I studied cinema. Not computer science.
 
I did study some business along the way, but the foundation? Film school.
 
And honestly, I think it's one of the best things that happened to my career in tech.
 
When I tell people I run a digital product studio, the first question is usually about my technical background. When I say "film school," people get a bit surprised.
 
But here's what studying cinema actually teaches you:
 
- How to tell a story.
- How to structure information so people feel something.
- How to direct attention.
- How to take a big, messy idea and distill it into something clear.
 
That's product development.
 
Every great product is a story. There's a protagonist (your user), a conflict (their problem), and a resolution (your solution). If the story doesn't make sense, the product won't either.

Something I keep noticing across our projects at Naviu:
 
The teams delivering the most impact are getting smaller.
 
Not because companies want to cut costs (though that helps). But because the tools have changed the math.
 
AI handles a lot of the repetitive work. One senior engineer with the right stack covers ground that used to take 3 or 4.
 
But the real advantage of small teams isn't speed. It's clarity.
 
Small teams don't lose weeks in alignment meetings. They don't write specs for the sake of writing specs. They talk to the customer, prioritise, and ship.
 
We work with non-tech companies and corporates who need digital products built fast. And the pattern is always the same: the moment you add unnecessary layers, momentum dies.
 
What works instead:
 
- A senior-led team that owns the problem end to end.
- Clear checkpoints, not endless handoffs.
- Iteration based on what's real, not what's in a slide deck.
 
This doesn't mean big teams are useless. It means that for most digital initiatives, you don't need 20 people. You need the right 5.
 
The companies that figure this out first will have a serious advantage.

Is AI making us go out of business?

I’ve been asked this a lot lately, and honestly, I’m feeling the exact opposite.

We’re seeing more and more non-technical businesses that finally see a path to building their own software to scale operations.

The vibe coding era is changing the starting line:

👉 Better Prototypes: Clients show up with functional AI prototypes they built themselves.
👉 Clearer Vision: Because they’ve already "played" with the logic, they know know better what they need.
👉 Faster Execution: Internally, we’re using AI assisted tools to ship complex apps at a speed that wasn't possible two years ago.

I think we’re seeing the Jevons Paradox at play.

As the cost of building software drops, the demand doesn't decrease, it increases. As the barrier to entry lowers, there are simply more opportunities to build.

But here’s the catch: as coding becomes a commodity, the craft becomes more valuable.

Just because everyone has a powerful camera in their pocket doesn't mean everyone can be the new Steven Spielberg.

The machines are writing a lot of the code, but humans are still the ones telling the story.

Your digital initiative stalled. Again.
 
And I bet it wasn't because the technology was wrong.
 
After working on dozens of digital products for corporates, I keep seeing the same pattern. The projects that fail almost never fail because of tech.
 
They fail because of:
 
- No clear owner. Everyone is "involved," nobody is accountable.
- No defined success metric. The team builds features instead of solving a problem.
- Internal politics slowing every decision to a crawl.
 
The companies that actually ship? They do three things differently:
 
- They assign one person who owns the outcome. Not a committee. One person.
 
- They define what success looks like before writing a single line of code. Not "we need an app." More like "we need to reduce manual order processing from 4 hours to 20 minutes."
 
- And they bring in external partners not because they can't build internally, but because an outside team moves faster, challenges assumptions, and doesn't get stuck in org chart politics.
 
The tech is the easy part. Alignment is the hard part.
 
If your digital initiative is stuck, look at the org chart before you look at the tech stack.

One of the main reasons I switched to remote work is because it significantly reduces the microaggressions and discrimination that are often prevalent in physical workplaces, especially for Black women and minority communities.

In virtual settings, people are far less likely to say things like:
– “Cool hair. Can I touch it?”
– “You speak really good English… for a foreigner.”
– “You look too young to work here.”
– “I’m not racist. I have Black friends.”

In five years of freelancing and contracting, I’ve only been physically present in an office once.

During that visit, while waiting in a meeting room, I was told: “Sorry, this meeting room is booked - you can’t be here.” 

It was awkward, considering I was the new Programme Director. 🫠 

I’ve heard a lot in office environments. But I also know I’m not alone - and that others experience variations of this far more frequently and far more overtly.

These moments aren’t just uncomfortable - they are a form of gaslighting. Whether intentional or not, micro-aggressions reinforce systemic bias against historically marginalised groups.

This is why organisations cannot genuinely claim to be inclusive if flexible or remote working is not even an option.

Black people, women, and minority groups - in fact, everyone - deserve psychologically safe work environments, and remote and flexible work are fundamental to creating them.

Q. Which one are you checking in first?

I quit my job to get clarity. 5 years later and a fully remote career  - I think the pressure to “get clarity” is a scam.

The truth is, I thought I lacked clarity because my career was grounded in experimentation, fluidity and short-term bets.

I left a stable job. I moved industries. I worked remotely from Brazil to Jordan. I contracted and freelanced. I left again. I burned out. I launched a side hustle.

Some people thought I was directionless. Others thought I was brave.

The same person, same career - different interpretations of how “clear” I was. 

This is the problem with the concept of ‘getting clarity’: it’s vague and shaped by whatever definition of success we’ve absorbed.

So, instead of obsessing over whether I'm ✨clear enough ✨ about work & life, here's how I approach it now:

1️⃣ Practice pattern recognition.
↳ Looking backwards gives me evidence to build forward.

Instead of asking, "What's my big vision?", I look at the last 12 months and identify 2–3 patterns. When did I feel most like myself? What work & clients fired me up?


2️⃣ Define non-negotiables - then pressure-test the trade-offs.
↳ Short-term experiments to test my assumptions.

