If I was a CMO targeting enterprise companies (5,000+ employees) - I would avoid these 3 fatal ad account mistakes:

1. Making the audience is too small for the algorithm to help.

A typical enterprise ABM list might only include 10,000 companies in the world.

Then you layer in specific roles like VP, C-suite, or IT leaders and your reachable audience shrinks even more.

In that world, broad targeting and traditional optimization tactics break down fast.

The fix? Upload ABM lists and run ads in tandem with sales.

No algorithm. Just precision.


2. Thinking that ABM is just for ads.

Account-Based Marketing means working from the same target list, cadence, and feedback loop as your sales team.

But most ad teams run ABM like it’s an awareness play.

No direct signals. No coordination.

When ABM is done right, marketing is riding shotgun to sales, amplifying signals, not guessing what to say.


3. Over-engineering personalization before they’re ready.

Yes, 1:1 ads with a company’s name in the creative can stop the scroll.

But only if you’ve got the team, infrastructure, and intent data to back it up.

If not, you end up with fragmented campaigns, minimal learnings, and zero scale.

Most brands should start with singular vertical-based targeting:

- One campaign for finance companies
- One for food and beverage
- One for healthcare

Verticalized, not atomized.
