I Ran 20 Prompts for One AI Character. Here's What Natural Language Can't Do.

Most AI image tutorials skip the hardest part.

Generating one good image is easy. Generating twenty images of the same fictional character, each in different poses, lighting, outfits, and environments, while maintaining exact physical identity?

That's where prompting gets real.

Took an image from MidJourney. East Asian woman, wavy auburn hair, coral-red lips. One detail I wanted locked: the eyes. Left eye amber-gold. Right eye green-hazel.

Claude and I wrote 20 prompts. Natural language, no tag stacking. Each prompt referenced the same identity markers. Forehead mole on left side. Scattered freckles across nose bridge. Specific eye colors in every description.

The results?

Beautiful. But inconsistent.

The mole moved. Sometimes left side, sometimes center, sometimes gone. The difference in eyes worked in close-ups, then vanished in full-body shots. Freckle density dropped in some images. Sometimes both eyes looked the same green.

My finding: Natural language prompting interprets identity specs as suggestions, not constraints.

When you write "left amber-gold eye, right green-hazel," the model reads it as a stylistic note. Not a parameter lock. Across 20 generations, that interpretation drifts.

JSON-structured prompts with explicit fields enforce consistency. They're harder to write, less poetic, but they treat identity markers as fixed variables.

The tradeoff is real.

Natural language gives you mood, atmosphere, cinematic flow. Structure gives you repeatability.

For character series work, I will be testing hybrid approaches. Natural language for environment and lighting. JSON structure for face and body specs.

Still experimenting. But the gap is clear.

Key insight: Natural language suggests identity. Structure enforces it. Use both.
