8 years ago I made the best decision of my life...



I had just finished University but there was only one thing on my mind - to travel the world.

I left the UK for what I intended to be a year of experiential learning, however, after nearly a decade away from my home country, the learning has never stopped.

After landing in Madrid 5 years ago, I started coaching CEO- level executives using tailored business English language. Teaching was never something I was passionate about but I enjoyed the business aspect.

I had business knowledge combined with teaching experience so I started my own small Business English academy with a focus on marketing and growing the business.

Whilst working 10 hours a day as a Growth Marketer at Wayra, Telefonica, I spent an extra 2 hours in the evening working on my academy - Cordli.

The hard work paid off.

My academy doubled year on year until after 4 years, I had 100 students with one of the biggest banks in Spain.

Then the pandemic hit. Another pivot.

After 5 years of working in marketing and growth, I wanted to add another skill to my arsenal - sales.

I started working for a B2B sales consultancy.

We created a peer learning platform for sales professionals to network, learn, and grow together through expert masterclasses, virtual roundtables, and peer-to-peer sessions. I've personally grown our community to 5000+ members in 50+ countries.

The journey so far has hugely influenced who I am now. 

I will continue to strive to discover new skills, gain new experiences, and ultimately never stop learning.

1) Part of the week I focus on enterprise sotware solutions and part of the week I focus on helping directly, including refugees and people in palliative care.

2) For more than a year I focused on VR / AR / XR throughtout the world. It was fun and a huge learning curve. It is a very specific type of hardware and software. In the end I decided (with Krazio Cloud) to go global with enterprise sales solutions, which has a wider scope.

3) Global technology sales. Extensive experience with hardware and software (SaaS) with a focus on MRR and ARR sales. Document management solutions, learning management, e-commerce, location data, eID infrastructure and tokens, development and outsourcing, video call software, ATS, CRM, Whatsapp, data analytics, AI and low/no code. And experience in sales outsourcing for technology companies. 

4) Rich history in HR, recruitment and executive search with a diverse background. Many years as one of the leading executive search firms in networking and security throughout EMEA, APAC and South America. Edge networking in the telecom and service provider market. Enterprise networking and senior positions at telecom, security and software companies. Next to our global practice we were experts in the MENA region. 

5) Good causes are an important way of giving back. I was the CMO and Lead fundraiser at Swbb. I've helped WWF and the Green Left in the Netherlands and today I focus on helping humans directly. I believe we need more people in this line of "business". 

6) Huge fan of networking communities. My focus is on technology sales communities. I've been Brand Ambassador at Saleshookup from the beginning and it is one of the best tools out there! I am also member of Tenbound, this keeps me in touch with the new and leading software companies from Silicon Valley. 

7) Last but not least is Servturn a Nevstrai company. This organization has one of the few global mentorship practices around. I've been able to help people for over 6 years and it has been something I am forever grateful for!

Sales as a by-product is the best you can get. 

The two or more activities are mutually beneficial. 

Tequila brand here and a shoe line there. A singing gig or an acting gig.  The Iphone started as by-product as well.

My favorite example is Justin Hawkins.

Talented musician, full of humor, one of the best rock bands of the moment. The Darkness.

He does a podcast about everything and anything rock, from indie to alt punk. Always with the intro tune and a laugh. 

This is a golden combination. 

The Darkness have released quite a few albums and tour regularly.

I love music. I listen to it as much as possible and I like going to concerts. I like talking about it and record stores are one of my favorite places to go in the city. The whole process excites, from using a streaming service to listening to 65 year old vinyl. It is a doorway to a beautiful world!

Kids are picking it up as well. These days young people are buying CDs. There is a huge second hand market, starting at € 3.50. Or of course vinyl for a little more. 

When I was a kid I listened to a lot of 60s bands. Kids today listen to a lot of 80s bands like Guns N Roses and Nirvana. 

You have to be smart if you are into rock in this day and age.

Making money is difficult. Pearl Jam fought for it (against ticket prices). Metallica fought against it (streaming services). Big business always won.

Being a rock star only works if you are a business man first.  Otherwise you will not survive. 

Most business advisors would advise against a life in music. 

I had the chance to release a record and go touring, but I decided against it. This was a long time ago. When you think back and realize the chances you had, that's when you realize luck exists.

Find meaning in what you do.

I'm not thinking back and hurting.

I'm looking at what I have now and there is meaning all around me and in me... When I go to a concert I get goose bumps.

You can go as deep as you want to. Music as a hobby is the best!

What would be your by-product to survive?

I'm excited to start my new career...

Krazio Cloud is my only Nevstrai client at the moment, but we are in talks for more.

I started in October at the Palliative care unit Liduina at one of the Laurens hospitals in Rotterdam. The patients and staff have been more than kind to me. It is of course  difficult space in nursing, but all the patients talk about  life, like we should. And it doesn't matter how simple it was life is awesome! That was my first lesson. Suzanne Slob is my manager and Robert Sio is the organizer!

