Last week, I spoke to a Founder running a $700K coaching business. And he’s exhausted.

Everything looks good on the surface. 

Revenue is growing quickly, but he's managing a team of 25 coaches.

But as revenue goes up, so does acquisition cost (and so does stress). 

So this Founder:

→ Relies heavily on cold traffic
→ Needs to 'push to close' prospects on calls
→ Uses paid ads to top up the 'funnel', eating into margins

Even with great top line numbers, below the surface, he's super stressed out, because conversion takes a lot of work, time and resources (meaning profit margin is very low).

For me, it's not about how much I make, but how much I get to keep.

Picture this… you give your 30-year-old daughter $120k for a house down payment.

Not because she’s spoiled. 

She’s married, has 2 kids, they give 10%, they save as much as they can and work hard.

Her $60k saved would’ve been a solid 20% down in 2018? 

Today it barely covers 5% down and closing costs on a decent home near you.

The math: $600k house = $120k for 20% down + ~$25k for closing/ moving costs.

Her parents had two choices: 

1. Watch her pay $4,800/month w/ PMI, tiny down payment, no emergency fund while in peak yrs of raising family.

But, gift her $300k when she’s 60.

OR ‼️

 2. Help now instead w/ $120k. 

Results: 

$3800 monthly payment. No PMI. Extra $35k in the bank and $85k in home equity. 

Some legacy needs to be “sped up” for a couple decades.

That’s when it’s most impactful

Generational wealth does NOT have to cost Millions of dollars. 

It DOES have to be radically intentional.

It’s been 2,594 days since I started my business.

Here’s what it did to my life:

1: Had cancer twice
2: Wanted to quit exactly 100 times
3: Rejected by 1000’s of times
4: Survived months with $0 pay
5: Got called a “dirty grifter”

Yet I’d say it was 100% worth it.
Seriously, entrepreneurship is brutal.

But I also got married and had 2 kids
Invited Jesus into every client meeting
Created unlimited growth potential
Built a team of (soon to be) 6!
Built a practice on my terms

Praise you Jesus!

Then I had this moment recently…

Got a recruiter email offering a big 6-figure salary (full benefits, stability…the works)

For a second, I thought “WOW!! That’s really good money!!”

Then I re-ran our recurring revenue and saw its already more than that.

And it clicked differently then before.

The best investment I ever made was betting on myself and fighting through 7 yrs of difficulty when everyone else thought I was crazy.

Your kids will remember you missed their games.
They won’t remember the deal you closed.

Too many pray for God to bless their business.
Then work 70 hrs and miss their daughter’s childhood.
 
That’s not bringing God into our work. 
That’s using God for work.

Faith, family, work.
Work serves the family. Family serves God.

Flip this order and it gets ugly.
It’s subtle. And very easy to do.

What we think is stewardship can become idolatry.

You’re 48. Income just hit $520K.
You worked hard. Pursued excellence. Honored God in your career.

The promotions came. 
The income grew. 
You were faithful.

But now there’s this… tension.

You want to live simply. Give generously. Be present with your family.

But you’re earning more than you ever imagined.

Part of you feels guilty. “Do I really need this much?”

Part of you feels proud. “I worked for this.”

Part of you feels confused. “What does God want me to do with it?”

Here’s what I’ve learned both personally and working with hundreds of families:

The income isn’t the problem. 
The unclear purpose is.

God doesn’t call you to earn less to prove your faithfulness.

He calls you to steward more with Kingdom intentionality.

The question isn’t: “Should I earn this much?”

It’s: “What is this much FOR?”

Excellence in your career can honor God.
Provision for your family can honor God.
Generosity with the surplus absolutely honors God.

The tension dissolves when your income has a mission beyond your mortgage.

2020: Thought money was the answer
2021: Thought success would satisfy  
2022: Cancer changed everything

Suddenly none of it mattered.

Not the portfolio size.
Not the business growth.
Not the recognition.
Not the accumulation.

Only 3 things mattered:

1.  Faith - Was I walking with Jesus?
2. Family - Was I loving them well?
3. Impact - Was I serving others?

Everything else was noise.

Here’s the truth they don’t teach:

Money is a tool, not a destination.
When you reflect back on life, 
Money won’t be what mattered.

Cancer gave me clarity early on.
Don’t wait for cancer to teach you this.

The things that matter most?
You can start focusing on them today.

Your health won’t last forever.
Your wealth can’t save you.
Your time is limited.

But your impact?
That’s eternal.

It won’t happen by accident.

Virtuous, ambitious fathers are fighting a massive battle.

Everyone’s sick, not sleeping. 
Wife, kids, employees, clients, all demanding more, and more of you.

The bills keep coming, the goals keep growing, the news gets more daunting.

Juggling 1000 plates feeling like there’s no help or end in sight.

