It's about that time to let the world know I'm deaf. 

My data shows I haven't posted a video in over a year. 

I used to post videos once a week. 

I did it for one SIMPLE reason. 

To let the world know, or more specifically, my prospects know they were going to hopping on a call with a person who has a weird accent. 

And it worked. 

And then I got lazy and didn't want to post videos any more. 

Now, I've had a recent stretch lately where prospects have told me:

"I don't mean to insult you... but, are you deaf?" and we went on to talk about sign language. 

Another: "Is your mic broken? Because it's making you sound like Kermit the frog". 

No, my good sir, my mic is top of the line!

Yet another... "Has anyone told you that you sound like Mickey Mouse?"

No, my man... that's a first 😉 

So, here's my very belated PSA. 

Yes, I'm deaf. 

-- Had spinal meningitis when I was 18 months old. Burnt the ear nerves into crisp. 

-- I lost all balance for years. Touch me and I'd fall over. 

-- Went to speech school in Mississippi when I was in kindergarten.

-- I talk well for a deaf (as people tell me) because I wasn't born deaf and went to a pretty intensive speech school ran by very southern ladies.  

-- I'm what you call lower case deaf (as opposed to Deaf). So, not culturally deaf, grew up mainstream, no deaf exposure (no sign language). I'd run into Deafies much later in life, and found out that I wasn't deaf enough to be Deaf. Thought that was dumb. So I exited that culture. 

-- Learned sign language at 25 at grad school.

-- Married a deaf wife soon after. 

-- Taught K-12 to HEARING kids for 7 years(muahahah)

-- I don't think deafness is a superpower nor a tragedy. It is what it is. I don't know any other reality. I don't spend much time thinking about it unless I have to (like those calls). 

So, this post will accomplish a few things. 

1. Hopefully my sales calls will see this before we meet later today. 
2. Weeds out people who'd have a problem with it (win win)
3. Reminds me I should prolly get back on video

You finally have time set for that romantic dinner date with your spouse.  Her favorite location, the smell of butter, garlic, and wine wafting from the kitchen as you imagine a plate of Veal Parmigiano.  The maitre’d seats you and you open the menu as you feel a familiar buzz from your jacket pocket….
Your phone ringing.  It's work…again.

You missed another of your son’s soccer games.  His dejected gaze at his shoes when you explain, it carves at your soul.  That look from your wife….all too familiar.

You also build trust through vulnerability - sharing some of the hidden things in the ‘facade’.

What are the things that you lose sleep over? What are you working on to be a better leader?

Vulnerability requires a lot of courage but it brings humanity into the leadership equation.

When you have gained enough trust, you may start to learn about “blindspots”.

In my last post, we talked about blindspots….negative or positive, they represent opportunity.

A workplace with trusted relationships allows for exploration into the “unknown”.

When you are consistently expanding the arena by shrinking the other three quadrants….I would wager your results will be strong.

It may seem oversimplified to think about this with a 2x2 matrix.

But if you really think about it….does leadership need to be more complicated than this?
