On Sunday we joined a group of Portuguese hikers in the hills near Sintra.
No agenda. No laptops. No noise.

And somewhere between the olive trees and the storm clouds, something clicked.

Most founders and CMOs I speak with tell me the same thing.

I finally got my first 1-star review.
And honestly… it made my day.

Someone wrote that The Future CMO “is not real marketing” because it doesn’t follow the old segmentation-research-textbook flow.

Exactly.
That was intentional.

Future-ready marketing is not the 1995 playbook.
 It’s AI.
 It’s trust.
 It’s narrative.
 It’s visibility.
 It’s speed.
 It’s community.
 It’s what the CMO role is becoming.

And here’s the funny part.

The review appeared right after my Black Friday free promo ended.
Someone grabbed the book without paying a cent, didn’t like that it challenged their worldview, and then decided to lecture me on what “real marketing” should be and even claiming the book's “true aim” is to book you into a retreat in Portugal.

(For the record: Sintra Synergies gets one mention in the author bio.
 If that counts as a sales funnel, I need to revisit my tactics.)

Meanwhile…

Philip Kotler called it the best book he ever read about the CMO role.

So if someone hands out a 1-star rating because the book didn’t match their decades-old framework… I can live with that.

In fact, it proves the point.

When you challenge outdated thinking, not everyone will clap.
And that’s okay.

The future belongs to CMOs who adapt, not to those who get angry when a free book doesn’t confirm what they already believe.

I just found out something unexpected 🤩

While I was doing follow-up for my Sintra Synergies retreat, I noticed my book 'The Future CMO' had been included in a recommended reading list for marketers.

"37 Books That Should Be on Every Marketer’s TBR List in 2026" by Content Marketing Institute (author: Ann Gynn)

So I took a closer look at the list… and realised something special.

These aren’t random authors.
These are people I’ve learned from, collaborated with, interviewed on the podcast, shared mastermind calls with, or exchanged ideas with over the past years.

• Mark Schaefer – whose thinking shaped entire chapters of my own work

During CCCC I had the chance to speak with Dirk, co-founder of CUDIS, and ask him one simple question: “What is CUDIS?”
