Why Capital Ignores Profitable Business (And What It Chooses Instead)

Every startup has that moment.

No traction. No revenue. No clear way forward.

Just a team… and the weight of expectations.

In 2012, Stewart Butterfield and his team shut down Glitch, an online game they had spent years building.

It was creative.
Technically brilliant.
Loved by a small community.

But commercially?
It failed.

Investors were disappointed.
Employees were laid off.
The product was dead.

Most companies never recover from that moment.

But hidden inside the wreckage was something unexpected.
While building the game, the team had created an internal messaging tool to collaborate across time zones and workflows.

It worked better than email.
Better than anything they had used before.

So they did something most founders struggle to do:

→ they kept the infrastructure
→ they redefined the company

They didn’t pivot to survive.
They pivoted toward where the real value lived.

In 2020, Salesforce acquired Slack for $27.7 billion.

Failure didn’t destroy value.

It revealed it.
And the breakthrough didn’t come from persistence alone.
It came from the courage to abandon sunk costs, ego, and emotional attachment.

This is the moment most founders and leaders miss.
Execution requires removing three dangerous emotions:
• attachment to the original idea
• fear of admitting failure
• avoidance of uncomfortable decisions

When those disappear, clarity emerges.

Slack wasn’t built from success.
It was uncovered from failure.
That is the invisible pattern behind many billion-dollar outcomes.

Every company will fail at something.
Few have the discipline to pivot toward truth.
Even fewer build systems that scale what they discover.