1 million puzzle pieces and no idea how they all fits together.

Men,

Don’t go to battle alone.
“It’s not good for man to be alone.”

Pray daily.
Join a men’s group.
Seek and pay for wise council.
Don’t do everything yourself.

You already have everything you need to accomplish God’s will in your life.

But his plan is too great to do it without him and without a band of brothers.

He designed it that way.

I used to think success was:

- 12 rental properties
- Ability to not have to work
- Winning in business… ALWAYS
- Titles, rewards, and recognition
- Traveling and stacking experiences for ME

Now I see it’s:

- My wife able to stay home w/ kids
- Building high impact businesses I love
- Growing deeper love w/ Christ, my wife, kids
- Radically generous w/ time, talent, treasure 
- Own home that is a center for community
- Blessing family legacy for generations

My definition of success is different than most

If I don’t:

1. Write this down
2. Have a team to help
3. Share it for accountability
4. Bring it to prayer and surrender
5. Re-align assets, savings regularly 

Then the current of the world will sweep me away.

And my family with it.

I won’t let that happen. 

It’s my role to see that our mission is accomplished.

Meaning you could’ve given $70K for the same net cost.

Most Christians overpay taxes and undergive to the Kingdom.

Here’s how it works:


EXAMPLE 1: Donor-Advised Fund with appreciated stock


- $52k in Apple stock. Bought for $12K.

- Gift the stock. Deduct $52K. No capital gains tax ($8k savings)

- Same cost to you. 
- $8K more to the Kingdom.


EXAMPLE 2: Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) at 70+


- You’re 72. RMD forces $85K withdrawal. 
- Taxed at 15% = $12.7k tax.

- Instead: QCD $50K directly to church. - Taxable income now $35K. Tax: $3500.
- Saved $9,200. Gave $50K. 

EXAMPLE 3: Bunching contributions

- Instead of $52K/yr, give $156K every 3 years to DAF.
- Itemize year 1. 
($32k savings above standard deduction)

- Standard deduction years 2-3.

- Same giving. $18k+ in extra tax savings every 3 yrs.


Most Christians are accidentally generous to the government.

Not because they don’t care.

Because they don’t know the tools exist.
You can honor God AND honor good stewardship.

Giving more to the Kingdom while paying less to the IRS is stewardship.

Everything locked up. Illiquid. Inaccessible.

What happened:

Kitchen $62K. Basement $48K. Deck $38K. 
Master bath $32K. Roof: $40k Fence: $12k
Car 1: $45k Car 2: $38k. Big trips: $50k

Every yr another project. 
Another major expense.
A life chasing the most recent fire. 

Here’s the pattern I see:

High income. 
Maxing 401(k). 
House appreciating.
Debt pay down.

But…

Zero liquidity. Zero flexibility. Zero options.

Too many families in a spot where they feel blessed in a beautiful home but trapped until 65+  to keep the dream alive. 

3 quick tips: 

1. Make a distinction between true savings, and deferred spending.
2. Create specific, intentional goals and priorities for the family. 
3. Define necessary true savings rates. 
4. Know the trade off cost before making the major purchase. 

Most people don’t know they’re shaving a decade off their retirement until it’s too late.

How does a family with high income still feel financially stretched?

It’s not about income.
It’s about intention.

Working with high earning families, I’ve seen it repeatedly:

→ The VP of sales making $750k with nothing left at year-end
→ The business owner with $5M net worth but monthly cash stress
→ The executive who can’t increase giving because “there’s nothing extra”

Money flows to what we value.
But only when we direct it there first.

Nothing sinful.

Age 45: Income $280K. Spending $180K/yr. Saving $44k/yr. Need $4.5M to retire.

Income climbed $200K. 
Retirement target jumped $3.25M.

Here’s what I’ve noticed: The last 10-15 yrs before retirement is when lifestyle inflation destroys plans.

New cars | Bigger house | Better vacations

“We can afford it now.”
But every upgrade costs 25x that amount to sustain in retirement.

The couple who kept spending at $180K:
Age 55: Need $4.5M. Save $165k/yr.
Have $2.9M. Retire at 60.

The couple who let it drift to $310K:
Age 55: Need $7.75M. Save $60k/yr. 
Have $1.8M. Retire at… 70? Maybe?

Same income growth. One retires early. 
One can’t retire at all.

Couple things that help a TON:

1. Pay off all debt by retirement. Replace monthly pmt w/ monthly savings.
2. Build efficient safe dollars that allow higher withdrawal rate. 
3. Build a separate legacy plan for permission to spend down the rest. 
4. Tax plan. Now and for retirement.

Age 64. Portfolio: $3.2M. Ready to retire.
Without planning: Retire → get conservative → preserve principal → cut giving.

Working years: Income $420K. Gave $65K/year (15.5%).

