Taking accountability shouldn't sound like an apology.
But sometimes we confuse the two.

A small sentence can make or break our start.

Most people walk into difficult conversations with a script.

Leaders walk in with a ritual.

The difference? 
One prepares what to say.
The other prepares who to be.

When I failed at difficult conversations, it wasn't because I wasn't prepared. It was because I had prepared myself poorly.

I was focusing on what I thought I should say instead of trying to understand the other person. 

Here's the 5-minute pre-conversation ritual that works.

↳ Stop asking "What do I need to say?"
↳ Start asking "What does this person care about most?"
👉 Write down their top 3 priorities before you write your own

↳ Define what success looks like for BOTH of you
↳ Not just your goal, their goal too
👉 "If this goes well, what changes for them?"

3️⃣ The Emotional Pre-Flight (90 seconds)
↳ Name what you're feeling (anxiety, frustration, defensiveness)
↳ Acknowledge it, then park it
👉 Three deep breaths to reset your nervous system

4️⃣ The Assumption Check (60 seconds)
↳ List your assumptions about their position
↳ Mark each one as "verified" or "assumption"

In 2012, I completed 15 years in the corporate world.

Life was fast-paced, intense—18-hour workdays, back-to-back meetings, and constantly juggling projects.

This comment hit me harder than most.

Chaos isn’t the test.

Composure is.

We were in an M&A meeting.
Tension thick enough to cut through.
Numbers clashed.
Egos clashed harder.

Midway, the other side demanded retention bonuses for their top team.. a sudden addition that stretched our budget thin.

You could feel the air shift.
Our finance head frowned.

I looked at my CEO.
He didn’t flinch.
He just said,
“Let’s hear 𝘸𝘩𝘺 they need it.”

Then he listened.
𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 listened.

Turned out their leaders were anxious about job security.
They weren’t pushing greed.
They were asking for assurance.

So he reframed the offer.
No extra payout.
Just a six-month performance-based retention plan.

Deal saved.
Team trust built.

Because in rooms where chaos reigns,
calm becomes strategy.

That’s what authority really is.
Not volume.
Not titles.
But the ability to create order when everything feels unstable.

Composure isn’t about keeping quiet.
It’s about keeping clarity.

And that day, I learned:
Deals don’t collapse from conflict.
They collapse from tone.

Because chaos doesn’t define leaders.
Composure, and the authority it commands, does.

Your legacy starts in minutes.
