Last night in Atlantic City, I saw Stevie Nicks in concert. I’ve seen her dozens of times, and somehow, it never gets old. I didn’t expect to feel everything as powerfully as the first time. But it’s what happened.

Stevie is far more than an icon. She is unshakably herself, on stage and in spirit.

At one point, she shared a story that I’ve heard before and it still reached right into the core of my heart. She told us how, even now, she’ll sometimes move her mattress onto the floor when she’s home to recreate the way she used to live when she was just starting out and struggling. She arranges a few familiar objects nearby, just like she did then. In doing that, she remembers: “I’m still Stevie.”

There was something so human about that story. It’s the same energy she drew from when she wrote “Gypsy.” When she sings it, she brings herself back to that sense of self and place, and delivers it with rawness, no matter how many years have passed.

These are the lessons I carry into my own life. In fact, her story made me recognize that, even at 56 and all the success I’ve enjoyed, I still do many things that I did in my early life. Can you relate to this, too? 

I can think of no better example of personal branding than Stevie Nicks. Her voice, message, and choices have remained steady and even strengthened over time. When she performs, the entire audience sings with her, note for note, syllable for syllable as a testament to her musical legacy. That’s the power of a resonant personal brand never in need of reinvention. She continues to reveal more of herself, and we are here for it.

Her signature style is part of that story. It’s not just an aesthetic; it’s an archive. She still wears the original shawls from her Bella Donna album cover. The oversized gold polka-dotted shawl from “Stand Back.” The gold lace one from “Gold Dust Woman.” She has preserved, cherished, and honored these original pieces and shares them with us.

More than costumes, they are her visual legacy. They stir memories longtime fans like me have carried for years. And they cast new spells on people who are just discovering her. Proud of this preservation, it’s part of how she tells her story, even without words.

At 77, her voice is strong, practiced, and unwavering. Her stage presence is still radiant. More than a performance, the concert was a spiritual experience. She told us stories, offered context, and gave us more than music. She invited us into her life, her process, and her private truths.

And this brings me back to what’s always made her so powerful. She is the real deal. It takes courage and self-trust to show up with that much presence. It takes a kind of confidence that comes from within and radiates outward. As a result, we’re still here — listening, watching, and learning.

After all these years, she continues to teach simply by being who she is.

Today, if my mom were still alive, she would have turned 83. It’s hard to imagine her at that age, since she died when she was 64. Even though cancer and the treatment that kept her going ravaged her body, the movies that play in my mind are not from the end. They’re from throughout her life as I knew her.

As a mother, she loved me with everything she had. I never wanted for more. And still, even now, almost 19 years since she passed, even though I can still feel her love, I find myself wanting it. That’s the orphaned child in me. So I remember. And I conjure up the energy of her love to feel it again.

Mom’s influence looms large in the best way. Both of my parents were Scorpios—expressive and demonstrative, but in different ways. I take after her more than my dad. She was the one people trusted with their secrets, and they were right to do so. If someone needed advice, she offered common sense, a clear eye, and an open heart. She saw the best in people and rooted for them to live the life they really wanted. She treated me exactly that way.

When I came out to her at 19, she had the simplest and most profound response. Be happy. That was it. Two words that told me she saw me, accepted me, and wanted good things for me.

Mom knew I had struggled as a child. She didn’t know the full extent of it because I protected my parents from the worst of that truth. But moms know. Even when we don’t tell them, they know. And that two-word manifesto has guided me ever since.

She didn’t say “be happier.” She wasn’t comparing me to anyone else or grading me on a curve. She knew there was a litmus test for happiness, and she wanted me to land on the plus side of the emotional ledger.

Later in her life, she taught me something else: strength. It wasn’t just about her battle with cancer. It was her will to live. She didn’t beat the disease, but she beat the odds. That’s what stays with me now—not the cancer, but her courage.

And I realize that, even during my own bouts of unhappiness, I’ve also been beating the odds. Every day we get to make choices. I’ve made some bold, even audacious ones. Both of my parents could be quite bold; yet I know that my form of boldness comes from her.

Even though I take responsibility for my self-image—how I see myself and how I show up—she gave me a beautiful example based on how she lived. She showed me what it looks like to live with conviction and warmth. She passed that on to me, and that is how I carry her with me every day.

So if you and I ever have a conversation, know this. My goal isn’t to sell you on anything I offer. It’s to sell you to yourself. To root for you. To want the best for you. It’s what Mom gave me in her lifetime. Even now, what she gave me still holds, and I have an endless supply to pass along.

That’s her legacy.

p.s. I’m posting this without a photo because, sometimes, the feeling of a person is more enduring than any image. That’s how it is with my mom.

I love this moment when my regular work calms down. There are always people to help, but the intensity mellows. When no one is panicking and there aren't urgent project deadlines or emergencies, I get busy. Building behind the scenes is a favorite activity because my creativity comes alive.

I recall my retail days. Some of my colleagues would stand idle around the department, waiting for someone to walk in, hoping to make the next sale. Not me. I was tending to my department so that it was in top shape for customers walking in. I refolded shirts, tidied up racks, and created breathing room between garments. It wasn't busywork; I was being intentional. Clients always approached me, drawn to the energy they noticed from my activity. They sensed that I was someone who would engage with them.

This moment now feels exactly like that: calm and full of creation.

Client work, of course, remains at the center. But I’ve also been revising my book manuscript. Distilling decades of experience into something others can carry with them is deep work. It has reaffirmed my convictions and offered me even greater clarity. I'm also preparing a webinar for a group of lawyers next week, focused on using one's presence and image to deepen trust. And I've drafted a full business plan for a new and exciting retail concept. It blends my image consulting ideas with luxury retail experiences. It feels like coming full circle, or more like coming home.

These pursuits speak to the same throughline. Sharing what I know, guiding those who seek transformation, and creating something bold and beautiful for what’s next. I love to have more than one focus, especially when they interrelate. It keeps me active and deepens my interests in learning, studying, guiding, and serving.

Just like back in the store, rather than standing by, I’m preparing the environment and bringing air and energy into the work. When someone walks in, they feel it.

Despite this being a season of harvesting, today feels like a seed-planting day. I'm feeling this way even though I can't quite see what the seed will become.

I met with an advisor from the New York Small Business Development Center. It was the kind of meeting that demanded one to speak his vision out loud, even when still holding it close.

I’m not ready to share the full shape of what’s next. But something inside me is shifting. Or maybe it’s settling into place at a deeper level than ever before. I’ve had this sensation before, usually right before everything changes. It's this low hum of certainty and a quiet knowing that I’m on to something that could be a real game changer.

The idea I brought into that meeting isn’t brand new. In many ways, it’s the natural extension of the last 41 years of my life. It draws from every year of experience, every lesson I’ve learned, and every truth I’ve stood for. Yet it will be quite different in the world, with a unique presence and its own address.

When I spoke about it today, it didn’t feel like a concept. It felt like a real place with dimension and soul... where people would walk in, feel embraced, and leave changed.

That’s the dream. And I’m building toward it.

It would be unfair to reveal it all before it’s ready.
But today felt like a beginning.

And when the time is right, I’ll have more to share — and a door to open.
