The most important decision you make in your life is who your partner is.

You spend the most of your time with them

They raise a child with you

They become your main support system.

This year is our 10th Valentines Day together.

In that time I’ve scaled a company from 20 people to over 250.

Navigated a pandemic running that business 

Exited that company.

Rolled the dice and went again starting another business. 

All while knowing I’ve got someone in my corner who’s my biggest cheerleader.

There’s no way I could do any of this, and raise a child without the support she brings.

Relationships are team games and my advice to anyone is to make sure you have the best player possible on your team.

As someone who has been vocal over ways I personally believe Labour & Keir Starmer could have chosen different policies to drive growth in the UK, I deeply believe that his time is almost up.

But, this is a warning, in the last 12 months - even thought economic activity hasn't been as positive as I believe it could be we've had stability which has allowed businesses to plan and look at ways they can grow.

To now throw a potential PM contest and undoubtedly another general election and ruin that stability is not worth it.

Keir Starmer is the best of the current bad bunch, largely because he has the electoral mandate to govern.

No one else, not Angela Raynor, Not Andy Burnham, Not Wes Streeting hold that mandate - given to him through a democratic process.

I believe, it's in our best interest as a nation to have stability and not take this country down a dangerous path.

Because I promise you, what is currently waiting in the wings is significantly worse than what we current have.

If Keir was forced out, we would have had 6 Prime Minister in as many years.

No company that has 6 CEO's in 6 years would be in a good shape with any long term vision. 

I believe I use my voice to state what I think is best for us all, right now that is standing by our current PM.

UK Unempolyment has hit a 5 year high.

An increase of 0.1%

In this article, I showcase how 0.1% cost the UK taxpayer at least £540m per year.

While it doesn't feel like a lot 0.1% is signifcant.

Especially as the direction of travel is only one way.

Unless we make radical changes, we are going to continue to see this figure raise.

The losers in all this, are young people. 

The increase in mininum wages, raise of NI and growth of AI have seen young people lose out. 

Because a lot of people see young people as a risk when hiring and currently the cost isn't worth the risk.

We've had over 2,000 people apply to be an apprentices. 

From the data I've analysed

The youngest is 16 years old.

The oldest was 49 years old.

The average (mean) age was 22 years old.

~33% have graudate degrees.

The average candiate has 2 years relevant industry experience. 

So far we have almost 25 Businesses taking apprentices but we need more.

The problem, some people still think that apprentices are there to make cups of coffee and fetch lunches.

Those applicants I have talked to, they've got skills which businesses are crying out for.

Especially in social media, content creation and podcasting. Young people are ahead of the industry in many sectors, every business needs to be look at how they bring in younger people into their marketing, comms and operations - as they are the individuals with skills businesses need to adapt to AI and our content lead world.

My advice to all businesses... Hire an apprentice this year!

Last week Hollie started working with me as an apprentice.

A lot of people think an apprentice is someone who spends the first few months making teas in the office and adding little value.

That perception is totally wrong.

Because here’s the truth: if you’ve got a phone and someone who knows how to use it, you can build a serious content engine.

No fancy studio.
No expensive camera kit.
No complicated set-up.

A modern content team can be:
A smartphone
A simple plan

Someone with taste, consistency, and the confidence to press record

That’s it.
And apprentices are perfect for this moment.

They’re digital natives. They learn fast. They’re coachable. They’re hungry. 

When you give them real responsibility, not pretend tasks, they can start producing outputs that move the needle within days.

Which matters, because zoom out for a second.

In the UK we’ve got around 1,000,000 young people who are NEET, not in education, employment, or training.

That’s not just a statistic.

That’s a million futures on pause.

 A million people losing confidence and momentum.

 A million people who could be learning a skill, earning a wage, and building a career right now.

And while that’s happening, most businesses I speak to are saying the same thing.

We need more content.
We need better content.
We don’t have the time.
We can’t afford a full team.
You don’t need a full team.

You need a phone and someone who knows how to use it.

And you need the willingness to back a young person properly.

Give them structure
Give them training
Give them standards
Give them feedback
Give them reps
Give them belief

That’s why I’m excited to work with Hollie.

People think great founders just figure it out themselves.
That’s usually not what actually happens.

This is me with Ali Sarraf, one of Ocushield’s earliest angel investors.

On paper, he’s a Senior Product Manager at Google, looking after a password manager used by millions.

In reality?

He’s been one of those people who quietly changed how we build.

I remember when we started working on our online eye screening.

