I equip leaders and teams to perform under pressure, without burning out.

My journey started with a question: what separates people who perform at their best under pressure from those who struggle and slip? I've chased the answer for two-decades, first as a full-time racing cyclist (not the most talented, but relentlessly curious), then through a PhD studying how elite performers think and execute when the stakes are high.

That path took me to Formula 1. As former Chief Innovation Officer for the performance coaching company behind 19 F1 World Championships, I helped develop methods that support clarity and execution when time is tight and consequences are high.

I continue to work with F1 teams and elite performers today, so my insights come from the cutting edge, not the archive. I bring those insights into everyday business pressure: always-on work, change, ambiguity, conflict, and relentless pace, working with organisations like PwC, HSBC, and Mercedes-Benz through my consultancy, the Knowledge Work Lab.

And my understanding of pressure isn't just professional. When I faced and fought back from cancer, I learned firsthand what high-stakes moments do to the mind and body.

After two decades studying elite and everyday performance, one truth keeps proving itself: people rarely struggle under pressure because they lack talent. They struggle because nobody trained them for that moment. That’s the work I do now, because:

Ever get to the end of a workday and think: “I’ve been so busy… and moved so little?”

That’s me, more often than I’d like.

I’ve taken a few days off to go skiing this week, and it’s made me appreciate something this activity does brilliantly:

It breaks up sitting with movement.

Yes, you sit on the lift, but it’s interrupted, again and again, by bouts of activity.

The problem with most workdays isn’t that we never exercise; many people still manage to squeeze in a workout.

The problem is that a heroic workout at the end of the day might not offset the health risks from a day of being sedentary (PMID: 26422244).

Also, consecutive days of excessive sedentary time seem to blunt the benefits when we get around to exercising.

A Journal of Applied Physiology study (PMID: 30763169) illustrates this.
Participants were sedentary for three days (<4,000 steps/day).

On day four, they did a solid one-hour moderate workout.

Normally, you’d expect improvements in triglycerides, blood sugar, and insulin response.

But after those sitting-heavy days, the usual markers barely moved.

The takeaway isn’t “don’t work out”; it’s to build your day like a ski trip: alternate chair time with movement.

5–10 minutes walking every 60–90 minutes

One walking meeting a day.

Take the stairs instead of the lift, if you can.

What ways have you found to break up sedentary time?

Missed a workout? Broke the diet? Skipped the meditation you swore you'd do every morning Congratulations. You're human.

I’m sure we can all relate to this.

The problem is not the lapse; it’s that we can make it into a verdict on our ability to translate any intentions into action.

One missed day becomes "I knew I couldn't do this." "What's the point?" "Might as well finish the biscuits."

And just like that, a stumble becomes a surrender, but the research points to a better way.

For example, people with higher self-compassion seem less emotionally derailed by day-to-day fluctuations in progress (Hope et al., 2014).

They treat lapses as information, not a catastrophe, and that helps them get back on track faster.

In other words, being kind to yourself isn't soft. It's strategic.

Perfectionism says, "You failed. Start again on Monday."

Progress says, "You missed one. What's next?"
One keeps you stuck in the guilt spiral. The other keeps you moving.

So, next time you slip (and you will, because you're not a robot) try to talk to yourself like you'd talk to a friend who's trying their best.