Retirement plan: Withdraw $150k/yr. Give $15k?

Wait. Giving just dropped 75%?

Kingdom impact fades exactly when you have the most time to make it.

Main reasons it’s cut?

- what if I run out?
- will I leave something to my kids? 

How to maintain (or increase) giving in retirement:

1.	Calculate true need: family spend $10k/m… maintain giving $5k/m

2.	Structure retirement income: Live on $120. Give $60K. Total $180k withdrawal

3.	$1.5M permanent death benefit secured guarantees legacy.

4.	Use QCDs at 70½: RMDs go straight to church, tax-free makes it all last. 

5.	Use donor advised fund in final 5 yrs of working to build up future giving and increase deductions. 

By age 72: Given $700k in retirement. Portfolio still growing.

You spent 40 years building wealth.
Don’t spend 20 years hoarding it.

Retirement isn’t when generosity shrinks. 
It’s when it accelerates.

The “millionaire next door” has $1.2M saved for retirement at age 62.

They followed all the rules - maxed 401k for 25 years, lived below their means, bought target date funds.

If they use the “safe” 4% withdrawal rule that’s $48k/year to live on.

But here’s what $48k actually covers today

- Health insurance $12k/yr. 
- Property taxes $7k/yr. 
- Utilities $5k/yr.

That’s $24k gone before groceries, gas, or anything fun.

The 4% rule was built for 2% inflation.

Today ?

- Inflation is running 4-6%
- Health insurance is $1k/m
- Social security is failing
- Long term care is 7-15k/m

This is why people with “enough” money are still scared of retiring, giving and spending. 

A million dollars isn’t what it used to be.

And pensions are all but extinct. 

We need a new, more intentional plan.

We compare accolades, 
Then that starts going well…
So we start comparing income
Then that starts going well…

So we compare wealth
Then that starts going well…

 So we switch to compare stuff
Then that starts going well…

So then we compare kids…

And so on and so on. 

As soon as you feel ahead,
the scoreboard changes. 

Only leading to more stress, feelings of inadequacy, no peace, and the endless pursuit of more.

Why are we this way? 

Our hearts are restless until we rest in him.

"Be a good steward."
We've heard it a thousand times.

But what does it really mean?

It's not just:

- Having a budget
- Saving for retirement
- Giving 10%

It's aligning every resource with God's vision for your life.

Seeing all as a blessing and multiplying that to give back to the Lord. 

When the Master returned in Jesus' parable,
He didn't ask if the servants saved the talents.
He asked what they did with them.

True stewardship is radically intentional.

It asks:

- What is God uniquely calling our family to?
- What is the purpose of this wealth?
- What goals if accomplished, will be evidence of our family mission lived?

We've experienced this transformation:

From managing money well…
To deploying resources purposefully

Every dollar.
Every minute.
Every relationship.
Every skill.

All aligned with the vision He's given us.

"Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much."

Here’s what I’d do if my sons were 16 and I wanted to prepare them for the world while setting them up well. (Smart, not spoiled)

1. Invest in their spiritual growth. 
2. Encourage and incentivize a gap year.
3. “fake rent” saved for their first house. 
4. Start a business or get a boring job.
5. Build a system for their earnings.
6. Match all of their giving and saving. 

Here’s what I mean with each:

1. Invest in their spiritual growth. 

- Signing them up for or organizing and running Retreats, spiritual direction, mission trips. Hosting friends for bible study. 

2. Encourage and incentivize a gap year.

- Either year of service/ mission 
AND/OR
-Year of working/ coaching on life skills (sales, entrepreneurship, speaking, finance)

3. “fake rent” saved for their first house. 

- Start small ($100/m)and grow each year. 
(Teaches responsibility and need to work)

4. Start a business or get a boring job.

- Have to choose one or the other. 
(Encourage business ownership and show the many benefits. Hours worked doesn’t matter as much as effort put in and results. )

5. Build a system for their earnings.

- 10% giving, 50% saving minimums, 40% whatever they want.
- Custodial Roth, investments, credit card, etc

6. Match all of their giving and saving. 

- Pretty self explanatory.

7. Cover 50% of college or 100% of business start up/ house down pmt.

- I want to disincentivize college while still helping and fully encourage business and home ownership. 


None of the above would be a surprise for them. 

We’ll talk about their whole life of what we’re preparing them for. 

They are a part of our family team and family mission. They’ll know that mission, be welcomed into it and have chances to participate their whole life.

These are just some of the practicals we’re planning on for this stage.

You’re money can go 4 places:

1. Spend it
2. Give it to charity 
3. Give it to kids
4. Taxes

2. Build an intentional plan to achieve it
3. Minimize #4 so it can go to #1-3

You should feel excited.

When the bonus lands, you’re not deciding. You’re deploying.

This time can be different. 
But only if you build the framework first.