Then I went through a long process with VluchtelingenWerk Nederland. They are very meticulous with new hires, Wick van Aken got me through the first stages. I will be coaching refugees in Rotterdam. I think refugees are the lifeblood of a country. Only my father was born in the Netherlands no other parent or grandparent. I understand adapting to a country. I used to have a different nationality as well. 

My barber is Syrian and why not. We speak with are hands and with a few English / Dutch / Arabic words. His Dutch is getting better. He is so grateful for living in this country!

Last but not least I'm also finding a new part-time sales position in technology. And finally something is really happening and looks like it could be the best way to keep my sales career going!

So I will not be working full-time. How do I do that? Time management. Finally I will have the combination of work that I have dreamed of.

Does anything good ever happen on social media?

Why are we polluting lower space with rockets made by crazy billionaires? While India went on a mission to Mars for half price...

What do I say about AI... For your brains it is healthier to smoke. Where are we going with this?

Why are we still holding nuclear tests? Why have we stopped breaking down the arsenal?

Why are we killing the next generations. The climate isn't magically going to get better.

We can end all wars, why don't we?

Your favorite writers are something special in your life. They bring you entertainment and knowledge... a story that goes beyond the next level.

Since high school I have found the books of Paul Auster. Since then in every fibre of my being Paul Auster has been an example. I always find solace in reading his books. They don't always end well, but that is something only the best can do.

My relationship with Paul has been going for 30 years. To understand a book, you need to let yourself go and let the book take you on a journey. 

The stories I've witnessed thanks to Paul have been amazing. The Music of Chance (forget all the things after the book) is a classic on the level of the best writers ever. 

Paul has always stayed in Brooklyn, his love. But go find out for yourself.... His books are not for everyone, but they have saved me time and again. 

I'm currently reading several books, but Baumgartner by Paul Auster is perhaps his last book and I have been thinking about a moment to read it. 

With your favorite writers you do have some sort of relationship. When Iain M. Banks (I had been reading since the 80s) died in June 2013 a small part of me died with him.

Perhaps not necessarily a friend, but reading has so much meaning and writers like these are hard to find. They carry you for decades.

Paul Auster said:

“When a person is lucky enough to live inside a story, to live inside an imaginary world, the pains of this world disappear. For as long as the story goes on, reality no longer exists.”

What is the first thing we need to think about in case of armies and some space race thrown in?

Ammunition... bullits, rockets, bombs (smart and regular) drones and so much more...

Most armies have a limited supply of ammo. Would the war in Sudan continue with just machetes and swords? Probably it would, so then you stop the water supply and the war ends within a few weeks. 

Would the Israeli's have continued with just daggers? Most probably not. So all you need to do is stop the ammo suply.

Russia / Ukraine, pretty much the same but the ammo supply is in hands of criminals (Russia). The weird thing is we know all the criminals and we do nothing. Even this war could end soon. Why do we keep supplying death when we could end it in a matter of days. 

And that is even without a military invention. Warren Buffet could do this by changing his investments by just a few percent, probably much less. Don't let his smiles deceive you. 

Space the final frontier and yet it is not. SpaceX was built for the illegal action of shooting a rocket of another country out of the sky. Not to go to the Moon or Mars.

The next phase is building a rocket screen / shield for the US. Again this is the focus of SpaceX. Sure we will reach the Moon again or Mars, but don't let yourself be fooled.

Space is not a humanitarian mission. The goal is the special metals on the Moon and Mars and every space faring nation wants a base on the Moon... but first as I explained we shoot satelites that we don't like out of the sky.

It was long ago in another life. 

The Grampians in Australia really made a huge impression. 

I too have meditated on the rock with a view. 

At the time I had decided to become a meditation teacher. 

It was part of a 1500 km road trip through South Australia. 

4 guys with dreams of life.

Most of my travels through Asia, Australia and New Zealand were done on my own, but sometimes it was fun to go with one or more friends. 

From the golden Buddha in Thailand to the bush in Australia to the gletsjers in New Zealand.

The first year of my travels was good. Friends for life, so much different landscapes, complete with strange predators and humid jungles. And some of favorite cities of all time. The southern light during Christmas was a spiritual awakening of sorts. 

But that rock is one of the first places I think of. That view is fabulous. 

What came after was more travel, university (also in Australia), some jobs and the start of my "true" career.

I had meaning. I believed and I was full of youthful hope.

Most of those things are now in the past. I did go very far with meditation and studied it deeply, but I let it go just like a thought during meditation. 

Certain things are working out now, that haven't in a while.

I think the journey is worth sharing (even without the darker edges). 

The meditating man on the rock symbolizes that you are always in a state of meditation. When you realize that, a lot of the bad memories and thoughts go up in smoke. That is a good skill to have.
