Tehran’s four key reservoirs—Latyan, Lar, Mamloo, and Karaj—are now below 10% capacity, putting the city of over 10 million on the brink of a water crisis.

Egypt is investing over $5 billion in the New Delta Project, the world's largest desert reclamation effort. 

This massive project involves creating an artificial river that channels water from Lake Nasser through hundreds of kilometers of canals and pumping stations into the Western Desert. 

The goal is to transform over 2 million acres of barren desert into fertile farmland, easing pressure on the Nile and enhancing Egypt's water and food security for its growing population.

A chain of limestone shoals known as Rama Setu or Adam's Bridge spans nearly 18 miles (30 kilometers) across the narrow strait separating India and Sri Lanka. 

This natural formation, which lies just below sea level, connects India's Rameswaram Island to Sri Lanka's Mannar Island. 

Here, it appears as shifting ribbons of sand and sediment, shaped by constant tides and currents. It's believed to have formed over millennia through a combination of coral growth and sediment accumulation.

The Jackie Kennedy Onassis Reservoir, located in the heart of NYC's Central Park, was a crucial part of the city's Aqueduct system, completed in 1862.  

Covering 106 acres with a capacity of over a billion gallons, it supplied New York City with drinking water for over a century.  

💧Decommissioned in 1993, it now serves as a major recreational spot.  
💧A 1.58-mile running trail encircles the reservoir, offering panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline and Belvedere Castle.
💧Originally known as the "Central Park Reservoir," it was renamed in 1994 to honor Jackie Onassis. 
💧The "Bridge: The structure across the water is actually a gatehouse that once controlled water flow, not a pedestrian bridge.

A brutal drought and extreme heat wave in Brazil turned Lake Tefe in the Amazona into a steaming cauldron. 

When dolphins started washing up dead, hydrologist Ayan Fleischmann was sent to investigate. 

He and his colleagues made a startling discovery: the lake's water had reached 41°C (105.8°F), a temperature hotter than most spa baths.

The research team visited 10 central Amazonian lakes, finding that five experienced exceptionally high daytime water temperatures exceeding 37 degrees Celsius. 

The most extreme reading came from Lake Tefe, which saw its surface area shrink by about 75%.

A significant trend is emerging at the intersection of energy and water security: Arab nations are increasingly looking to nuclear power for large-scale desalination.

Driven by severe water scarcity, and the price volatility of traditional #energy sources, countries like Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait are assessing nuclear technology—specifically the potential of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)—as a long-term, clean, and highly efficient solution.

This shift represents a critical infrastructure pivot. As highlighted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), nuclear power is moving from an overlooked resource to a core component of sustainable water management. The Maui Water Department is in the earliest stages of developing its first publicly-owned desalination plant for West Maui. 

This initiative comes in response to a significant shortfall in water supply — peak demand currently outpaces reliable delivery capacity by nearly 42 %.  

Key highlights:
💧 The facility would help support new housing developments (including a 500-home project) and bolster recovery efforts after the August 2023 wildfires.  
💧The work builds on a feasibility study undertaken by Brown and Caldwell that evaluated brackish- and salt-water options for both West and South Maui.  
💧Capital cost estimates for the plant range from $119 M (for ~2 mgd brackish treatment) to $328 M (for ~4 mgd salt-water treatment).

Wave-Powered Desalination Technology Arrives in Fort Bragg

Oneka Technologies announced a special event in Fort Bragg, California, to showcase its wave-powered desalination unit on land. 

This display is part of a 12-month pilot project in collaboration with the City of Fort Bragg.

This initiative aims to test and assess the performance and sustainability of the 100% renewable desalination solution in California's highly energetic waves. 

The technology is designed to produce freshwater with zero gas emissions and minimal impact on marine ecosystems.
