I developed an innovative approach for warehousing which requires 15% of the labor and 50% of the space. Sound expensive? You might be surprised to hear about a typical 18 month payback.

DCS is a great organization with an amazing close knit culture. 

My role here was to concept and sell cutting edge automation systems for e-commerce warehouses. Some people called my ideas crazy, some loved them. It was fun keeping the team on their toes. 

Together we built some amazing things through solid partnerships with OEM suppliers and clients alike.

We did a lot, providing fully integrated systems encompassing high speed pouch, case, tote & pallet 
handling. This included accumulation, merging, sortation, distribution, order fulfillment, inspection, verification, high density storage, WMS interfacing, truck loading & unloading, and robotic deployment.

I left DCS because it was just time to pursue my own crazy dreams of founding my own business.

I worked with Dave Stinson along with the awesome and eccentric Western Region team. Dave brought me in to build a controls team from scratch for the region. It was a great challenge of building a new team while concepting and selling automated systems to new customers.

As the principal engineer I was responsible for approving designs from both Mike Smeltzer's concepting team and Tim Lasko's engineering team. After a few rounds of back and forth, a white board full of dry erase marker notes, and Kevin Gray saying something hilarious, we would settle on something that would work for the customer.

We executed projects for citrus, almond, wine and various other industries. We even executed a project in a cold storage (-15 degree) facility. Yep that was cold...

Great team and great memories!

Principal Engineer

Barry-Wehmiller Design Group

Becoming a Director at Design Group means you know how to lead and you have a solid client base.

During this time I was located in the Modesto, CA office. We had a lot of projects focused on wineries both big and small. My team of project managers and engineers knew how to get the job done and be entertaining as well. Late night working sessions were often accompanied by a showing of Super Troopers or some other slapstick comedy.

We developed budgets for customers and helped them justify big spending projects by calculating the IRR.

The project management team was a well oiled machine executing projects as big as $30MM. They were masters at negotiating OEM equipment purchases and herding the cats (team members) as PMs do best. At one point our little office of 12 had a significant portion of the Design Group nationwide staff working on our winery projects. 

The mechanical engineering team spearheaded the first 3D laser scanning and facility design that I know of and were great at developing user friendly layouts in CAD. FAT tests were rock solid. 

The electrical engineering team knew NEC, UL and NFPA 79E compliance like the back of their hand. They programmed Allen Bradley PLCs in their sleep and some even loved it enough to automate things at home.

It was a pleasure leading this team.

Accountable for managing all aspects of industrial engineering projects from conceptual design through execution.  

The majority of projects managed were in the consumer beverage industry i.e. bottled water, carbonated soft drinks, beer and wine.

Accountable for all aspects of electrical engineering, controls engineering, and mechanical engineering for multiple high speed packaging lines.  This included hard-to-handle bottles such as light weight PET water bottles and reverse tapered wine bottles.

Have you ever had a nickname?

I was once dubbed “The Wolf” by a colleague. No, not the one from Wall Street but in reference to the problem-solver from 'Pulp Fiction.'

Why the comparison? Because I fix the very problems that give fulfillment warehouses and manufacturing facilities sleepless nights.

But I won’t label myself as an “expert” as there are no experts.

So, who am I? I am a turn-key system integrator with a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that allow me to develop creative solutions for your most nagging problems.

An ASRS system needs to be flexible to be useful…otherwise it is just an expensive monument 

I love the flexibility of shelf to person mobile robots but there are times when a shuttle system would be a solid fit...but...
legacy ASRS shuttle systems were limited to a standard tote size and a single aisle

The shuttles from HWArobotics fixes several of the traditional challenges of traditional ASRS systems

--Totes + corrugated cases--
This is important because many systems on the market are plastic tote only.
Tote only often forces users to decant all product into the tote.
Orders received for a full carton/case of the product are then required to be picked from either traditional racking or re-packed from the tote goods to person system.
Being able to put away original cartons is quite beneficial

--Containers of variable widths--
Another limiting factor to most tote based systems is that all containers must be the same size.
One size does not fit all, leaving many under utilized totes

--Shuttles that can travel in any direction--
The freedom of 4-way shuttles really shows up because product can be stored and retrieved anywhere in the system. 
Traditional single aisle ASRS uses either a pick and pass method or pick and sort method because not all SKUs can be stored in a single aisle.

These features add up to something quite unique and power that can transform distribution and fulfillment warehouses.

Warehouses need automation that handles the real world, not just a lab environment.

Automate the dull…the dirty…and the dangerous…🤖 
That is the core of my approach

This video shows pallet to person automation…instead of people riding on pallet jacks…robots bring pallets to the workers.

20 years ago, I visited a distribution center for Pepsi Bottling Group.

Every day, 100+ workers standing on motorized pallet jacks zoomed around
hopping on and off to pick orders for route delivery trucks
for regional supermarkets and convenience stores

(convenient for us shoppers...not the workers in the warehouse)

Many close calls and minor injuries occurred…occasionally a major injury would happen 😨 

Even with the frantic pace, the average picking pace for each worker was only 30-40 units per hour

(not including the labor to replenish pallets after the rush)

Until recently, the distribution center in the video operated in that legacy method with many people on motorized pallet jacks.

Today, 100+ Liftians Inc. robots bring pallets of pet products from controlled inventory to worker order picking stations

Each worker picks around 150 units per hour, greatly reducing the labor…

Replenishment is now easy because the pallet gets set on a stand at one location…
The forklift driver isn’t driving up and down aisles to put a pallet in the picking slot.