New space for us.

Healthcare meets tech meets product.

Loads of unknowns.

I didn’t need hype.

I needed someone who’d already walked through the kind of problems we were about to hit.

Ali never came in with big lectures.

He’d just ask the one question that made everything stop for a second.

“Why now?”
“What outcome are we really trying to create?”
“Are you building for real people… or just features?”

Sometimes annoying 😅

Always right.

That’s the thing about good mentors and investors.

They don’t hand you a playbook.

They help you see what actually matters.

Looking back, some of our best decisions came from moments where he simply helped us slow down and think clearly.

It’s a good reminder that the right investors don’t just bring capital.

They bring perspective you don’t have yet.

What’s one lesson a mentor or investor taught you that’s stayed with you?

A 10-year-old emailed us asking what blue light was.

Not a complaint.
Not about a product.

But for a school project...

He wanted to understand how screens affect our eyes and sleep.

We could've sent a quick link and moved on.

Instead, Kyle form our team jumped on a call and explained everything in simple language, no jargon, just a real conversation.

A week later we received a thank you message.

He'd nailed his presentation.
Now his whole class understood blue light better too.

And it made me pause and realise.

Cos moments like this quietly say a lot about how you build a business.

Some reminders it gave me:

1/ Education creates trust faster than selling ever will
People remember who helped them understand, not who tried to convince them.

2/ Small moments shape brand reputation more than big campaigns
Most culture isn't built publicly it's built in private decisions.

3/ How your team behaves when there's no direct gain matters most
That's where real values show up.

4/ Impact doesn't always look commercial
Sometimes it's just helping someone feel smarter, clearer or more confident.

We spend a lot of time talking about growth strategies.

But honestly, things like this are the real foundation.

Showing up, taking the time, making things simple.

That's the kind of company I want Ocushield to be.

Eyesight appointments aren't really about eyesight.


I spent years working in hospital and community optometry before Ocushield.

What most people don't see is that when patients talk about their eyes, they're rarely just talking about their vision.

They're usually talking about...

Fear of losing independence.
Fear of something serious being wrong.
Fear of not being listened to.

You quickly learn that technical knowledge isn't enough.

You also need to:

1/ Slow down and really LISTEN
2/ Explain complex things in SIMPLE LANGUAGE
3/ Notice what someone isn't saying
4/ Create calm when someone feels anxious

Those skills followed me straight into business.

Without realizing it at the time, clinic shaped how I built Ocushield.

1/ Why education is just as important to us as products
2/ Why we focus so much on research and medical credibility.
3/ Why "good enough" has never really felt good enough
4/ Why we design for real people, not just market segments

Clinic taught me this:

Empathy isn't a soft skill.
It's a performance skill.

If you want people to trust you, whether as a clinician or a founder, they have to feel understood first.

Here's a tricky one. 2 people, same age, same daily routine same energy burn of around 2,400 calories.

So... who's healthier?

One starts their day with eggs and bacon, grabs pizza for lunch, snacks on fries, has steak for dinner and finishes with Greek yoghurt.

The other has granola and coconut yoghurt with banana, a smoothie and trail mix mid-morning, avocado toast with salmon for lunch, pasta and salad for dinner, and dark chocolate for dessert.

If you judged by appearance?

You'd probably pick the second.

It looks cleaner.
More "wellness".
More intentional.

But zoom out.

The first person is in a calorie deficit with high protein intake.

The second is in a significant calorie surplus, lower protein, and gradually building visceral fat.

It's a reminder:

What looks healthy isn't always what's actually healthy.

And this isn't just about food.

It's about teams.

In business, we often reward what looks productive:

1/ Back-to-back meetings.
2/ Busy slack channels.
3/ Late-night emails. 
4/ Long to-do lists.

It feels like effort. 
It feels like momentum.

But zoom out. 

Is the team is a "calorie deficit" or a surplus?

Are they spending more energy than they're recovering?
Are they overloaded with inputs but low on deep focus?
Are they busy... but not building?

Cos in business:

✅ Output matters, not just activity.
✅ Recovery drives performance.
❌ “Healthy-looking” busyness can still create long-term burnout.

Just like nutrition, productivity has fundamentals:

Clarity, focus, boundaries, sustainable energy.

And here's the nuance.

The second person in the food example is getting more fibre and micronutrients.

The first could make smarter swaps.

With balance, either could thrive.

Same with teams.

You don't need to eliminate meetings.
You don't need to kill Slack.
You don't need to cut ambition.

