Staff Backend Platform Engineer

Carta

- Led the platform engineering organization's efforts to reduce Carta's AWS bill by ~30% ($1.8M+ annualized) for FY2023

- Increased observability into our cloud infrastructure costs & usage (AWS, Kubernetes, etc) via Datadog, leveraging their Cloud Cost Monitoring (CCM) offering to link AWS cost data to Kubernetes metrics across multiple clusters, namespaces, deployments. 
Also built custom data pipelines on top of AWS cost data, initially (when CCM was not available yet, and AWS Cost Explorer was still very basic) using the following stack: S3 -> Glue/Redshift -> dbt via Airflow -> Looker for viz

- Helped teams optimize resource allocation & increase efficiency via automation (Kubecost Rightsizing APIs) and monitoring

- Worked with other platform engineers to optimize other AWS costs centers, mainly EC2 and RDS to eliminate unnecessary costs (e.g: Multi-AZ, provisioned IOPS for RDS databases on non-SLA'd environments)

- Equipped & assisted product and other engineering teams across Carta with the proper monitoring tools & knowledge (e.g: Deep Dive Learning Experience on Kubernetes resource internals, Datadog custom dashboards & monitors) to perform their own optimization efforts

- Was the main point of contact for the Carta <> Datadog relationship, as well as Datadog SME @ Carta, making sure we are up-to-date on the latest features and leveraging them correctly while monitoring for excess costs

- Participated in the software development life-cycle for core services solutions (e.g: SQS service for delayed messaging/job execution) that ensure the scalability, reliability and maintainability of the Sunshine Conversations platform
- Maintained and improved the reliability, scalability of our cloud infrastructure and systems (Kubernetes, Datadog APM/Logs/Monitoring, AWS via Terraform, Atlas MongoDB, Okta integrations, Github Actions CI/CD)

Our mandate was to scale up the Sunshine Conversations platform from 2 to N regions to adhere to Zendesk's availability & scalability standards as the platform becomes more and more central to Zendesk's operations

- Design & lead the development of Ludia's new events ingestion pipeline. Powered by Kafka, Kubernetes and built with CI/CD in mind, it will replace our AWS Kinesis+Lambda pipeline
- Transition from an ETL to ELT mindset, and our data warehouse from a Hadoop eco-system to more modern alternatives such as cloud-hosted Snowflake
- Manage and maintain Extract & Load pipelines (Fivetran, Snowpipes, etc..)
- Provide support for the analytics team at Ludia in terms of engineering and lead technical initiatives (such as data modelling pipelines with dbt)

SSENSE

- Assist the product team, by providing the technical POV, to prioritize and define our roadmap for the Online Shopping Experience at SSENSE.com (Conversion squad)
- Design technical solutions and lead the development process through agile methodologies in order to achieve said roadmap, with emphasis on quality, rapid prototyping, and data-driven feedback loop
- Manage releases for the services and product real estate owned by the squad, in collaboration with other squads
- Influence technical decisions and development standards at SSENSE by collaborating with other technical leads, senior developers and architecture committee 
- Provide coaching and mentorship to junior developers within the squad, but also at the organization level through workshops and presentations ("SSENSE University")

- Participated in the migration of our monolith PHP e-commerce platform to an event-based (AWS SNS/SQS) microservices (node.js) docker-cloud (kubernetes) architecture.

- Designed, developed and deployed the company's first implementation of Elasticsearch for our product catalog search service (Node.js Typescript API with Elasticsearch under the hood)

- Currently leading the Conversion squad as part of our new product organization
