One of the traditions I hold dear on Thanksgiving is going for a walk with my wife (even if it’s freezing cold), just to chat about the good things from the past year.

This year, there’s been plenty on the business front: speaking at events, sold-out Podcast Profits Accelerator Programs, the growth of our 7-Figure Leap community, and the remarkable wave of leads that came from my interview on the Nathan Barry Show.

Almost all of them started the same way: somebody willing to trust me to serve their audience.

I’m incredibly thankful for:

I made $50,000 from my very first group coaching program…

That's the sexy headline, but it was actually an UGLY process that sent me to the doctor.

Let me explain.

The reality is I had done 1-on-1 coaching with good success for over a year.  I saw others running groups, and it seemed like the logical next step.

So in April 2022, I decided to go all-in that approach - and spent $25K with a guru running a "mastermind" that taught me very little.

After initially declaring I'd have a group start in June, I only had one person sign up.

[That's when the stress of debt and failing to launch led to my face going numb during our summer vacation...despite the funny t-shirt.]

After a trip to the doctor, I sought real help for my business, took stock of what I had in my toolbox, and created a simple plan centered around launching my group program with a signature framework by leveraging relationships.

I still didn't have most of what you'd expect:

No email list.
No website.
No ads.

Just a clear message and a simple strategy.

And it worked - in September 2022, the Podcast Profits Accelerator was born (under a different name and after two embarrassing false starts) and generated over $50K in revenue for my yet unnamed business.

Since then, I’ve launched 18 straight sold-out cohorts and generated over $2.5M in group coaching revenue - while helping dozens of coaches and consultants do the same.

We ask every member of our Podcast Profits Accelerator the same question during the kick-off call:

“How did you find Dustin?”

It might sound egotistical. But it’s not for my CRM. It’s living proof of the different relationship seeds that I’ve planted over time, and the power of that philosophy.

We’ve done this several hundred times, with several hundred people, in 18 different groups, and the same themes always emerge.

For me, it’s like getting a Christmas gift, ten times a year, and unpacking it for other people.

I get direct feedback and insights, and my cohort gets to see how seeds are planted, how it works and how they can replicate it. It’s really instructive for them to embrace it as something they should be doing more in their own business.

Of course, this is only day 1 of the 90-day intensive training we’re starting together.

However, it’s always important to be reminded how a small seed transforms into a wicked web of relationships that creates great results for your business.

Here’s my reflection on the relationships seeds planted with everyone in the October cohort of our Podcast Profits Accelerator which kicked off a couple weeks ago.

Are you in burnout? Or are you just ready to grow? Here’s how I tell the difference.

Internal discomfort is a good sign that you’re at an inflection point in your business.

When this happened to me, I was doing the thing I’d been trying to do for over a year, and felt blessed and grateful for it. I was coaching folks 1:1 to leverage podcast guesting to add profit to their business.

It was working well, but I found myself a bit uncomfortable internally. A little bit creatively bored.

This usually turns into shiny object syndrome, where I start thinking about new offers and new businesses I could be a part of.

I don’t know if it’s God’s providence or a result of sitting in the same place for so long, but here’s what I’ve found:

When I start asking questions, or getting creatively bored, someone shows up. We’re having a conversation, or I’m helping them, and the mirror gets held up — I realize I needed to hear that specific piece of advice myself.

For me, that advice was to branch out from 1:1 coaching into a cohort-based offer. It ended up being a 10X inflection point in my life and in my business. Since then, I’ve sold out 18 consecutive cohorts and earned over $2.5M in revenue with group coaching.

If you’ve been thinking about packaging your expertise into a group coaching offer, this could be your inflection point. And I’d love to be your guide.

There are two mistakes I see people make over & over when it comes to podcast guesting.

They don’t have a PLAN for which podcasts to pitch, and they don’t think about the ‘Content Gap’.

It all starts with identifying your ideal client, where you’re trying to meet them, and their journey so far.

