Over the years I have maintained a select group of clients who regard me as a change guru. They have me on speed dial, and my job is simple - to guide them as they make the most of opportunities. My post pandemic world has allowed me to work with a new list of clients. Lately I have been doing one-on-one coaching, ghost-writing, creating business models, and generally having an incredible time helping amazing people achieve their visions. It is one of the most rewarding things I do - helping others make amazingly good things happen. Recently I have supported an Oxford EMBA graduate with launching a tech startup to improve the US healthcare system. I've also been helping a West African entrepreneur produce an educational memoir for a New York publishing house. I set up Cardinal Strategies Group in 2014 as a consortium of consultants, specializing primarily in healthcare projects.  Currently, I provide consulting services to investors who want to maximize their portfolio returns or need turn-around strategies for investments that are failing to thrive, or for investors who are ready to expand into Africa. Present projects include business transformation for a specialist hospital to maximize a multimillion-dollar investment; project management for a greenfield private hospital development; and business development for a tech start-up focused on pharmaceuticals.

As a managing partner at the Cardinal Strategies Group, my mission is to help build better businesses in Africa. To do that, I find people and organizations who are inspired to make a difference in Africa, and I look for ways to accelerate their strategies and goals. Our goal is to help each young woman find her inner strength and confidence, inspiring her to “learn-and-earn” and use her talents to grow her future opportunities. We offer each young woman a supportive environment with practical training and learning experiences that help her to develop professionally and to acquire useful business skills. We also nurture her community - creating a sustainable value chain for social entrepreneurship. In all we do, we teach our young women and their children to be environmentally responsible, and show them how they can help nurture Africa’s future too.

Danaction had a special focus on helping companies in Africa become “investor ready” – working directly with individual businesses to prepare them for funding and accelerated business growth. We also worked with investors who wanted to ensure that African companies they invest in sustain their growth and make their targets, helping these companies adapt, expand and deliver results. Consulting projects focused on raising standards of healthcare, and improving business operations in health facilities. Knowing what investors want was our core strength - we created the specific business models and strategies, org culture changes, management development experiences and training programs that helped companies transform and become more profitable and attractive to investors. Janine would create a custom blueprint for change and a clear strategy for attracting and securing funding. Her consulting efforts started with internal changes, coaching leadership teams, creating more effective business operations and executing better management processes.

Contracted as interim MD in March 2012 to help the Danpong Group boost turnover in medical units (Clinic, Pharmacies, Labs), and to develop a five-year business expansion plan to establish the company and its brand across Ghana, creating state-of-the-art and comprehensive health facilities that deliver the highest quality of professional medical services. Dramatically increased Clinic turnover and profits based on operational improvements, adding new services and raising the standard of care. Also reduced pharmacy inventory losses significantly. Established expansion projects such as a complete pharmacy remodel, and initiatives to expand healthcare services to include additional revenue streams such as a new antenatal clinic facility and diagnostic services to respond to market needs, as well as new locations.

Danadams Pharmaceuticals

Hired as strategic consultant to enable Danadams Pharmaceuticals – the only manufacturer of ARVs (HIV drugs) in West Africa – to develop its investment potential and prepare its business units, managers and employees for growth. Initiated and implemented a major rebrand – including product rebranding, corporate culture changes and establishing a global image. My goal was to take Danadams from being a relatively unknown entity, to being a key Africa player in the global pharmaceutical market. My investor-ready strategy included making organizational changes so that leadership and employees could match their development to their growth trajectory. I focused on improving operational efficiency and making the business more data driven. At the same time, I handled contract negotiations with joint venture and R&D business partners in India, South Africa and the USA. For the funding, I prepared the CEO and management for investor roadshows in the USA, Europe and Africa, and coached management through subsequent due diligence discussions.

I have a proven track record of ensuring more profits through operational cost savings, and increased revenues through innovation and delivering on business opportunities. It is all about getting results! I am a widely experienced strategist and business development consultant whose passion is to help companies in Africa with accelerated change and growth. Throughout my career – in government, business, and non-profit environments – I have chosen to transform processes, change perceptions and influence meaningful outcomes and business results. These days, my focus is on change projects with far-reaching impact, and I align well with clients whose missions are to shape a better future.

Working remotely has increased my impact and reach. I have clients in the US, the UK, and all across Africa. I recently delivered a year-long technical assistance and executive coaching program remotely for the 10-person leadership team of a hospital in Ghana, as a World Bank vendor. Using mentoring, partnering, and skills training delivered online, I was able to equip and influence managers and staff to act on purpose-driven OKRs, which doubled company revenue and improved EBITDA by 35%. It has been so rewarding to watch this business flourish.

During the late eighties and nineties, I worked on transitioning intelligence structures in South Africa. In early 2000, I moved to the USA and joined Microsoft as a content and marketing strategist, creating their global online tech centers for Server products. An eighteen-month stint working with Simon Sinek inspired me to launch my own consulting career, and this led to a whirlwind of opportunities with high-potential start-ups, business mavericks, and world-changers. But I always had a longing in my heart for my home continent and returned in 2011 with a vision to help transform Africa through business. 

Since then I have focused on healthcare, education, and technology consulting projects, and have been making real change happen by solving problems unique to African business settings. How do I do it? By inspiring African companies to believe in creating a better future. By developing an empowered work culture where employees can thrive. And by finding tailored solutions for every business I work with: improving business models, accelerating revenue growth, and providing confidential and strategic guidance to CEOs and business leaders.
