The leadership lesson that took me 33 years to learn.
We often think a hobby is a distraction from our business.

We tell ourselves, "I am too busy." 
We say, "Maybe next year."
We let our job become our only identity.

I watched the first UFC years ago. I discovered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), and I was completely fascinated. I told myself: "I need to learn this."
But life happens. It took me 33 years to finally start.
33 years of waiting.

Today, BJJ is one of my biggest passions. And it taught me a hard truth about leadership.

A passion outside of work makes you a better leader in your business mission.

You do not have to wait 33 years to start your own.
Here are 5 ways to uncover your new passion today:

1️⃣ Dig into your childhood
Pay attention to what you naturally loved before the world told you what you should do.

2️⃣ Force a list of 10
The first few ideas are easy, but forcing yourself to list ten passions uncovers buried interests.

3️⃣ Combine old skills with new interests
You do not need to throw away your past experience. Apply it to a new area you love.

4️⃣ Engage in "Unnecessary Creation"
Dedicating time to creative projects with no ROI allows you to discover neglected aptitudes.

5️⃣ Choose the "more interesting" path
When faced with a choice, do not always optimize for productivity. Optimize for meaning.

Don't wait 33 years to step on the mat.
To be a better leader at work, you must be willing to become a beginner outside of it.

4 ways to build your career around a purpose

I've read over 400 books looking for fancy motivation tools.
But the real answer isn't a tool. It's a daily behavior.

For years, I searched for the perfect motivation 'machine'.
I thought the answer was hidden in complex theories from hundreds of books.

But I was wrong.

Motivation isn't a machine you build. 
It's a switch you flip every day.

1️⃣ Treat each person with respect.
  -> Even when stress is high.
  -> Be direct, clear, and respectful.

2️⃣ Say “Thank you” often.
  -> For every small success.
  -> Be specific about why you’re thanking them.

3️⃣ Give them your time.
  -> Time is our most limited resource.
  -> One-on-one meetings show they matter.

4️⃣ Promote continuous improvement.
  -> Lead by example.
  -> “I’m working on being a better listener. Can you give me two suggestions?”

5️⃣ Be vulnerable.
  -> No one is perfect.
  -> “I made a mistake, and you were right.”

An appreciated person always does more.

The answer you're looking for isn't in another book.