If you don’t know that, you’ll end up with:

→ Missed Networking Opportunities
→ A Misaligned Audience
→ Poor Performance

Here’s what I’d do if I were starting over today:

Identify the FIRST target audience. Once you’ve nailed that down, write 3 topics and stories you want to share with them.

Identify Content Gaps, the sweet spot for podcast guesting that adds profit. 
Find podcasts where the host is missing a topic their audience would enjoy, and you would excel speaking about. Look for hosts/shows with the same target audience as your business, but different offerings. Here’s an example:

Imagine you're a marriage coach who solves communication problems for couples. Your first thought is probably to target all the top marriage podcasts.

But there’s a problem.

Those are all hosted by other marriage coaches who are trying to fix communication problems. There’s no Content Gap.

You and the host essentially play the same role on the show, so it’s not gonna work.

On the flip side, when the Content Gap is too big, you’ll never have resonance.

So we’re trying to find the sweet spot, some overlap between what you do and what the podcast’s audience expects.

For example: you could be the featured marriage coach on personal finance podcasts - financial stress & communication challenges in relationships are closely linked.

Then, create an objective scoring system to evaluate a podcast opportunity. Assign a rating to each metric and create a “Strength Of Lead” Score so you’re always making data-driven decisions and prioritizing the most promising opportunities.

(Bonus) Use tools like Listen Notes and Apple Podcasts to conduct thorough research on potential podcasts. Check out the show's content, audience size, and category rankings.

I can’t tell you how many times an Entrepreneur has told me this.

Then I ask: “Well, what was the PURPOSE of your appearance? And what transformation did you help the listener have?”

Most struggle to answer because they never asked themselves:

“What result do I provide to my target audience?”

Every great marketing strategy starts with that question. Podcast guesting is no different.

When you skip over this step, you’ll:

→ Struggle to measure success
Are you appearing on shows just to hear yourself talk? For vanity metrics, like views or downloads? Or do you actually want leads?

→ Make misaligned podcast choices
It's like trying to sell ice to Eskimos – you're in the wrong place, talking to the wrong people.

→ Produce no listener transformation
The lack of a clear purpose, goal and defined audience makes it difficult for you to convert podcast listeners into action-takers.

I’ve workshopped hundreds of transformations with members of 7-Figure Leap. These are the most common pitfalls:

→ They don’t pick their FIRST target audience
And get stuck trying to talk to everyone.

→ They don’t focus on how their target audience feels
And so they don’t create resonance or connection

→ They are not tangible and specific in their communication
And the audience does not take action.

Believe it or not, I take a security blanket with me to every single podcast interview I do.

I call it a Magic Post-It.

Each one includes:

→ The host’s name
Super awkward if I forget this!

→ 3x credibility highlights
These make people trust us. I focus on facts, examples & case studies here.
Credibility highlights prepare the audience to believe in us, and make our Call To Action at the end more effective.

→ 3x mini stories
I always try and sprinkle these in throughout the chat.
If I’m drawing a blank, or there’s an awkward pause, I can go back to these mini stories.

→ Show specifics
Here I write down any specific details I’ll need for the show.
e.g. if there’s a Lightning Round or final question, I always make sure I’ve got a response ready.

→ My Call To Action
A clear, concise Call To Action is what turns an interview appearance into profit.
Whether it’s a lead magnet, a discount code or something else, there’s nothing worse than going blank on this. I write it down so I can’t forget it.

When I'm done with the interview, I crumple up my Magic Post-It. I make a new one for each show. That way I’m always fresh, prepared, and in the moment, ready to perform with confidence.

My Journey 
When I was 23 I decided to buy a Taco Del Mar restaurant... I knew I had made a huge mistake at 2pm the first day when only 3 customers had walked in... (and two of them were my parents haha) 
For 5 years I worked hard to grow sales every way I could think of and in the end, tripled our revenue which still didn't seem to matter on the profit side. (I lost a lot of money 💰)

The one thing that I seemed to be the best at in the restaurant endeavor was marketing and getting people in the door. 

