(The REAL tell)

WORDS.

Words this. Words that.

ChatGPT freakin' looooves WORDS.

Think about it. LLM = Large Language Model

Which means all the words are AI tells. Obviously.

So there ya go. That's how you spot AI copy.

Now...

Can we pretty please stop making these stupid proclamations? 😜

Let's all just agree to think critically about who used the words and writing patterns that AI was trained on, first. *cough* humans *cough*

Instead of worrying about "how" you can tell if AI wrote it, let's worry more about whether the writing is any good.

I, for one, plan to focus on publishing writing that has purpose. 

And (for the sake of our collective sanity) a little bit of SOUL.

It’s one of those days today…I’m sitting in the hospital with my oldest (his chemo hit hard this week and he unexpectedly needs a blood transfusion)...

When my youngest calls from school because his head feels “squishy squishy”* and I’m scrambling to find someone to pick him up.

*Side note: stealing his description of a headache for a future writing project 😂 

On the plus side, I got all my deliverables done ahead of schedule this week! 

And it’s days like these that remind me how thankful I am to have a business — and clients — that support this kind of flexibility.

This tired mama is VERY ready for the weekend!

I find it hilarious when people argue after they're called out for using AI.

My dude.

You've been called out for using AI and you have 2 options,:

1. Live with the fact that we noticed and move on.

2. Accept the feedback and make some changes.

If you really DIDN'T use AI, you've just been told you sound like a bot.

It's probably time to get weird. Or at the very least...try to write like a human 😅

Why are you arguing?!

I've been avoiding posting here for some really dumb reasons.

Well, not all of the reasons are dumb, I suppose. 

The first two are actually pretty legit:

For one, I've been busy with client work, which is amazing and something I'm eternally grateful for. 

The second is that I've been busy with life as my oldest kiddo heads into year 2 of his battle against cancer.

But, the third reason I've not been on here as much is concern about how it "looks."

(I'd say the "optics," but I've heard "optics" is on the outs because it's an AI tell 🙃 Then again, which word isn't these days?!)

Anywho, I digress. 

The point is I wasn't posting partly because I don't want clients to see me on here and think, "Shouldn't she be working on my project?!" 

But that's silly, isn't it?

I'm a writer. That's what I do. 

I write.

And I love it. (Incidentally, this is also why I don't let AI write for me. Go figure, eh?)

I need to show up here because writing is the clearest way for me to share my thoughts. 

And who wants to work with a writer who doesn't, well, enjoy writing?

Not my clients. I know that for a fact.

I just figured I'd share in case you're a fellow lurker lurking, instead of posting, for a nonsensical reason that only exists in your head. 

Maybe this will help you shake that thought – and the words – out onto the page💛

"I've spent close to 15 hours using AI to try and get this launch copy right, and I think it still sucks."

That's what they told me on our call. 

And Dearest Gentle Reader, it did indeed, suck.

But I don't judge when clients come to me with these kinds of problems.

They've experimented (absolutely nothing wrong with that) and come to the conclusion that it would be a lot less painful to work with a human copywriter.

Next time, they'll save themselves the headache and come to me, first.

PS maybe 20% of what they'd come up with was usable. 

That's a lot of wasted time. 

I get us 75% of the way there JUST through voice of client interviews and market analysis.

Oh, and almost 2 decades of research and writing experience, of course 😉

"Thank you, Queen!" 

I'd complimented the barista at Starbucks and she sent me off with those words. 

I left absolutely beaming from the energy and her words. 

And even after I promptly hit a blasted speedbump and splashed half my cafe misto all over my gear shifter, I still felt good driving away because of that send off.

It's a powerful reminder of what the unexpected can do.

There are obvious, standard ways to say something...

And then there are fresh, new ways to say the same thing that can add a little sparkle to someone's day ✨

That's what makes people remember you. 

So the next time you're writing your copy, try switching it up a bit.

Know your audience ("Queen" might not be the right term of endearment for everyone 😅), and consider how you can say something a little different or sparklingly unexpected. 

You might be surprised how that small change in your communication shifts how your audience thinks of you and your business!

Every. Single. Time. 

It literally never fails that I will spend an hour proofreading, see zero typos, confidently smash that "post" button and then IMMEDIATELY see THE most obvious typo.

When I was 13, my 'stylist' decided an orange choppy mullet look was right for me.

Spoiler: it wasn't

(I'll throw a pic in the comments if you wanna see how awful it was)

So when I walked away from my latest hair appointment feeling like I might be reliving that style, I panicked. 

But, being the people-pleaser I am, I decided to try and get used to it.

A week later, I still hated it (not as much as that 9th grade mess, but enough).

I had a choice to make:

Call my stylist and tell her how I felt
Or suck it up and find a new stylist 🙃

The thought of being a "complainer" gives me the heebie-jeebies...

But not as much as the thought of finding a new stylist 😅

So I told myself to over it and call my stylist. 

And guess what?

We had a great conversation, booked a time for the fix, and she was beyond thankful I gave her a chance to redo it. 

Because the alternative is what we all live in fear of: 

A bad review or a client who ghosts.  And no one wants that.

We ALL want the chance to fix things if they miss the mark.

I mean, you better believe if a client isn't happy, I want to figure out how to fix the problem. Because no collaboration is one-sided.

At least, it's not if you work with providers who are truly strategic partners 😉

P.S. Hair's all fixed and the experience wasn't half as traumatizing as walking around with the orange chop in middle school 😂
