Fresh out of school, I landed a dream role: Chrysler’s high-potential design program. By day, I was designing cars; by night, earning my Master’s degree. I thought I was set to change the industry.

But reality slapped me hard.

I was hired for my “out-of-the-box” thinking yet every time I challenged the status quo, the message was loud and clear: Get back in the box.

The leaders above me? Brilliant engineers but not great leaders. They knew torque and tensile strength, but not how to build people. Their focus: creating the perfect specs. Their blind spot: empowering talent.

The breaking point came in 2005. Our team had one goal: match Toyota’s quality numbers. I asked what I thought was the obvious question: “Why aren’t we aiming to beat them?”

My boss gave me a glare and shook his head: “Christine, you’re so idealistic.”

Translation: Know your place.

That was the day I realized—if I wanted to build a career around unlocking human potential instead of suppressing it—I’d have to step out of that box entirely.

A few months later, I left. First, to join a boutique consulting firm where I finally got to do the work I loved improving process while helping grow people and supporting best bosses. 

Then, in 2008, to launch Leader In Motion™ with a single mission: build a diverse bench of leaders ready to step up, every time it matters.

Recently, I was invited to speak at the Toronto Leo Women's Leadership Conference. And after a long week included delayed flights and poor sleep, I quickly realized within the first 20 minutes of the event that this was by far the most poorly organized event I had attended in my career. I was angry. I started calculating the time and effort I had invested. Yes, my blood was boiling. Thankfully, after a few minutes of letting my mind run, I decided I needed to shift my mindset. I asked myself: "If I am supposed to be at this event at this exact moment, can I get curious as to why?"

I grabbed a coffee and sat at an empty table. Another speaker sat down next to me and we started to chat. And then another. And within a few hours, I realized I was indeed supposed to be there! It was to meet some really remarkable women. 

That day I had the privilege of connecting with powerhouse speakers like Vivian Meraki , Maria Di Giulio , Dr. Chi Quita Mack, LMSW, Glenda Kroll, Pamela de la Flor and many more. Each one bringing her own depth of insight, strength, and charisma to the room.

Despite the technology and time management chaos, we made the most of it. We swapped stories, ideas, and laughter between the hiccups. It was a reminder that when things don’t go as planned, sometimes the real magic happens in the side conversations and shared eye-rolls that turn into genuine connection.

I also had the chance to share some thoughts from my keynote, Too Busy to Be Happy: Growing Your Work-Life Wisdom...which felt perfectly fitting, considering the situation. 😉

To all the brilliant women who showed up, rolled with it, and kept the energy high, thank you. You were the true highlight of an otherwise “educational” experience.

Last week, I had the honour of leading a session on Work-Life Wisdom with an incredible group of women from OMERS.

But the highlight of my day was sharing the same stage with Diana Matheson, a former Olympic soccer player and now the co-founder of Project 8 Sports, the company launching Canada’s first professional women’s soccer league.

Hearing Diana’s perspective on nervousness was game-changing.

She explained that when she felt nervous before a match, it wasn’t a sign she wasn’t ready, it was her body’s way of saying, “This game matters, and you’re prepared.”

She went on to share that her key to success lies in knowing that identity drives actions, which in turn drives feelings. 

Yet most of us have it the other way around where our feelings drive our (re)actions, which ultimately shape our identity.

I found myself reflecting on moments when I’ve let my feelings get ahead of my identity. 

This idea has stuck with me, and I’ll be thinking about it as I plan for a powerful 2026.
