Developed by a UC Berkeley Professor of Computer Science, Klothed is a patent-pending SaaS platform enabling virtual clothing try-ons for consumers, using generative AI and machine learning. Shoppers could make informed decisions prior to purchasing, helping eliminate friction, improving conversion, while reducing emissions and textile waste. 

Following a $1,800,000 pre-seed raise, my responsibility was overseeing all business operations, GTM (go-to-market) strategy and strategic initiatives. 

Highlights: Developed our brand strategy, content, launched our closed beta, managed six-figure budgets, landed two strategic partnerships, and crafted investor decks that secured $1,200,000 in LOIs before our co-founders decided to exit.

One of the (many) things that attracted me to Artie? The office right in the heart of the San Francisco Financial District. 

The energy and buzz are palpable in SF right now. And the there has been a significant decrease in the amount of feces on the sidewalks (nice work, Mayor Lurie). 

It makes it easy to get together with folks like 💜 🔮 Will Allred when they are in town. I've known him for years and been a happy, repeat customer of Lavender 💜🔮 www.ora.im. 

But it is different when you can sit down in-person- completely different vibe than Zoom. And coffee and chocolate chip cookies are often involved.

I got a master class in partnerships last week and all it cost me was the price of a cup of coffee....

I, finally, sat down in person with the one and only Nelson Wang. I initially met Nelson when he was building out the world-class partnership program at Airtable. My then current company was trying to sell to him but they ended up choosing a different vendor. 

Here's the cool part- Nelson was incredibly generous in sharing why we fell short and how we could improve. That was super valuable. Even cooler was the relationship that Nelson and I developed. 

Partnerships are a secret weapon for early stage companies. They can also be extremely dangerous if done incorrectly. I've seen companies pour massive time and resources into partnerships with big names (IBM, Accenture, etc.) and get absolutely nothing in return. 

Nelson's partnership principles are the foundation for how you build partnerships that actually make $$$$ for everyone involved. That's why he has become the go to person for all things partnerships and why people flock to him. 

Shockingly, both Nelson and I failed to take a selfie during our coffee so I had to create an AI generated version......

I’m moving at Godspeed.

It’s a little mantra I tell myself every day.

It’s from my favorite Zach Bryan song. I’m not a big country music fan but his music lands with me. And taking my daughters to his concert last fall majorly upped my aura points (allegedly)….

But that line just plays in my head. It isn’t a particularly religious thing for me.

It is a reminder that things in life happen at a certain pace. Maybe not as quickly as we want.

But I believe that we are all placed on this Earth for a purpose. And we keep moving towards that purpose, enduring the twists and turns along the way. 

Part of that journey is finding work that you find meaningful and doing it alongside people you enjoy being with. I’ve found that has a high correlation with my overall happiness in life.

And on this beautiful Friday morning, I’m moving at Godspeed. And I wish you all the same.

Regardless of how strong or weak the job market, hiring needs to be a two way street built on mutual trust. 

Jacqueline Cheong asked me for two references. I gave her four because I wanted her to have a true sense of who I am and what it is like to work with me- both the good and the bad (should have told Melanie Brancaleone, MS, MBA she maybe didn't need to share all of the bad things)....

I asked Jacqueline if I could speak to one or two of Artie's customers to understand their perspective (David Stokey gave me a great reminder on the value of doing this). So, of course, she connected me with four customers!

All 4 customers were incredibly candid with me but had amazing things to say about the team and the platform. They mentioned the incredible speed with which new features were rolled out. But the biggest takeaway was that it took away an operational burden that they no longer had to think about- the ability to have real time data replication for their critical data. It said a lot that four extremely busy people were so quick to set up time with me and so thoughtful in sharing information with me. 

And, in the small world department, I got to talk with customer #1- Mike Cohen from Substack. It just happens that Lenny Rachitsky had reached out years ago to Mike to help an early investor perform due diligence on Artie. Lenny was so impressed that he also became an early investor. And he happens to be the same person who originally introduced me to Jacqueline a couple of years ago. Boom- full circle!

It's been an incredible (and at least a tiny bit overwhelming) first week at Artie. But I'm so appreciative of everyone who has been so kind and generous in helping me get up to speed. You never know how things will play out, but it sure feels like a great decision to join.

Want the secret cheat code for how to pick companies that will be successful? 

Over index on CEOs who hugely care about solving problems for their customers.  

I'm not saying that they have bland mantras about how customers matter. You want a CEO who rolls up her sleeves and hears hard feedback from customers. What sucks about the current platform? What have they been neglecting that is extremely frustrating? 

I'll give you a few examples of CEOs who I have seen walk this walk. 

At HelloSign, one of our core values was: "Make our users awesome." Even though I helped shape the rest of our core values, that is the only one I still remember (sorry but love ya Gina Lau 🤣 ). 

Joseph Walla was fanatical about making our users awesome- it guided every decision that we made. He'd hop on calls, answer support tickets, doing anything that was needed to make things better for our users.

Trunal B. created Clazar to solve a problem that he had lived- how to scale and manage the Cloud marketplaces. He is obsessive about making sure the platform is constantly improving in a way that benefits the customers. He is incredibly generous with his time and knowledge and that is a big part of his feedback loop. 

And I've admired from afar how Christina Brady is building Luster- filling the massive gap in employee enablement by blending AI with a human touch. Companies spend so much time screening to hire the right people- then they throw them to the wolves and hope they will be successful in their job. And are shocked when it doesn't work. 

Christina's mission is to give every company the opportunity to provide their employees with a world-class enablement. And I've witnessed as month after month they iterate and improve the product at Luster. It is light years ahead of where it was only a year ago!

I will always bet on CEOs like these three who are fanatical about digging in deeply and serving customers.
