It is easy to get caught up in tasks, but people want leaders who slow down, listen to concerns and take actions that address those concerns.

The question of whether we should push our employees or pull our employees can be a tough one.

Have high standards. If you lead correctly, your employees will want to do their best to match or exceed those standards.

Today, at a Starbucks India, I saw a man sitting comfortably with his shoes on the table.
Coffee in hand. Laptop open. Completely unbothered.

No, he wasn’t struggling.
No, he wasn’t unaware.
He looked affluent, confident, educated.
And for a moment, I felt irritated.
Then disappointed.
Then… thoughtful.

We often complain that India lacks civic sense.
That the government doesn’t do enough.
That systems are broken.

But moments like these make me wonder —
Is civic sense only a policy problem? Or a personal one?

Because no law teaches you that a table where someone eats is not a footrest.
No regulation teaches you that public spaces are shared spaces.
That comes from culture. Upbringing. Collective consciousness.

A few years ago, when I visited Japan, something stayed with me.
No one was watching.
No fines being imposed.
Yet people queued patiently, cleaned up after themselves, spoke softly in public spaces, and treated common areas with almost sacred respect.
Not because they feared punishment.
But because they felt responsibility.
In Japan, cleanliness isn’t outsourced to the state.
Manners aren’t dependent on wealth.
Respect isn’t optional.

And that’s the uncomfortable truth we don’t like addressing.
👉 Affluence does not automatically come with class.
👉 Education does not guarantee etiquette.
👉 Blaming the government is easier than correcting ourselves.

Civic sense is not something the government can inject into us.
It’s something we practice — daily, quietly, consistently.
In how we sit.
How we speak.
How we occupy space that doesn’t belong to us alone.
If we want better cities, better systems, better governance —
it starts with better citizens.
Because nation-building isn’t only about policies and politics.
Sometimes, it starts with something as small as keeping your shoes off the table.

Yesterday reminded me why founders energise me more than any motivational quote ever could.

It was completely unplanned.
Post a long, exhausting day.
No agenda. No pitch decks. No “so what do you do?” conversations.

Just a table full of people who are building.
What struck me wasn’t just their achievements — it was the humility with which they carried them. People who have built successful brands, deep-tech companies, legacy businesses, creative practices, and investment careers — yet were curious, grounded, and generous with their stories.

We were a wonderfully mixed group:
• Gagandeep M., founder of the highly successful cosmetic brand Pilgrim
• Piyush Verma, IIT Delhi & MIT alum, now building a deep-tech startup, Neural Defend
• Vishal Gupta, from the iconic Shyam Garments — a businessman with a rare nation-building vision. 
• Shivani, a vibrant and accomplished architect
• Vipin Anand, entrepreneur and investment strategist. 

Different industries. Different journeys.

But the same spark — to build something meaningful, to learn continuously, and to stay human while doing it.

I realised something on my way back home:
This is a different kind of unwinding.
The kind that doesn’t drain you — it recharges you.
Grateful for conversations like these.

Every year, I take one spiritual trip. This year, it was to Benaras. 
Not as a tourist.
Not as a checklist destination.
But as a pause.

Varanasi is everything modern life tells you to avoid— crowded lanes, chaos, noise, unpredictability. And yet, it’s one of the most anchored places I’ve ever been to.

What struck me wasn’t just the spirituality.
It were the people.
In cities, success often looks loud—titles, growth charts, milestones, speed.
In places like Varanasi, ambition wears a different face.

Here, success can mean:
- Doing your work with dignity.
- Showing up every day without resentment.
-Being deeply rooted in faith, family, and routine. 

There’s no rush to “be more.”
There’s quiet confidence in being enough.
Being in such spaces forces you to internalize things you don’t notice otherwise. 
How much of our stress comes from comparison, how much ambition is borrowed, how rarely we ask ourselves why we want what we want.

Spiritually aligned places don’t magically fix you.
But they rearrange your thoughts.
They soften the ego.
They give perspective that no book or podcast can.

I returned not calmer—but clearer.

With fewer unnecessary urgencies.

And a deeper respect for the fact that growth doesn’t look the same everywhere.

Sometimes, the most powerful journeys aren’t about moving ahead.
 
They’re about realigning before you do.

“I already got it checked on ChatGPT”— every second client, lately.
 A close friend of mine is a neurologist.
She once told me how exhausting it is when patients come in after diagnosing themselves on Google.

They don’t just ask questions.
They argue.

- “But Google says it’s definitely this.”
- “I read a forum where someone had the same symptoms.”
- “Are you sure? Because this article says otherwise.”

Lately, I feel her pain. Deeply. Professionally. Legally.

Clients now come to us with agreements saying:

“Just review this. We made it using ChatGPT.”
And by review, they often mean:
- “Please rubber-stamp it.”
- “Just check for typos.”
- “It’s mostly standard, right?”

Except…
• Clauses contradict each other
• Key protections are missing
• Jurisdiction makes no sense
• Risk allocation is vibes-based
• And my favourite: “This clause sounded very professional so we kept it”

- ChatGPT / AI is brilliant.
- Google is powerful.
- WebMD is… entertaining.

But none of them are liable when things go wrong.

They won’t:
- Sit across the table during a dispute
- Explain your intent to an angry investor
- Defend a badly drafted clause
- Or take responsibility when a “harmless” line costs you real money

Using AI to assist professionals = smart.
Using AI to replace professionals = expensive optimism.

By all means:
- Draft
- Brainstorm
- Learn

But please don’t walk into a lawyer’s office the way patients walk into a doctor’s clinic saying:
“I already know what it is. I just need you to agree.”
Because law, like medicine, isn’t about information alone.
It’s about judgment, context, experience — and knowing what not to say on paper.

Founders have become addicted to templates.
- Term sheet template.
- Shareholders agreement template.
- ESOP template.
- Privacy policy template.
- AI-generated contracts.

Everything is about finding the fastest shortcut to look “startup ready”.
What most founders don’t realise is this:

-Templates don’t understand your business.

They don’t know:
- Who actually controls your company
- What risk you’re taking with investors
- How your revenue flows
- What happens if a co-founder walks out
- How a future acquisition will read this document

A clause that is harmless for one startup can be fatal for another.

Even worse is the new trend:
“ChatGPT drafted it, so it should be fine.”
AI is incredible — I use it every day.
But AI doesn’t carry liability.
You do.

When a dispute happens, no one will ask:
“Which prompt did you use?”
They will ask:
“Why did you sign this?”

I’ve seen:
-Founders lose control because of copied term sheets
-ESOPs that were legally invalid
-SHA clauses that blocked future funding
-Compliance disasters hidden inside boilerplate language

Templates don’t save time.
They postpone pain — and make it more expensive.

The real work of a founder is not filling blanks.
It’s making hard, specific decisions about:
control, risk, dilution, rights, and exit.
Shortcuts feel efficient.
But in startups, they are usually the most expensive choice you’ll ever make.
