wasn’t relaxing. It was a struggle.

But then… something shifted.

With practice, it went from stressful to meditative.

A quiet rhythm. A little progress I could actually see. No screens. No noise. Just focus.

So I’m curious:

If you’re in Canada (or anywhere dealing with a long winter)…

how are you unplugging when it’s cold outside?

Drop your go-to reset. I need new ideas.

Your sales manager can make or break your career.

I’ve worked across 5+ tech companies, and one thing is clear: strong reps fail not because they lack skill, but because they chose the wrong manager.

That’s why I don’t just interview the company. I interview the sales manager.
Here are three questions I always ask: 

✨  “How many reps on your team are currently hitting quota?” → Success should be normal, not rare. 

✨ “When was the last time someone on your team got promoted?” → No promotions usually signals limited growth. 

✨  “How would your team describe your management style?” → Great managers can answer this instantly.

Why it matters: your manager controls your ramp, coaching, and long-term growth.

Ask better questions now so you don’t pay for it later.

Mass applying isn’t the problem.

Mass applying without leverage is.

In a competitive market, sending out more applications can still be the right move, but only if you’re doing it with two things in place: an industry proof resume that reliably earns interviews, and a relationship strategy that gets you out of the ATS lottery.

Because here’s the uncomfortable truth. When hundreds of qualified people are applying to the same role, your application alone isn’t a differentiator, even if you’re strong. It’s just a ticket into a system designed to filter aggressively.

That’s why I tell my people to run a two lane strategy.

🎯 The first lane is distribution. Once your resume reads like you’ve already done the job, you can apply at volume inside a clear lane and treat responses like data, not validation. If the resume converts, volume shortens timelines. If it doesn’t, volume just multiplies silence.

🎯 The second lane is relationships, because relationships create bypasses. While everyone else is waiting for the algorithm, you’re getting context, clarity, and internal pull. You’re learning what the team actually cares about, you’re getting your name attached to the role by someone who matters, and you’re turning “random applicant” into “someone we should talk to.”

When you combine the two, you stop relying on luck. You build a pipeline where applications create surface area, and relationships create lift.

So yes, apply strategically at volume, but don’t confuse volume with control. 

Control comes from pairing it with conversations at the companies you’re targeting, because in this market, the fastest path isn’t choosing between applying and networking. It’s doing both in a way that compounds.
