With global freshwater demand rising, FLOCEAN ’s innovative underwater desalination plant offers a new approach, with less energy and minimal impact on marine life. 

Flocean, a Norwegian engineering company, will launch the world's first commercial-scale subsea desalination plant in 2026, a breakthrough that could change how the world accesses freshwater.

The facility, named Flocean One, will initially produce 1,000 cubic metres (263,000 gallons per day) of potable water daily. 

It uses reverse osmosis pods placed hundreds of metres below the ocean surface. At such depths, the weight of the water itself pushes seawater through membranes, dramatically cutting the energy needed compared with conventional land-based plants.

New York City is investing millions into "Bluebelts"—man-made wetlands, ponds, and streams—to manage increasingly severe flooding caused by "cloudburst" rainfall events.

Nature-Based Infrastructure: Unlike traditional "gray" infrastructure (concrete pipes and sewers), Bluebelts are ecologically designed systems that use wetlands to slow down, store, and filter stormwater.

Rainwater is diverted from streets into these wetlands. Native plants filter out pollutants (like lawn fertilizers and debris), and the water is then slowly released into the ocean or local waterways, preventing the city's sewer systems from becoming overwhelmed.

Greece Declares Water Emergency as Nationwide Supply Measures Accelerate

Greece is confronting a growing strain on its water network as several parts of the country now operate under formal emergency status. 

Authorities have already issued declarations for Attica, Leros, and Patmos. 

The expanding list reflects concerns about declining reserves and increasingly erratic weather patterns affecting regional supply. 

Water officials are preparing additional wells that could contribute roughly forty-five million cubic meters of groundwater to the national grid annually.

💧Aquifers are nature's underground water storage system. Think of them as Earth's water savings account—we can deposit treated water here for future use!

💧In places where these underground spaces have been overdrawn, purified recycled water is used to replenish them through a process called indirect potable reuse (IPR).
