I've attended ~30 networking events in Toronto.

And I've realized I need to attend LESS of these.

Instead, I'm prioritizing more "niche" ones.

Here's why.

Usually, there's two types of mixers that I've seen.
1/ Generic networking events
2/ Niche-focused events

At any routine mixer or festival,

→ You meet people across different industries. That's good if you want cross-domain networking, but when you meet 50 people, only two or three actually fit within your category. And that's if you're lucky.

→ These feel one-off. There's no sense of community. No looking forward to the next one or wanting to meet the same people again.

→ The conversations get stuck on "What do you do?" "Oh, I do this." And that's where it stays.

This is exactly what niche events/conferences have gotten right.

They have multiple filters that someone goes through before attending.

Take SAAS NORTH Conference, for example. That's the next one I'm going to in November.

Yes, there are costs like ticket, travel, etc. But if someone's there, I know with high certainty that they work in SaaS or tech. They care about growth. They're facing similar challenges. They care about AI.

That has a massive downstream impact.

You share similar struggles.
You speak the same vocabulary.
The rapport building process becomes natural.

The conversations are specific enough that you can apply what you discuss on Monday morning. The odds of meeting someone who becomes a long-standing relationship in your network are super high.

What does all of that do? 

You potentially meet a co-founder. Get your next new clients. Add six-figure deals in your pipeline. Learn a workflow or strategy that can 5x your output.

That's quite LITERALLY "asymmetric ROI", isn’t it?

The current state of SaaS feels just like the mobile market of 2007-2013.

iPhone launched in 2007. 
By 2013, the mobile market was unrecognizable. 
Blackberry went from dominant to irrelevant.

The same thing seems to be happening in SaaS right now.

Unless you want to become the "Blackberry" of your category, there’s 5 market forces driven by AI that I think you should be monitoring as a SaaS founder.

📌 Force /1 - Agentic AI
⤷ Oh, this is the biggest one. Traditional SaaS was built for humans to use software to get work done. Agentic AI does the work itself. That directly challenges the entire crux of the SaaS model. Manual execution is shifting to automated execution as the new default.

📌 Force /2 - AI-native vs AI-adaptive
⤷ AI-native SaaS companies are leaner, cheaper, and offer superior features. Traditional SaaS companies have years of brand trust and distribution. The fastest growing SaaS companies will combine the best of both worlds to grow exponentially faster.

📌 Force /3 - "Doing more with less"
⤷ Growth-at-all-costs seems to be fading. Leadership and investors are asking questions like “Do you really need 5 marketing channels? Do you really need that many SDRs? Why do you need all these resources? Why can't you do more with less? Can we use AI speed this up?”

📌 Force /4 - Distribution over features
⤷ Traditional GTM channels are becoming harder and more expensive. If you build an owned or social audience, you'll escape the feast-or-famine cycle of demand generation.

📌 Force /5 - AI becoming a commodity
⤷ Everyone has cheap access to the same AI tools. AI-coded competitors will be easier to launch. But just like AI-generated content today, much of it will become noise. AI will give you version 1, which you can take and focus on solving bigger, more painful problems with delightful human-centered UX.