But you do need to measure what actually drives results.

So here's the real question:

Is your team optimized for aesthetics... or outcomes?

Don't judge health or productivity by how it looks. Judge it by sustainability, energy, and long-term performance.

We charge our phones before they hit 5%.


But we ignore our own signs of running low.

Eyes stinging?
“Keep pushing.”

Brain fog?
“Must be stress.”

Headaches at your laptop?
“Probably dehydration.”

Here’s the problem.

In screen-heavy work, fatigue rarely arrives as a shutdown.

It shows up as:

Reduced focus.
Slower decisions.
More re-reading.
More mistakes.

Small signals that quietly compound across the day.

And over time?

That cognitive load doesn’t just affect comfort.

It affects performance.

Chronic workplace stress has been shown to impair concentration, decision-making and reaction time, directly impacting day-to-day performance. (Health & Safety Executive UK)

If your eyes are working harder to process information, your brain is too.

Which means energy that could go into:

Problem solving.
Creativity.
Decision-making.
Is instead being used just to see clearly.

We’ve normalised pushing through visual strain as “being committed”.

But in reality?
Recovery protects output.

Taking a break.
Resetting your focus.
Isn’t stepping back from performance.

It’s protecting it.

Still a work in progress for me too…

But worth every effort.

What small signal have you been ignoring lately?

Culture discussions, always high on the agenda. Right?
Well - stop overcomplicating it.

It’s not perks.
It’s not slogans.
It’s not “we’re like a family” posts.

It’s stuff like this:

1. Turning up on time
2. Saying people’s names
3. Saying “thanks for waiting” instead of “sorry I’m late”
4. Actually doing what you said you’d do
5. Asking “What do you think?” and meaning it
6. Giving credit loudly
7. Taking the blame, passing the praise
8. Replying quickly, even just “Got it”
9. Saying why you’re thankful, not just “thanks”
10. Celebrating small wins, not just big ones
11. Staying curious instead of critical
12. Letting people finish their sentence
13. Watching your tone, especially in messages
14. Not gossiping. Ever.
15. Bringing solutions, not just problems
16. Checking in on the quiet ones
17. Being steady, not moody
18. Respecting people’s time outside work
19. Owning mistakes without spinning them
20. Being human… birthdays, baby news, bad days and all

Boring? Maybe.
Powerful? Definitely.

Cos when people feel respected in small ways,
they show up differently in big ways.

Culture is just repeated behaviour.

Which of these do you think leaders forget the most?

When did working through lunch become a sign of commitment instead of overload?

Cos that's the real risk. 

No stress itself. 
But stress that starts to feel "normal".

You can usually spot it in 3 areas:

Behavioral. Physical. Emotional.

But behaviour is often the first signal.

For example:

1/ Reaching for your phone and checking emails or Teams almost immediately after waking up.
2/ Working outside contracted hours without taking that time back.
3/ Skipping breaks. Eating at your desk. Working though lunch.

On the surface, it looks productive. 

In reality? 

It's often a boundary problem.

And boundaries protect recovery. 

The data backs this up:

1/ 70%+ of employees check email outside working hours (APA Work & Well-Being Survey)

2/ After an interruption, it takes an average of 23 minutes to refocus (University of California, Irvine research)

3/ Taking short breaks improves performance and reduces mental fatigue (University of Illinois study on attention restoration)

4/ Chronic workplace stress is linked to increased MSK pain and long-term absence (HSE UK & CIPD Health & Wellbeing reports)

When people stop taking breaks, stop switching off, and blur the line between work and home...

The brain never properly resets.

And without recovery, performance drops.

Focus narrows.
Decision-making slows.
Patience shortens.

The insight?

Stress overload doesn't usually arrive dramatically.

It creeps in quietly.

As "just being busy".
As "just being committed".
As "just one more email".

The real leadership skill today isn't just driving output.

It's noticing when overload is becoming culture.

Politics aside... UK-China relations just shifted, and founders should be paying attention.

While most headlines focus on politics...

I look at signals.

Cos behind every political headline there's usually a business trend already moving.

Here's what caught by attention:

1/ UK-China goods trade hit $103.7B (£80B+) recently.
2/ UK investment into China surged significantly last year
3/ The latest visit resulted in £2.2B in export deals and £2.3B in market-access wins for UK businesses.

But here's the part most people aren't talking about...

What were the actual deals?

A few examples:

1/ China agreed to halve tariffs on Scotch whisky, from 10% to 5%, estimated to add around £250M to UK exporters over five years.

