I believe this gap between analytics and business outcomes is a problem, but the good news is that we can overcome it.  

I’m on a mission to share my knowledge of how to translate between analytics and business outcomes to help people communicate effectively across their organisation and to deliver better outcomes.

My experience of delivering business outcomes;  

📈 Leadership of a project team to change a quarterly process into a weekly process mitigating £20 million of risk at a large organisation.  

📈 Delivered a daily process that gave all the information required to deliver my daily objectives in half an hour a day and mitigated £millions of risk.  

📈 Developed analytical and management tools to improve workflow and communication across a whole business.  

📈 Coached a team to improve their analytical and technical skills to adapt to solve business problems.  

📈 Utilised automation and dashboards to deliver insight and analytics to enable leaders to make better decisions.  

📈 Developed and delivered governance processes to ensure robust and repeatable analytics.

Tristan in Summary:
Tristan is Kite Packaging's Data and Analytics Manager and has over 10 years experience of working in data-related roles. Tristan started out in energy forecasting before moving on to roles within construction, pharmaceuticals, and now packaging. Tristan focuses on ensuring that we use data effectively for business benefit without getting too distracted by shiny new technologies.
In Tristan’s spare time, he can often be found walking, doing DIY in his newly built man cave, or playing cricket.

Data and Analytics Manager

Developing Kite Packaging's Data and Analytics function and growing the capability of the team to deliver strong business outcomes.

Deskilling. Something AI will enable for a lot of jobs.
The argument that we won't need to code, edit videos, draw images because AI will do it is valid. But what skills will we still need to learn ourselves?

If we can get machines to do everything, what do we do when the machine breaks?

If your driverless car works 99% of the time, will you still have the skill to cope with the 1% of the time it needs you to take control?
Those 1% situations likely being the trickiest to deal with.

Will people in junior roles be able to go through the deep learning process to develop true understanding of something, or will they just have interacted at a surface level with an interface that gives them all the answers?

But which skills will still be valuable and which can we lose?
We don't need to know how to wash clothes by hand anymore.
We don't need to develop perfect handwriting (thankfully).

Some skills like map reading are still useful for the occasions when your phone doesn't work or have battery.

Judging which skills we still need, and ensuring enough people are trained in them, will be one of the continuing challenges as we can get answers more easily.

We make about 35,000 decisions in a typical day.
How many of those decisions do you get data for?

Not many.
Most of them you make with very little thought.
Others you put a bit more thought into.
And a few you may get extra data for.

How many of those decisions make a big impact on your life?
A few, but again not many.

If you were to get data for every decision in your life you would never make any decisions.

The skill then comes in not getting as much data as possible, but in knowing the right amount of data needed to optimise each decision.

Consider the impact of the decision and whether it is reversible before gathering every bit of data possible to help you make a decision.