Most of us want the perfect overlap: high income, flexibility, no politics/stress. That rarely exists - all at once. So, I pick 2–3 non-negotiables for the season I'm in and test the rest. 


3️⃣ Let your metrics evolve.
↳ When the season shifts, my definition of progress shifts with it.

Some quarters are for growth. Others are for recovery, savings, relationships, or experimentation. Not every season is designed for scale or leads.


Clarity isn't something you achieve once and keep forever. It's contextual. It's seasonal. 

And it's completely yours - so move toward what feels aligned, even if it doesn’t translate into a neat LinkedIn headline.✨

5 years ago, I published my career pivot on LinkedIn. I had just quit my job, started freelancing and moved to Costa Rica for the Winter season.

Fast forward, I met people who became friends, built a community around remote work & got hired by clients I genuinely wanted to work with.

And somewhere along the way, this platform became the thread running through all of it - So here’s how I do it and what I’ve been learning so far:

✅ Fully remote & learning new rhythms
Moving from a high-intensity remote lifestyle to settling in France felt like a step back. In reality, it gave me something better: stability at home and freedom to travel on my terms.

✅ I work fast - but not alone
I’m not an AI-for-everything person. But I’m also not pretending I do it all alone.
I do the strategic heavy lifting myself and automate the repeatable backend.
I audit the work, track timing, and build systems around what’s predictable.

✅ Mess up, learn, refine, repeat.
Plans will fall through the cracks. Experiments won't always land. Assumptions will be wrong. That's not failure - that's data. Instead of spiralling, I ask: what broke, and how do I adjust so it doesn't happen the same way twice? Not every decision needs to be the right one. It just needs to move you forward.

Five years ago, I had no idea what would happen when I started writing in public. I still don't, honestly. But I'm grateful this platform gave me space to share all of it - the wins, the pivots, the full plate.

That's what makes it worth it. 🫶🏽

Since I went fully remote, I stopped hating Mondays.

Not because work got easier - but because life got more integrated.

Now, instead of jumping straight into emails, 
I step outside first & just breathe. 

Then I show up present for my remote teams & projects.

Because when I'm not frantic, they're not either.

Q. How do you kick off your week with intention?

Before we head into the weekend, here are some positive remote work headlines I gathered this week :

↳ A couple from Texas is building CoPlay, a $1.5M co-working space with built-in childcare for kids under 6 - so parents don’t have to choose between career growth and early childhood moments.

↳ M-KOPA, a fintech providing smartphone and e-mobility financing in emerging markets, raised $166M - and is now hiring 10 fully remote roles across Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa and select EU markets.

↳ Sri Lanka has launched a digital nomad visa for remote workers earning $2,000/month - with extension options, expanding global mobility.

↳ Harvard Business School is offering its “Remote Work Revolution” course free online (2–3 hrs/week, self-paced) - focused on building trust and relaunching distributed teams.

↳ Despite Nigel Farage calling WFH “nonsense,” 69% of Brits still want remote work options - prompting City AM to label the attack “vibes-based politics.”

↳ Automattic is backing a paid AI literacy program at the University of Illinois Chicago for 80 students - building GenAI projects on WordPress, earning $1,000 and gaining job placement eligibility.


There’s a lot of debate about whether remote work is “ending.” 

But while some argue about it, others are hiring, investing, building infrastructure, funding education, and expanding access. 

That’s the side of the story I’m following. 🥰

One of the hardest things I've been learning: being more than my job title.

For years, my identity has been built on roles. Senior Consultant at this cool company. Director on these projects. Fancy title, reputation, fun logo, repeat.

And when I went solo & remote and people asked "How are you?" I'd answer with daily rates and client wins.

Honestly, I'd wrapped so much of my identity in my career that I forgot I was a whole person.

But lately, the best conversations I've had start with work and then drift into:

↳ Our family history and how it shaped us  
↳ How we're actually building relationships in real life 
↳ The goals we're quietly working towards 
↳ What we're binge-watching or early World Cup predictions

Work is part of my story, not the whole book. So let me reintroduce myself:

Hi, I'm Rita. ✨ Yes, I run transformation programmes and coach digital & tech people into remote work. But I also:

↳ Just relocated to France and figuring out what "home" means again
↳ Play chess (humbling) and enjoy surfing (even more humbling) 
↳ Love football - Manchester United fan, yes I know, I know ✌🏽 
↳ Went through a breakup and I'm learning who I am outside of "we" 

The most interesting people I know can't be summed up in a LinkedIn headline. And neither can you. You're not just your photo on the org chart, your online status on Slack or another square on Zoom. You are a whole person carrying hobbies, stories, values and culture that shape your identity.

I love my work. But I'm learning how to be more than just what I do. How to build relationships that don't start with, "So what do you do?" How to ask better questions. And how to show up as a full human - messy bits included - and create space for others to do the same. ✨

Pivoting your career is risky. So is staying in one that drains you.

Committing to a 9–5 can burn you out. So could going all-in on contracting and freelancing.

There's risk in every direction. That's not the issue. The problem is pretending that one path is automatically safer - or braver - than the others.

I've changed direction plenty of times. Media to consulting. Permanent employment to freelancing. FMCG to automotive to tech. Big consultancies to startups.

Not one of those moves was a dramatic leap. Each was a deliberate shift - building on what came before, testing what might come next.

Before any career pivot, I ask myself:

→ Am I building on skills I already have - or starting from zero by choice?
→ Is this move expanding my options or narrowing them?
→ Am I pivoting all at once - or testing it in stages?

Gradual career pivots aren’t the timid version of brave. They’re what make sense when you’ve got rent, car payments, and responsibilities to think about.

And sometimes it’s about testing the move before making it permanent.