The best part is that injuries are nearly eliminated.
Moving 30 lb bags of pet food all shift is still not easy…
AMRs make it a lot safer than dodging a fast moving pallet jack while moving those heavy bags

Robots need to handle the real world, not just a lab environment.

As Director of Distribution at TENAQUIP, I led a national logistics network and oversaw the operations of three large-scale distribution centers in Montréal, Edmonton, and Vancouver, representing over 500,000 sq. ft. of capacity. My mandate was to drive operational excellence, scale the business, and deliver measurable results while ensuring service quality and strategic alignment.

I had the privilege of leading and inspiring a team of more than 325 employees across Canada, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and peak performance. As part of the executive leadership team, I contributed to strategic decision-making and growth planning at the company level.

A key part of my role involved spearheading major transformation projects. I directed the go-live and stabilization of Infor WMS across the distribution network, ensuring a smooth deployment, enhanced visibility, and stronger process integration. I also championed automation and continuous improvement initiatives that significantly improved efficiency, scalability, and service reliability.

My focus on strategic impact extended to financial decision-making. I successfully prevented a potential $25M loss by halting a high-risk project and designing a $10M alternative with far stronger ROI and long-term value. Metro Inc.

As Director of Distribution for Metro’s Fresh Distribution Center, I led one of the most advanced logistics operations in Canada, overseeing a large-scale, high-volume environment dedicated to the handling and distribution of fresh and highly perishable products. My responsibilities spanned all aspects of distribution center management, automation, performance, and operational excellence.

I had the privilege of leading a workforce of more than 425 unionized employees and 40+ management staff within a 566,000 sq. ft. facility featuring 99 dock doors and ceiling heights of up to 93 ft. The site operated 24/7 and was powered by a WITRON WMS system, handling more than 15,000 pallets (700,000 cases) in weekly outbound shipments.

A key focus of my role was driving efficiency and reliability across the network. I successfully resolved chronic delivery delays and stabilized on-time performance for 275 stores, directly enhancing service levels and customer satisfaction. I also implemented workflow optimizations that increased workforce productivity by 10% in the first year and delivered a 25% boost in capacity and throughput without additional capital investment.

My leadership extended beyond daily operations to include maintenance, capital projects, and automation initiatives, ensuring the distribution center maintained best-in-class reliability and performance. Working in a time-sensitive fresh food environment taught me the importance of precision, speed, and quality. All critical factors in maintaining product integrity and meeting customer expectations.

Director of Distribution - Fresh DC

As Operations Manager for Metro’s Meat & Frozen distribution operations in Québec, I was responsible for leading a high-performance team and ensuring the seamless flow of goods through a 99,000 sq. ft. temperature-controlled distribution center. My focus was on operational excellence, process optimization, and strict adherence to food safety and regulatory standards.

I managed a team of 6 supervisors and 70 employees across all key functions, including receiving, shipping, transportation, inventory, and maintenance. Through hands-on leadership and strategic direction, I created a culture of collaboration, performance, and accountability.

Continuous improvement was a key priority. I led several initiatives aimed at optimizing both physical workflows and system capabilities, which directly improved efficiency and service quality. I also restructured KPI traceability and accuracy, significantly enhancing performance visibility and enabling more data-driven decision-making.

Working within a fresh and frozen environment presented unique operational challenges. I ensured full compliance with HACCP standards and corporate Health & Safety programs, maintaining the highest levels of quality, safety, and product integrity.

Operations Manager - Meat & Frozen Food - Québec

Fleurigros

As Director of Distribution at Fleurigros 1995 Inc., I was responsible for overseeing the end-to-end supply chain of a highly perishable product line, including cut flowers, plants, and floral accessories. My mission was to ensure product freshness, quality, and reliable delivery across a province-wide network of florists.

I directed daily distribution operations and optimized inventory management, striking the right balance between product availability and waste reduction in a fast-moving, short shelf-life environment. I also led transportation logistics and carrier negotiations, improving both service reliability and cost performance.

Beyond distribution, I oversaw facility operations for both the warehouse and office environments, ensuring safety, functionality, and operational continuity. This role strengthened my expertise in managing time-sensitive supply chains and leading operations in an industry where speed and precision are critical to customer satisfaction.

As Director of Operations at Placements PM Inc., I led large-scale real estate development initiatives from concept to completion, overseeing the creation of 1,200 residential units across multiple projects. My responsibilities spanned every stage of the development lifecycle, including site identification, land acquisition, negotiations, permitting, and sales strategy.

Collaboration with key stakeholders was central to my work. I coordinated with city councils, engineering teams, and government authorities to secure necessary permits and approvals, ensuring projects advanced smoothly and remained compliant with all regulatory requirements.

I also conducted comprehensive profitability and feasibility analyses, providing actionable insights that shaped investment decisions and maximized returns. This role allowed me to bridge strategic planning with on-the-ground execution, driving projects that contributed significantly to the company’s growth and long-term portfolio value.

I’ve led national distribution networks of up to 475 people, managed budgets over $100M, and consistently delivered transformation projects that accelerated growth and improved profitability. My work includes stabilizing underperforming operations, deploying WMS systems (Infor, Oracle, WITRON), and boosting capacity and throughput by double digits.
