In 1951, Ogilvy had a problem. 

His client, Hathaway, was a small, unknown shirtmaker with almost no ad budget 
- competing against giants like Arrow and Van Heusen.

So he took a risk.

Ogilvy hired a model, gave him an elegant suit, 

...and - at the last minute - borrowed a black eye patch from a costume store.
He didn’t explain why. He just said, “Trust me.”

The result?

“The man in the Hathaway shirt” - an aristocratic, mysterious figure with a story in his eye.

The ad didn’t even describe the shirt much. It invited curiosity.
People rushed to buy Hathaway shirts just to feel a part of that mystique.

People bought the story, not the fabric.

That single ad transformed a small shirt company into a national brand - 
and became a textbook example of “story in one image.”

Because sometimes, one bold detail is all it takes to make a brand unforgettable.

So... sell the story, not the product.