Fast forward to 2014 when my wonderful wife Carmen (definitely my better half) started a modest baby clothing line and was selling at craft markets.

Since then we have acquired multiple DTC brands and have built an agency (upGrowth Commerce) to service our brands as well as others who are in a similar situation to us!

In 2019 we started the podcast "secrets to scaling your e-commerce brand" which is now in the top 50 business/marketing podcasts in multiple countries including Canada and the United States.

That moment hit hard!!!

Because here’s what a lot of brands are doing right now:

They take their main hero SKU
Sell it full price everywhere else

Then make it stupid cheap on TikTok Shop “just to get sales” + get momentum

And then they’re shocked when

Amazon flatlines

TOTAL MER blows up

Retail partners start asking questions
TikTok didn’t break your unit economics.

You did!!

The way I think about TikTok Shop:

It’s the only channel that will pay you (even breakeven) to give you insane impressions.
If you even make $1 profit there

And you’re getting a $30 CPM worth of awareness for free
You’re winning.

The problem...

Most brands aren’t tracking the halo.
So they see “low-margin TikTok orders”

Instead of “cheap reach that lifts Amazon / Shopify / retail”.

If I were rebuilding your TikTok Shop strategy from scratch, I’d do 3 things:

1️⃣ Protect the hero
 
No more “fire sale” pricing on the SKU that drives your brand.
 Use:

 – Smaller bundles
 – Trial sizes
 – TikTok-only variants
 
And keep price architecture consistent across channels.

2️⃣ Define your blended model
 
Decide up front:
 – What MER are you happy with including TikTok
 – How you’ll measure halo (Amazon, Shopify, retail lift)
 – What CPM you’re effectively getting from organic + creator content

If TikTok is breakeven but blended MER is up and CPMs are down… keep going.

3️⃣ Make TikTok the awareness engine, not the profit center (at first) 
 
Creators get you reach.
 
Reach fills retargeting pools on Meta, Google, Amazon, retail.
 
Your job is to:

 – Seed a ton of creators
 – Let TikTok Shop break even
 – Harvest the profit off-platform

TikTok Shop doesn’t have to be “super profitable”. (at first)

It has to be super scalable.

Curious where you’re at...
 Are you still discounting your main hero SKU heavily on TikTok Shop? 

Or have you already pulled that back?

Are you a victim?
Do you not have a growth mindset?
Can you not take criticism?
Do you have a fragile Ego?

If you are thinking to yourself, oh man, I have these people in my organization… do everything in your power to first coach and correct, but most likely you need to remove them.

How we train fast

Who’s base knowledge makes them a good fit etc. 

And I will tell you what I know. 

99% of people don’t get it. 

They haven’t had the paradigm shift yet. 

It’s a new muscle 

It’s a new way of thinking. 

Working with creators is HARD! 

They don’t perform like ads do 😆

But this role is really big in terms of impact and responsibility 

Seems like more brands are catching on. 

But tbh I still feel like guy in 2014 telling their friends to invest as much as they can into Facebook ads and they laugh at me 🤷‍♂️🫤 when it comes to how big social commerce really is going to be!

Here’s how I look at this…

At Social Commerce Club we… 

1. take the highest performing tiktok shop content

2. Offer a percentage of ad spend (capped) to the creator to use their content on Meta 

3. Print brands cash with these ads omnichannel 

This is the 2025 playbook imo

Yesterday I was driving with my son who’s 6… 

We saw a bunch of billboards and he was asking about the messages on each

It reminded me of the classic Tim Ferris question… so I decided to ask him

“If you could put one message on a Billboard, what would it be?” 

He took about 3 seconds and said 

“My message would be “I love you””

This kid gets it ❤️
