“You’re giving away too much for free”


My 14 year old told me that this week.


He overheard me talking to a friend about their business and where they were stuck.  I gave them some ideas and a strategy on what I’ve seen work in similar situations before. 

When we got off the call, my son asked me how much they pay me. 

“They’re not paying me, I wanted help them out”… leading to his comment. 


Maybe I’m just a naive guy in his mid 40’s, but I believe the universe will conspire for that payment to come back around - but maybe not directly from that person. 

Maybe they’ll intro me to a client…Maybe not. It doesn’t really matter, it’ll all work out some way. 

It doesn’t always have to be a linear transaction every time. 

Idk, maybe I am wrong and I should be taking advice from him here.

Tuning into that heightened sense of awareness and the rarity of the situation made it feel almost supernatural. 
 

I got to taste a bit of that awe and wonder again tonight - waking the dogs under the supermoon.  

Even for just a few moments.

Got hit with a wave of gratitude for where I’ve been and where I am - my loved ones tell me it’s been a journey. I don’t disagree. 


Fascinating how our priorities naturally shift and change with time. 

Never would have thought walking my dogs would trigger similar emotions to these experiences I relentlessly chased.

One big deal lands and suddenly we’re like:

“I should buy real estate.”

“Honestly, I might retire early.”

Then the deal slips and we spiral into:

“Tech is dead.”
“Why did I choose Sales?”

I keep hearing this in SaaS, over and over - 

inbound = small ACV deals
outbound = enterprise

That’s not always true.

A lot depends on your space, product, buyer persona, and stage.

At Storylane, almost every enterprise customer came inbound.
A strong brand + PLG motion + optimized sales-led, land-and-expand approach = plenty of six-figure deals.

If you can, use PLG to route low-ACV prospects and have your sales team focus on the whales.
Then layer outbound on top, but make it warm outbound. Use intent signals, brand familiarity, and existing traction. Everything gets easier.

At Nudge, we sell to marketing leaders in commerce and retail.
Outbound matters a lot. But so does building a brand and inbound engine that compounds over time.