2/ A new UK–China services partnership launched, aimed at making it easier for British firms to operate in China and potentially paving the way for a future services trade deal.

3/ UK energy company Octopus Energy signed a joint venture to trade renewable power in China, targeting huge scale over the next decade.

4/ And major players like AstraZeneca announced multi-billion long-term expansion plans tied to China’s manufacturing and research ecosystem.

Those examples matter.

Not because of politics.

Because they show where confident and capability are flowing.

And founders should always watch where momentum is quietly building.

I've learned this first-hand building Ocushield.

Supply chains, manufacturing, innovation, research... none of it lives in isolation anymore.

When relationships between major economies shift, it changes:

1/ Access
2/ Costs
3/ Speed
4/ Opportunity

And often... the founders paying attention early are the ones best positioned later.

One thing I've noticed:

Big shifts rarely feel dramatic in real time.
They look subtle.
Small policy changes.
New agreements.
Quiet investment moves.

Then suddenly... the whole landscape feels different. As founders, our job isn't to react to noise.

It's to notice patterns early.

Did you know that you might already have digital eye strain... and not realise it?


Seriously.

If you work on screens all day and get headaches, tired eyes, blurry vision...

Or that moment where you suddenly need to refocus the screen...

That's likely eye strain.

And here's the crazy part...

According to American Optometric Association, up to 65% of people working on screens experience digital eye strain.

So basically... most offices.

Yet companies still talk about DSE like it's just compliance.

Forms, assessments, tick the box.

But during our 2nd webinar of "The Screen Time Effect" series with Posturite Ltd, Katharine Metters said a very important message.

Those regulations exist for a simple reason.

If people are distracted by pain or can't see clearly, they won't work well.

Obvious, right??

But it's easy to underestimate cos people just push through it.

So DSE isn't really about compliance.

It's about something much simpler.

Helping people see comfortably enough to do their job properly.

Funny how that improves productivity too.

The real reason I shop at Aldi has nothing to do with money...


It's about saving mental energy.

After a full day of decision-making at work, the last thing I want is to walk in a supermarket that expects more from my brain. 

And I think that's where Aldi's growth is really coming from.

Cos modern work has made cognitive fatigue normal.

By the time most people finish their day, they've already made hundreds of decisions.

Emails, meetings, slack messages, deadlines...

"What's for dinner?"
"Should I reply now or tomorrow?"

So when you walk into a store with 17 cereal options and 12 types of hummus...

It's not empowering, it's exhausting.

Aldi does 3 very simple things differently.

1/ Fewer choices

Less range means fewer micro decisions.

Which reduces mental load at the exact moment people are most decision-fatigued.

2/ Faster navigation

You don't need to think about where things are.

You just move through the space with minimal friction.

2/ Predictability

You know what to expect.

Which removes uncertainty from the experience.

None of this feels groundbreaking.

But that's the point.

It's not about price. It's about reducing cognitive demand in a world that constantly increases it.

Why does this matter?

Cos whatever industry you're in...

Your customer is likely decision-fatigued before they even interact with you.

Sometimes the best experience you can create is one that asks less from their brain.

If you consider one thing today, think about…
Your lighting in your home or office. 

One woman spent £50,000 fighting a light bulb.

No joke.

A resident in the UK reportedly spent around £50,000 in legal costs challenging an LED streetlight outside her home because it was so bright it was affecting her sleep and quality of life.

(Reported by BBC News and other UK outlets covering LED streetlight complaints.)

At first glance, that sounds extreme.

£50,000… over a light bulb?

But the story highlights something interesting.

LED lighting has transformed how we light our streets, offices and homes.

More energy efficient.
Longer lasting.
Brighter.
Much brighter.

In fact, modern LEDs can emit significantly higher levels of short wavelength artificial (blue) light, which researchers have linked to disruptions in sleep cycles and circadian rhythms when exposure happens at night.

Which means something as simple as lighting can have a surprisingly big impact on how we feel.

Sleep quality.
Eye comfort.
Even how alert we feel during the day.

It’s one of the reasons conversations around lighting, screens and eye health are becoming more important.

Because the environments we live and work in today are very different from even 20 years ago.

Screens everywhere.
LED lighting everywhere.
And our eyes are adapting to a world that’s changing very quickly.

That’s why at Ocushield we think about the bigger picture.

Not just screens.

But the entire visual environment people spend their days in.

Sometimes the smallest things… like a light bulb…

Turn out to have the biggest impact.
